Taiwan expanding into indoor LED-lit, pesticide-free farms - April 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

In this photo taken on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, farmer Chang Chen-kai, prunes common salad lettuce growing under banks of LED lights at the ARWIN plant factory in Miaoli, northern Taiwan. Entrepreneurs in Taiwan are combining the islands leading edge in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with its traditional agricultural know-how to create artificial environments to grow vegetables. These indoor grow-rooms have nutrient-filled water instead of soil and variable LED lighting to imitate the cycle of night and day. They are gaining popularity for raising everything from common lettuce to the exotic South African ice plant, which draws US $400 per kilogram. These LED-lit hydroponic environments yield more crops per area than soil but without the need for traditional toxic pesticides.

    Wally Santana, Associated Press

TAIPEI, Taiwan Chang Chen-kai is part of Taiwan's new generation of high-tech farmers that is harnessing the island's technological edge in light-emitting diodes to grow vegetables indoors under bright LED lights.

Chang works in an air-conditioned "grow-room" at a plant factory operated by ARWIN, a biotechnology company, where plants grow in nutrient-filled water instead of soil and the temperature and humidity are controlled. LED lights imitate the cycle of night and day.

These high-tech indoor farms yield more crops per area than soil, and don't need traditional toxic pesticides. Plants grown under LED lights grow twice as fast because the intensity of lights and nutrients provided in the water, growers say.

"To grow vegetables in the water (under lights), you need less land," Chang said, and "you don't need pesticides."

Such plant factories are gaining popularity for raising everything from common lettuce to the exotic ice plant, a thick leafy vegetable from South Africa that looks like it has water bubbles on its leaves and can fetch $400 per kilogram.

In recent years, Taiwanese manufacturers have been able to produce cheaper LED lights that consume less electricity and give off light that mimics the intensity and spectrum of sunlight.

TingMao Agricultural Biotechnology was an early pioneer, starting its plant factory in 2007, and today is the leading producer of LED-grown vegetables in Taiwan. It has also set up its own restaurant using vegetables from its factory to allow consumers to taste the vegetables themselves.

But Lily Chang, a food writer and professor at Innovative Institute of Technology, isn't convinced that LED-grown vegetables are as nutritious as those grown in soil.

VOLT Lighting Introduces Complete Line of LED High Bay Lights with Smart Controls to Satisfy Energy-Saving Needs for … - April 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tampa, Florida (PRWEB) March 31, 2015

VOLT Lighting, leading factory-direct lighting supplier, announced today the introduction of a new line of LED high bay lights. The lights are designed to present significant energy cost savings (and other benefits) to facilities currently using High Pressure Sodium (HPS) or Metal Halide (MH) high bays.

    Savings result from two factors:

    1. Lighting efficiency advantages of LED light sources compared to the HPS and MH high bays they replace.

    2. Smart controls that use motion-activated technology to ensure the lights are only On when needed. Older high bays with HPS or MH sources can not use motion activation because they require up to 30 minutes to come to full brightness. VOLT's LED High Bays are instant-on so can be activated as fast as needed in a busy warehouse.

The combination of these two factors can reduce a facilitys energy consumption enough to qualify for government rebates and lower tier pricing from energy suppliers.

Heather Weston, VOLT Product Manager, describes the various factors that guided VOLTs high bay product development, We had a number of performance targets with the high bay development project. First, the high bays needed to have sturdy construction and be easy to install. Next, they needed to have highly efficient long-life LEDs with accurate color specifications. And, finally, they needed to have advanced motion-activated controls.

The adoption of LED technology for high bay fixtures promises to have a tremendous impact on energy consumption across all commercial sectors. High bays are commonly found in warehouses, factories, sports and events venues, big-box retail stores, airports, and many other facility types. With typical energy savings of 60% to 80%, the potential overall savings make a significant contribution to government-sponsored energy saving programs.

Weston provides more details on VOLTs high bay fixtures, Our development goals are not just about saving energy, we also care about lightings effect on people. Existing HPS and MH high bays are notorious for their poor color quality. Workers complain about visual fatigue associated with performing tasks under High Bays. VOLT specifically addresses this problem by providing high bays with an ideal warm white color temperature and relatively high color rendering index. That means workers feel more comfortable and less fatigued when their facility is lit by VOLT LED High Bays.

Perhaps the most impressive feature of the VOLT High Bays is their price to the end-user. As a factory-direct manufacturer, VOLT Lighting bypasses traditional distribution channels. This allows them to sell high quality at low prices. In addition, their nationwide company-owned distribution facilities deliver on promises of same-day order fulfillment and delivery within 4 days. As a Google trusted store, consumers rate the online store and give it an average of 4.9 stars (out of a possible 5.0).

Vertical Farming Platform includes LED lighting. - April 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

HOUSTON, -- Indoor Harvest, Corp. (OTC Pink: INQD), through its brand name Indoor Harvest(TM), is a design build contractor, developer, marketer and direct-seller of commercial grade aeroponic and hydroponic fixtures and supporting systems for use in urban Controlled Environment Agriculture and Building Integrated Agriculture. The Company is pleased to announce that it will be introducing its recently developed low cost vertical farming platform at Indoor Ag-Con next week in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Indoor Harvest's CEO and founder Chad Sykes commented, "We believe that there is a growing demand for affordable vertical farming systems, but most current offerings are still out of the price range of most entrants. We looked at the current state of the industry and developed what we believe is the most cost effective platform based on current technology available."

The Company's new vertical farming platform is designed to reduce costs by being engineered to utilize the standardized "Strut" channel framing system. Strut channel is the industry standard when it comes to the construction of framing systems to support mechanical systems around the world. As an addition to our platform, we have developed a frame that will support either an aeroponic system or a hydroponic system and incorporates the Illumitex brand Eclipse Series LED horticulture lighting system right out of the box. The Company has also engineered the related brackets and hardware to support the lighting system drivers and associated plumbing.

Mr. Sykes added, "By making our vertical farming platform compatible with Strut framing systems and a proven popular LED lighting system, we have created a platform that can be fully customized, is affordable to even the smallest operator and can reduce the cost associated with installation. With prices expected to come in around $90 a square foot for a complete shallow raft system, including LED's, I believe we've developed the lowest cost system on the market while maintaining commercial grade engineering. We designed this platform specifically for the smaller commercial vertical farming operator."

Vertical farming is a new industry that has only just recently begun to gain traction. Over the last three years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of small scale vertical farms being built to grow gourmet leafy greens, herbs and micro-greens for niche produce markets. It is our intention to provide affordable, simple to install systems to these small growers entering this new industry.

To date, vertical farming has mostly been a do-it-yourself business. Vertical farming industry entrants have had to design their own systems due to a lack of affordable platforms. This more often than not has resulted in higher R&D expenditures as early pioneers have had to design and re-design their systems as they go. The trend has been to adapt existing industrial shelving systems such as tear drop and cantilever style systems for use in vertical farming. This approach is costly because modifications must be made to these systems to adapt them for use in vertical farming. These modifications dramatically increase installation labor. Our system has been pre-engineered specifically for vertical farming and designed to reduce labor costs associated with installation.

We will begin offering our new vertical farming platform in the Second Quarter of 2015. We will be displaying our vertical farming platform at the upcoming Indoor Ag-Con March 31 through April 1, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada. For more information on Indoor Ag-Con please visit http://www.indoor.ag.

We currently plan on filing on March 31, 2015 our Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2014.

Consistent with the SEC's April 2013 guidance on using social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter to make corporate disclosures and announce key information in compliance with Regulation FD, Indoor Harvest is alerting investors and other members of the general public that Indoor Harvest will provide weekly updates on operations and progress through its social media on Facebook and Twitter.
