WHEN we attend a theater performance today, usually in the evening, the show is commonly set in an indoor stage illuminated by artificial light.
When we attend an outdoor musical concert together with hundreds of audience, even if we are meters away from the stage, we still enjoy the amplified sound and its variants.
Stage lighting makes the other elements of theatrical production visible. But it does much more, because it plays a major role in creating mood and atmosphere, in emphasizing and subordinating visual elements, and in blending the entire stage picture.
Similarly, sound design is recognized nowadays as the fourth design discipline, along with scenery, lighting and costume. This recognition owes to the development of digitized sound that, in conjunction with computers, permits designers to create and manipulate sound waves, not merely record or amplify them.
In the provinces, tight budget and expensive lights and sounds equipment has spurred the invention of alternative ways to illuminate and amplify a stage performance.
But with the prices for equipment becoming less expensive, with some entrepreneurs renting out performance equipment like lights and sound, the young breed of performing artists and technicians must now learn how to handle these tools of technology.
On the other hand, in mounting a theater production or managing an event, two teams interplay: the artistic and the production.
The artistic team creates while the other team supports this creating. This is where Stage and Production Management comes in. The first is directly involved in rehearsals, and the second provides the resources for the rehearsals.
In response to this need, the Outreach and Exchange Division of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) will conduct Capability Building Workshops in Bacolod City on July 25 to 27.
The project is in partnership with the Negros Museum and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. There are three simultaneous workshops that will be offered, namely Lighting Design, Sound Design and the Production Management.

NEW YORK CITY DecaWave aims to boost accuracy for indoor location tracking with its a module based on its DWM1000 chip that locates objects within 10 cm using time-of-flight techniques.
"There is a lot going on around indoor location technology for asset tracking, people tracking," DecaWave marketing manager Mickael Viot told us. Tracking via Bluetooth or WiFi "doesn't work in the real world because it only gives reliable measurements between three and five meters."
The 23 mm x 13 mm x 2.9 mm module is meant for applications in industrial, automotive, and logistics markets, using both time-of-flight measurements and signals to track objects in crowded rooms. The module supports six frequency bands from 3.5 GHz to 6.5 GHz, and it can generate "a perfect pulse that's really sharp with very, very high accuracy."

Bluetooth and WiFi systems suffer can track only items within the sight of access points, Viot said. DecaWave's system maximizes the range between its RF nodes. As a result, businesses will require fewer receivers Viot said an open 32,000-square-foot warehouse would need 15-20 receivers; an older office with many objects and thick walls would need one for every 250 square feet.
DecaWave has partnered with LG Innotek to use the module in its smart lighting systems and for asset tracking within buildings. South Korea Telecom is using the technology to sell tracking services in public places such as museums. The module can send data packets at up to 6.8 Mbit/s.
In addition to solving indoor tracking issues, DecaWave wants to use its module to further security in the Internet of Things. Viot envisions a 3 x 3 mm footprint for DecaWave chips in IoT devices, using the module's ability to track objects at a distance. Citing connections to the automotive industry, Viot said the company will work with auto manufacturers to prevent key fob theft and unwanted car unlocking.

Visibility is key when it comes to playing indoor sports like soccer, lacrosse and tennis; and three intrepid Massachusetts indoor sports entrepreneurs at the Bass River Tennis Club, Fore Kicks, and Home Grown Lacrosse came to the same conclusion. Improved lighting on the playing surface, delivered by ThinkLite, a Massachusetts-based lighting efficiency leader, has helped differentiate their facilities and delight their members and players.

We have ten courts. Five were lit by traditional T8 fluorescent lamps and the other five by T5 fluorescent lamps. Because the T8 lighting was so dim, members actually considered us a five-court club!
