PHOENIX -- Super Bowl XLIX is more than the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks playing for the Vince Lombardi Trophy under the bright lights in Glendale.
It also happens to be about the lights as well.
University of Phoenix Stadium will illuminate the Feb. 1 Super Bowl like no other previous NFL championship game before. The Patriots and Seahawks will be the first teams to compete for the title under an LED lighting system, which the stadium installed prior to the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers game in September.
The use of LED lights for the game comes at a time when attention to detail has been critical in an NFL game. Look back at this postseason, where two games involving the Dallas Cowboys came down to calls made by the referees.
The company that brought the new lights to Glendale, Ephesus Lighting, designed and installed these lights to provide television audiences and replay officials more vivid detail.
Scott Norton, director of marketing and public relations at University of Phoenix Stadium, said media companies like ESPN and Fox have praised the stadium's upgrades.
"The lighting is just amazing for slow-motion [replay] and HDTV," Norton said.
The installation of the LED lights cut down the number of lighting fixtures by more than half, saving about 929,000 watts needed to power the fixtures, according to a case study Ephesus Lighting conducted.
Doug Drotman, the spokesman for Ephesus Lighting, said that number of watts is equal to about 15,000, 60-watt light bulbs. In layman's terms, that equates to about the same amount of energy needed to power about 750 homes each using 20 of those bulbs.
In all, stadium officials expect the lights to save about 65 percent in electrical costs.

Precision-Paragon [P2] Fixture Is First to Safely Function in Photo-Sensitive Food Processing & Pharmaceutical Facilities
Yorba Linda, California (PRWEB) - The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Progress Committee has recognized the innovative QHC LED fixture by Precision-Paragon [P2] as a unique and significant advancement to the art and science of lighting.
The award recognizes the ultra-efficient LED fixture as being the first LED high-bay luminaire with TIR-based short wavelength light suppression optics.
Some foods like milk, beer, chocolate and butter are susceptible to photooxidation, a process where exposure to certain wavelengths of light creates off-flavors and can significantly reduce the shelf life of affected foods. The same photooxidation process can also reduce the shelf life of many pharmaceuticals.
Photooxidation primarily occurs at specific wavelengths of light, below 500nm. In the past, food processing plants, dairies and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities were restricted to using less efficient light sources that emitted longer wavelengths in order to prevent photooxidation. These facilities couldnt take advantage of ultra-efficient LED lighting technology without damaging the products they produced.
With the patent-pending QHC, [P2] has developed the first LED high-bay that does not emit light waves below 500nm. This is accomplished by adding a special total internal reflection (TIR) optic to the fixture that absorbs wavelengths of light below 500nm, and retransmits them at longer wavelengths.
As a result, facilities creating products susceptible to photooxidation can benefit from ultra-efficient LED lighting technology for the first time. The QHC is capable of replacing a 465-watt high-pressure sodium fixture with just 139 watts of LED lighting, delivering a 70 percent energy reduction.
Until now, many food processing and pharmaceutical plants had to make do with decades-old lighting technology, said Joe Martin, [P2]s vice president and general manager. Im proud that our engineering team was the first to develop a real solution.
The QHCs award was announced at the IES Annual Conference in November and is profiled in the January issue of LD+A magazine. The TIR version of the QHC will be commercially available from [P2] in February of 2015, in a 135 watt 60 LED chip configuration.
About Precision-Paragon [P2]: For over 20 years, [P2] has made high-quality, indoor-and-outdoor light fixtures for a wide range of applications in retail, commercial and industrial spaces. [P2]s energy-efficient lighting drastically cuts energy consumption, creating big cost savings and significant environmental benefits.

"I thought that it would be the best thing for us to build something this nice for the people of bowling green and surrounding counties, that's family oriented. That's what we wanted to do and that's what we did do," said Walker.
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- Bowling Green is home to the only state of the art, indoor shooting range in the Commonwealth and employees say it's the best indoor range in the country. Walker Arms indoor range has been open for nearly two months, but what makes it state of the art?
Range Manager, Trent Young, says the most important feature is that it does not recirculate air as most indoor ranges do, providing a more mediocre smell and making it healthier for shooters.
"Air comes in and it gets heated or cooled. It goes down range then it gets pulled out and filtered. It is HEPA filtered before it's released back into the atmosphere," said Young.
The range also has LED lighting, interactive targets, and an on sight NRA certified range safety officer at all times. It also has 12 lanes with four by eight foot booths, separated by four inches of concrete on each side.
Many online residents had issues with an indoor range being built in what they considered a residential area. The Bowling Green Planning and Zoning Commission says the building was zoned to be used for indoor entertainment, including shooting ranges. That building was zoned for light industrial, meaning the only stipulation was the building had to be sound proof.
"We had qualified engineers to engineer this range to make sure that the sound proofing was the way it should be by code. Actually, we went even further than that. We've done a lot more insulation and more sealing and things of that nature to make sure it happened," said Claudis Walker, CEO and President of Walker Arms.
Walker said he put a lot of time and money into this project.
"I thought that it would be the best thing for us to build something this nice for the people of Bowling Green and surrounding counties, something that is family oriented. That's what we wanted to do and that's what we did do," said Walker.

The Athletic Business Conference (ABC) and Trade Show annually attracts nearly 3000 attendees in the sports, fitness, and recreation from nearly every state as well as attendees from over twenty countries. This years event in Orlando was the first ABC where ThinkLite, the global lighting efficiency company, exhibited, to great success.
Our objective said Dinesh Wadhwani, ThinkLite CEO, was to provide decision makers an exceptional alternative to the high price of lighting sports facilities, recreation centers and healthclubs. Thats why we came with a booth that many attendees said was the brightest trade show booth they had ever seen!
On display was ThinkLites proprietary range of retrofit LED and induction lights that can cut the electricity cost of any facility by 50%. When a facility makes the decision to pursue energy efficient lighting, they are often faced with the high cost of replacing every fixture to accommodate LED or induction lighting. We at ThinkLite have developed breakthrough technology that allows us to retrofit traditional light fixtures such as T5 or T8 flourescent fixtures with ThinkLite LED solutions.
ThinkLite offers solutions for every part of a facility from gymnasium, to swimming pool, to hockey rinks, indoor sports, fitness centers and more. Danny Wadhwani, ThinkLte COO-CFO said, Many of the facilities are open and lit 18 hours or more per day. Immediately, with ThinkLite, these facilities will consume 50% less electricity which has a significant bottom line impact.
The ThinkLite booth was a very busy place as attendees were not only attracted to the bright glow of energy efficient lighting, but compelled by the value proposition. Danny Wadhwani continued, Not only do operators immediately save 50% or more on their lighting costs, the cost to replace fixtures is eliminated. Whats more, many utilities provide rebates for energy efficiency projects. Depending upon the size of the rebates, the return on investment can be twenty-four months or less.
We made many great connections at the Athletic Business Conference and the decision makers we are speaking to are excited about the prospect of retrofitting to ThinkLite and enjoying immediate savings while strengthening their positions as green, sustainable businesses. Were very pleased with this outcome from the Athletic Business Conference. said Dinesh.

The renovation project for the indoor stadium, which had been in a limbo for almost a decade, was first mooted around the time of a visit by then Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, M.S. Gill, in 2010.
The subsequent delay in the works had been owing to shortage of funds, said an official from the Public Works Department, which had undertaken the work. The renovation project consists of three main components lighting as per international standards, providing air conditioning and civil components, he said.
Of this, the lighting component has been completed, while the piping work for the air conditioning is on. The civil component includes changing of tiles and flooring in the toilet blocks.
With the work in two toilet blocks having been completed, work on fixtures in the remaining two blocks at the rear of the stadium is under way. There was some small damage during cyclone Thane in 2011. The renovation project has cost around Rs 5.5 crore and all pending work is expected to be completed by May .
P. Karunakaran, secretary, Puducherry Table Tennis Association, has expressed satisfaction over the renovation, saying that the government had managed to get the logistics readied in time for the tournament.
We were officially given the stadium only on the morning of the commencement of the event, he said.
