Hands-on with the Sparkbeats light-up iPhone case - May 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Sparkbeats effect is most dramatic when the lights are low, but it's still quite visible under ordinary indoor lighting. BiteMyApple.co

There are plenty of iPhone cases that do more than just protect your phone. Some double as wallets, some zap would-be attackers with 650,000 volts, and so on.

How about one that livens up the way you receive notifications? That's the Sparkbeats in a nutshell: it's an iPhone 5/5S case that lights up and flashes whenever there's an incoming call or text. And because it leverages a little-documented feature in iOS, it requires no external power to do so.

Sparkbeats began as a Kickstarter project in Australia, but is now available for sale via BiteMyApple.co, which provided my review sample.

Available in black or white, the case sports two clear, raised channels that run from the camera LED all around the back and sides. To take advantage of this, you need to delve into your iPhone's settings (General > Accessibility) and enable LED Flash for Alerts.

With that done, the LED will flash whenever a call or text message comes in. And with your iPhone inside the Sparkbeats, that entire channel will flash as well. The effect is pretty cool, and it certainly has practical value: even if your phone is set to mute, you can see the flashing, making it less likely that you'll miss an important call or message.

    Timed Company Limited

There's also a "pass-through" switch that allows you to use the LED for its intended purpose (i.e. flash photography). And if you want to have a little more fun with the case, the free Sparkbeats app lets you enable Flash Light mode (complete with an SOS option), a motion-sensitive flash, and Follow the Beats, which makes the LED strobe in response to sound picked up by the microphone.

Ironically, though, it doesn't seem to work with music you play on your iPhone proper.

All told, the Sparkbeats is a pretty cool gimmick. However, although the raised rear channels offer some added anti-slip gription, the case itself has zero lip to protect your screen in the event of a face-down drop. And it's necessarily on the thick side to accommodate the side channels.

Toshiba expands to food production with indoor vegetable factory - May 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Toshiba's factory will be isolated from the outside air and have tightly controlled air and lighting systems, creating a sterile environment for the plants to grow

Looking to take a bite out of the Japanese food market, electronics giant Toshiba has announced plans to construct a vegetable production factory in the city of Yokosuka. The factory will use tightly controlled air and lighting systems to optimize conditions for indoor plant growth, the company expecting the resulting assortment of greens to yield JPY300 million (around US$3,000,000) in annual sales.

Construction of the plant is already underway, with Toshiba hoping to begin shipping products such as lettuce, baby leaf green, spinach and other vegetables as soon as July 2014. It is fitting the factory with fluorescent lighting along with an air conditioning system to keep constant temperature and moisture levels.

Toshiba's factory will be isolated from the outside air, creating a close to sterile environment within its walls. This means there is no need for pesticides and should result in a longer shelf life, with the company planning to sell on the produce to supermarkets and restaurants as vegetables rich in polyphenols and vitamin C.

Factories of this type are common throughout Japan, a country which has relied heavily on agricultural imports to meet its food requirements. By artificially controlling the environment in these factories, it is possible to produce large quantities of vegetables with a more efficient use of land, power and nutrients. Like other approaches to farming being developed for high-density areas, these factories have the potential to help cater for the food production needs of growing urban populations.

GE Lighting Solutions and Jasco Products Enter Into Patent License Agreement for Remote Phosphor Applications - May 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

East Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) May 19, 2014

GE Lighting Solutions, LLC, a business unit of GE Lighting, today announced that it has granted Jasco Products Company, LLC, a license to a pioneering portfolio of patents relating to remote phosphor applications in LED lighting.

GE Lightings remote phosphor patents enable LED device manufacturers to achieve higher system efficiency and color stability. The agreement grants Jasco rights under U.S. Patent Nos. 7,224,000; 7,479,662; 7,800,121; 8,362,695; and 8,436,380 and corresponding foreign counterparts. Other related patent applications remain pending. Remote phosphor technology is gaining acceptance in many lighting segments including indoor lighting, outdoor lighting, architectural lighting, and stage and studio.

By spacing the phosphor element away from the LED in a white light system, an improvement in light extraction efficiency is achieved, said Jerry Duffy, General Manager Global Product Management for GE Lighting. Through the remote phosphor technology, added flexibility in system design can also be achieved in some applications by interchangeable phosphor elements allowing a selection of color temperatures.

This technology takes LED lighting to the next level. Consumers want the color stability and light dispersion they enjoy with incandescent lighting combined with the energy savings and long life LED technology provides, stated Cameron Trice, President and CEO of Jasco Products Company.

Enbrighten(TM) branded products using remote phosphor technology will provide all these benefits and more in a variety of indoor and outdoor applications.

Jasco will begin distribution of the Enbrighten branded lighting products in late summer.

Our consumer research shows us the demand for energy-efficient lighting solutions that outperform traditional white LED systems but incorporate the efficiency and long-life benefits is growing, said Trice. Jasco is excited to continue working with GE to provide innovative lighting solutions that exceed consumer expectations.

GE Lighting is offering non-exclusive licenses to the remote phosphor patents to interested parties.

About GE Lighting GE Lighting invents with the vigor of its founder Thomas Edison to develop energy-efficient solutions that change the way people light their world in commercial, industrial, municipal and residential settings. The business employs about 13,000 people in more than 100 countries, and sells products under the reveal(R) and Energy Smart(R) consumer brands, and Evolve(TM), GTx(TM), Immersion(TM), Infusion(TM), Lumination(TM), Albeo(TM) and Tetra(R) commercial brands, all trademarks of GE. Light Sentry oversees your home lighting needs - May 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Sonne Industries

Light Sentry is a newly-launched Kickstarter campaign by Sonne Industries. The main components include a central hub, a natural light sensor, and a gizmo (called a portable power gate) that acts as an intermediary between your connected light fixture and the hub. This hardware is designed to help you automate and optimize your home lighting schedules.

Existing devices that turn your lights on or off on a set schedule don't necessarily account for power outages or changes in sunset/sunrise time. Light Sentry does. It relies on real-time lighting conditions and time to auto-adjust your lights based on rules you set. After that initial setup, you're supposedly done -- there's no need to worry about making adjustments based on seasonal changes like Daylight Savings Time, etc. The whole concept kind of reminds me of transitions lenses (You know, those glasses that change from clear indoors to sunglasses in full light?) or auto-headlights.

Sonne Industries claims that its Light Sentry setup is DIY. Simply plug the Light Sentry hub into an outlet, stick the natural light sensor anywhere (inside or outside) that has direct access to outdoor light, and the sensor is supposed to transmit light readings back to the hub. Then, connect your portable power gates to any lights you want to program.

How Light Sentry works Sonne Industries

The portable power gates can be set to dim incandescent, LED, or CFL bulbs at 25, 50, 75, or 100 percent brightness. They are designed to work with lamps and other gadgets up to 600W, and have an override option in case you want to temporarily stray from your established lighting schedule. You can use the Web-based interface to create custom commands for every portable power gate.

You can set commands (on, dim, or off) based on light, dark, time, or a combination of the three. In addition to the convenience of a fully automated lighting system that self-adjusts based on real-time cues, Light Sentry could also help with money and energy savings. And while it's currently only available for indoor use, outdoor portable power gates are in the works, contingent on the success of the Kickstarter campaign. The Light Sentry funding period started on May 14 with a $200,000 goal. The last time I checked, it had received $13,788 in funding, but there's still 28 days to go -- in case you want to back this project.
