Stylish return: Erdmann among decorating veterans at American Red Cross Designers Show House - February 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

As she embarks on her third decade in business, interior designer Lisa E. Erdmann follows an every-other-year schedule to decide when she will decorate a room in the American Red Cross Designers Show House, an annual fundraiser that benefits the charitys Palm Beach Treasure Coast chapter. On alternate years, she focuses on a different organization, from creating a table setting for a benefit at the Norton Museum to helping the Center for Family Services renovate its West Palm Beach offices.

But this year, shes returning her time and design talents to the 39th annual Red Cross Show House at a historic lakefront home in Lake Worth, which hosts a preview party Wednesday before opening to the public the next day for a month of tours.

My parents raised me to always know it was our responsibility to give back if we had the means to do so, Erdmann says. So picking a charity is important in my makeup, and working with the Red Cross is a pleasure. Its so well received that it helps expose our design talent, and it benefits them, too.

    Land-development ties

Giving back is not the only way of thinking Erdmann learned from her family.

Her livelihood centers around homes and design, and she comes from a land-development family with a name certainly familiar to Palm Beachers. Her grandfather, E. Llwyd Ecclestone Sr. an early proponent of building luxury homes clustered around golf courses developed the South Florida luxury communities Lost Tree Village and Johns Island. Her father, Palm Beacher E. Llwyd Ecclestone, developed PGA National and Old Port Cove. Her brother, E. Llwyd Ecclestone III, meanwhile, has just finished work on a pair of houses he developed on speculation on the North End.

Erdmann graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont and attended Parsons School of Design while working in the design industry in New York City. Having also studied at Florida Institute of Technology, she founded Lisa Erdmann & Associates in 1994. Its based at her familys development offices in West Palm Beach but has also long maintained a Palm Beach address.

For this years show house, Erdmann is cooking up something special for the living room of the 1925 Mediterranean-style house known locally as the Birthday Cake Castle, although its formal name is La Florentia.

The 7,000 square foot house, recently bought by Scott Levine, was originally built by Sherman Childs. It received its Birthday Cake Castle nickname when former owner Upton Close gave the home to his wife, Margaret Fretter Nye, as a birthday present in 1954. With slender candle-like pillars, plaster swirls that resemble icing and graceful curves, it even has a birthday-cake stained-glass window in the stairwell.

Its grandly scaled rooms, casual spaces, and nooks and crannies of various shapes and sizes will be the basic ingredients for 20 designers, who will adorn them to create their own slices of decorating magic.

Victorian killer jailed for 18 years - February 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A man who murdered a prominent Melbourne interior decorator he'd been in a relationship with for 16 years has been jailed for 18 years with a minimum of 13.

Victorian Supreme Court judge Elizabeth Hollingworth said Michael Anthony O'Neill, 48, had 'snapped' and killed Stuart Rattle in the heat of the moment after Mr Rattle called him a frigid bitch.

O'Neill spent five days pretending nothing had happened, telling friends and co-workers Mr Rattle was feeling unwell, before setting fire to their South Yarra apartment.

Justice Hollingworth said O'Neill had trouble coming to terms with the fact he had killed the man he loved.

'There's plenty of evidence that you are devastated by what you have done,' Justice Hollingworth said.

O'Neill admitted to killing Mr Rattle by bludgeoning him over the head with a pan then strangling him with a dog leash after police found inconsistencies in his original story - that Mr Rattle had died in the fire. Mr Rattle begged O'Neill for his life, saying 'Michael don't do this', as he was strangled, Justice Hollingworth said.

The couple had a tense relationship and Mr Rattle would often complain about O'Neill to their friends, saying he didn't satisfy him sexually, she said.

'He would call you lazy, a parasite, he threatened to send you back to where you came from.'

But she added this in no way justified O'Neill's actions.

Mr Rattle's family said in witness impact statements his death left an enormous hole in their lives.

The Many Problems of Rep. Aaron Schock - February 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

World News Videos | ABC World NewsCopy

Rep. Aaron Schock has had a rough couple of weeks.

It all started when a Washington Post reporter was given an impromptu tour of Schocks D.C. office by the congressmans interior decorator, who told him all about the offices elaborate Downton Abbey-inspired dcor. When the article ran on Feb. 2, Schock and his unusual office began to receive some unwanted attention.

Had the congressman improperly used his campaign funds to furnish his office? Did he pay his interior decorator, a constituent of his, for her service, or had he violated House rules by accepting it as a gift?

Schock initially tried to brush off the controversy.

As Taylor Swift said, haters are gonna hate, he joked to ABC News on Feb. 4, adding that he fully intended to personally pay his decorator once her work is completed.

Unfortunately, for the 33-year-old Illinois Republican, the controversy was just getting started.

On Feb. 4, the same day he spoke with ABC News, the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington asked the Office of Congressional Ethics to investigate whether Schock had violated House rules while setting up his new office.

The next day, his communications director Benjamin Cole, who had initially tried to quash the Washington Post article, resigned after it emerged that he had posted racially insensitive comments on social media in previous years.

Last Friday, Blue Nation Review was the first to report that in 2012, Schock sold his Peoria, Illinois, home to a major campaign donor for several times its assessed property value, which led CREW to file a second complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics.
