Enlightened for life - March 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

YOURE visiting your parents and have been asked to help find something in their cupboard. Off you go to their room, switch on the single fluorescent light and open the cupboard door. Its as though youre peering into an abyss because there isnt enough light to see whats inside the cupboard. You have two choices: You either close the cupboard door immediately or take everything out, find what they need and spend the next few hours putting everything back.

    SENSOR LIGHTS

Now, we have a third option, says Lim Joo Yee, consumer marketing manager at Philips, a global market leader in lighting solutions. With those hard-to-see places, we have Philips Spot On sensor lights. They have motion sensors and are battery operated. With the double-sided tape at the back, you stick them on the inside wall of the cupboard. No necessity for screws and plug points, explains Lim during an event called Philips LED The Way to showcase some of the cutting-edge LED solutions that Philips offers.

With LED technology, Philips is focusing on enhancing peoples lives with the kind of light they use in their living spaces, says Adrine Ong, lighting division general manager. All the products on show came under holistic LED ecosystem and included lamps, indoor lighting and light fittings.

Ong shared some of the benefits of LED lighting. For one, the quality of light from LED bulbs is superior because it provides vivid lights with natural shades of white, which means less glare. Since LED bulbs tend to be smaller, they create an ambient atmosphere. With a typical lifetime of between 15,000 and 20,000 hours, it will be between 15 and 20 years before your LED bulbs need to be replaced.

Since our electricity tariff is going up, LED bulbs will reduce maintenance costs, keep electricity bills from skyrocketing and use up to 85 per cent less energy without compromising on lighting performance. More important for environmentalists is the fact that LED bulbs dont contain lead or mercury, which are harmful, says Ong.

While all this may sound technical, Ong adds that research shows more consumers are no longer simply saying they need more lights. In fact, what theyre saying is, I need more energy efficient lights.

    INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS

Lim cites the kitchen as an example. Previously, kitchens had one light. Now, as kitchens become smaller, so are work spaces like countertops. Often, when people are doing something like washing or cutting, there is a shadow and they cant see clearly what theyre doing, she says. For this, we have something called Philips myLiving Linear lights. They are motion sensor lights so you just pass your hand underneath the light and it will come on. Also, these lights produce little or no forward-facing heat.

She adds: Today, in many houses, there are three generations living together. Each generation has different lighting requirements. Childrens eyes are more sensitive and they dont need such bright lights. As people age, however, their needs change so grandparents may need bright lights.

Philips unveils sensor-ready system for connected office lighting - March 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    14 hours ago Mar. 26, 2014 - 4:00 PM PDT

Weve already seen Philipss clever indoor lighting platform that acts as a fine-grained indoor location-tracking system for shops, but now the Dutch conglomerate is preparing to unveil something for the office.

Next week at the Light + Building show in Frankfurt, Germany, Philips will take the wraps off its connected office lighting system. The LED light fixtures are all hooked up to the buildings IT network through their wiring its Power-over-Ethernet (PoE), which provides just enough juice for low-power LEDs and can also include sensors for monitoring humidity and temperature, as well as for judging when a room is occupied or not.

As with the in-store system, the lights can also act as a positioning grid to help people navigate the office layout. By communicating with a smartphone app using light, the fixtures could tell where the user is and help recommend the nearest vacant meeting room, for example. Users could also easily adjust the lighting and temperature of the room theyre in, via the app.

The real pitch here is for building owners and facility managers. By measuring occupancy levels and energy usage, and displaying the results through Philipss software, the system would make it easier to figure out when to heat certain areas, how often specific rooms need cleaning, and of course what should be lit at certain times of day.

Its gathering a large database of information for various fixtures for facility managers, to make their life easier, Philips spokesman Menno Kleingeld told me.

Philips isnt the first company to unveil such a system. Notably, Redwood Systems, bought last year by CommScope, also supplies a package that combines LEDs with Ethernet-style cables for environmental monitoring and centralized building control.

However, Redwoods system does not hew to the PoE specification. Kleingeld was adamant that Philipss system sticks to open standards, cutting down on cost and avoiding potential lock-in. That said, certain features will only work with Philipss software. Part of where we believe we can play an extended role is by offering user apps and facility management tools, he said.

Philips already has a showcase customer for its system in consultancy giant Deloitte, whose new Amsterdam office (currently under construction) incorporates it. We see our office raising the bar in data analytics with completely new insights in the use of office space, leading the way for offices to reduce the CO2 footprint of buildings and create a more sustainable world, Deloitte Netherlands CIO Erik Ubels said in a statement.

Regarding security, Kleingeld told me that all the data generated by the lighting system would by default stay in the customers own IT network. Being wired rather than wireless, its also harder to snoop on.

Eaton's LED Solutions Improve Lighting Performance and Efficiency at Detroit Metropolitan … - March 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. Power management company Eaton today announced that its Cooper Lighting divisions McGraw-Edison Valet and Ventus light-emitting diode (LED) luminaires are replacing 6,050 existing parking garage fixtures at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) to improve efficiencies and optical lighting performance. The conversion will result in a 66 percent reduction in power consumption with an anticipated overall energy and maintenance savings of approximately $1.2 million annually.

This project is improving the lighting performance in our parking facilities, reducing energy consumption, saving on maintenance costs and shrinking our carbon footprint, said Tom Naughton, chief executive officer, Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA). Our team invested a significant amount of time field testing 12 different lighting fixtures and visiting local municipalities that completed parking garage lighting upgrades to take into account their lessons learned and implement best practices for a results-driven end product.

Consuming only 60 watts, the McGraw-Edison Valet LED fixtures are replacing 1,200 existing 210-watt, metal halide fixtures in the Blue Deck parking garage and 4,800 fixtures in McNamara Terminal Parking Structure. The Ventus LED pole-mounted fixtures are being installed on the upper open decks. The fixtures are estimated to reduce annual energy consumption by more than 7,345,000 kilowatt hours, resulting in 66 percent energy savings and providing improved uniform illumination.

Replacing inefficient parking garage lighting with LED fixtures is one of the most practical, energy-efficient upgrades a city or business can make to save energy, reduce costs and lower carbon dioxide emissions, said Mark Eubanks, president, Eatons Cooper Lighting division. This project is a great example of how to increase overall efficiencies and performance to provide a safe and well-lit environment, all while helping save the airport energy and maintenance costs.

In addition, the LED products incorporate the Lighting divisions LumaWatt Outdoor Wireless Control and Monitoring System, which manages the lighting levels according to pedestrian and traffic safety needs. Since the lighting runs 24 hours a day, the products are able to reduce light levels during low usage hours, increase the lighting on demand with occupancy sensors and harvest daylight, reducing power to the fixtures when needed to gain additional energy savings.

The Lighting divisions LED luminaires also provide maintenance savings, including labor and materials. On average, the existing light source needed to be replaced every 13 months, whereas the McGraw-Edison LED fixtures are designed to last more than 60,000 hours, or maintain minimal lighting levels for at least 10 years.

The energy saved in this project is equivalent to powering 880 U.S. households for one year, and the reduction of 7,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year is equal to taking 1,350 passenger vehicles off the road.

This project is one of many initiatives currently underway as part of the Airport Authority's on-going commitment to promote sustainability practices, while conducting day-to-day operations, said Ali Dib, director of Infrastructure and Engineering, WCAA.

Eatons Cooper Lighting division delivers a range of innovative and reliable indoor and outdoor lighting solutions, as well as controls products specifically designed to maximize performance, energy efficiency and cost savings. The Lighting business serves customers in the commercial, industrial, retail, institutional, residential, utility and other markets.

Eatons Electrical Sector is a global leader with expertise in power distribution and circuit protection; backup power protection; control and automation; lighting and security; structural solutions and wiring devices; solutions for harsh and hazardous environments; and engineering services. Eaton is positioned through its global solutions to answer todays most critical electrical power management challenges.
