What are the best low maintenance houseplants? – Los Angeles Times - March 5, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Plants make people happy. They inject our homes with life, personality and vitality.

Until we kill them. (Dont feel too guilty about that; you can always compost them.)

But it doesnt have to be that way. Pothos, Aglaonema and Dracaena are practically kill-proof.

Sanseviera can go weeks without water. Fast-growing hoya, often called wax plants, can live forever.

    Lee esta historia en espaol.

If you travel, or are away from home a lot, consider types of houseplants that dont need a lot of light and are forgiving if you forget to water them every now and then, said Rhiannon Cramm, of Mickey Hargitay Plants.

With that in mind, here are some suggestions from Southern California plant experts Cramm, Danae Horst of Folia Collective, Christine Kelso of Instagrams Work Hard Plant Hard and Justina Blakeney of the Jungalow.

    Dwarf sansevieria in vintage pots.

(Christina House / Los Angeles Times)

    1. Sansevieria: Popular types of sansevieria such as the snake plant, or mother-in-laws-tongue, are easy to grow, require little water and thrive in warm interiors. Although often considered an office plant, there are many interesting varieties to choose from in various shapes, sizes and colors, including the horn-like cylindrica and patens.

The hoya plant has waxy, heart-shaped foliage.

    (Ann Summa)

    2. Hoya: Many Hoya species do best in bright, filtered light but can be allowed to dry out between waterings because its leaves store water.

    Peperomia caperata, emerald ripple

    (Lisa Boone )

    3. Peperomia caperata, emerald ripple: Peperomia caperata thrive in low, medium, or bright indirect light and retain water in its heart-shaped, corrugated leaves. Resistant to disease and pests, the ripple peperomia is a compact, trouble-free plant that occasionally produces thin, cream colored flower stalks.

Epipremnum aureum, or pothos, devils ivy

    4. Epipremnum aureum, or pothos, devils ivy: This climber is known for its long, trailing stems that can grow to 8 feet or more. That is why you will often see it trailing from the rafters in restaurants. You can kill this plant and revive it with water. I speak from experience.

Satin pothos, or silver vine, is the easiest of its genus to grow.

(DEA / C. DANI / De Agostini / Getty Images)

    5. Scindapsus pictus, or satin pothos: This popular climber is one of the easiest Scindapsus to grow. Keep it warm, in bright, indirect light, take care not to over water it, and it will be happy.

    Chinese Evergreen, Silver_Bay

    (Potted)

    6. Aglaonema, or Chinese evergreen: The Chinese evergreen is often recommended for beginners because it is hearty, easy to grow, drought tolerant and can endure just about any indoor lighting situation.

    Spathiphyllum, peace lily.

    (Courtesy of Costa Farms )

    7. Spathiphyllum, or peace lily: Grow in medium light, in normal room temperatures, and water moderately and you will be treated to fragrant flowers in the spring.

    8. Dracaena Lisa cane and marginata: If you are looking for something taller, the Dracaena Lisa cane and marginata hold up well in lower light. A healthy Lisa cane can grow as high as 7 to 8 feet tall with very little sunlight. Dracaena are popular for their striped, glossy leaves.

    ZZ plant, Zamioculcas zamiifolia

    (The Sill )

    9. Zamioculcas zamiifolia, or ZZ plant: If you are intimidated by houseplants, Zamioculcas zamiifolia, commonly known as the ZZ plant, is a tall, sculptural tropical that can survive just about anywhere.

    Jade plant.

    (Lisa Boone/Los Angeles Times)

    10. Crassula ovata, or jade plant: This succulent needs little water, can withstand full sun to part shade, may grow to 4 feet tall and produces tiny pink or white star-shaped flowers.

    Ponytail palm, beaucarnea recurvata

    (Lee Reich/AP)

    11. Beaucarnea recurvata, or ponytail palm: The ponytail palm is easy because it can grow almost anywhere. It is impossible to kill as long as you dont over water it.

    Chlorophytum comosum, spider plant

    (Lee Reigh/AP)

    12. Chlorophytum comosum, or spider plant, curly or straight: Provide this popular houseplant with well-drained soil and bright, indirect light and it will treat you to ornamental leaves that sprout spider-shaped plantlets.

    Heartleaf philodendron, Philodendron hederaceum

    (The Sill )

    13. Philodendron hederaceum: This plant, with its heart-shaped green leaves and trailing vines, is one of the most common houseplants and one of the easiest to grow. The plant can survive in a variety of lighting conditions and can be grown as a climbing or trailing specimen in baskets.

    Haworthia fasciata, center.

    (Ricardo DeAratanha/Los Angeles Times )

    14. Haworthia fasciata: Small and dramatic, this succulent has dark green leaves and white horizontal stripes. It is easy to grow and will thrive in partial shade, which is an unusual feat for a succulent.

Everyday Cheapskate: 7 houseplants that are really hard to kill – Coos Bay World - March 5, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

I love houseplants, and I do have some beauties! The truth is I don't have a green thumb; I just know a few tricks and tips that I will gladly share with you. Healthy, beautiful houseplants are an economical way to bring instant warmth and beauty to a home, condo, apartment, dorm room, recreational vehicle -- or wherever else you call home.

I have friends who, I swear, were born with a green thumb. These talented people effortlessly grow lush, beautiful, exotic plants indoors. Then, there are the rest of us.

Here's my best-kept horticultural secret: I only consider plants in what I call the "thrivus neglectus" family, which comes from the Latin root meaning "really cheap and thrives even under the harshest conditions of poor light and owner neglect."

    KNOW YOUR VARIETIES

If growing beautiful houseplants in your home or office isn't your forte, I have good news. It is possible to have lovely plants if you pick the right variety -- those that are hard to kill.

Peace lily: The indoor plant spathiphyllum, with its graceful nickname "peace lily," is an easy-care, low-light houseplant. It's beautiful, lush and fast-growing. Can you see a peace lily in every room?

Cast-iron plant: Aspidistra is also known as the "cast-iron plant," and for good reason. This baby can survive any condition, including low light and a dry environment. It has earned its nickname because it can survive in deep shade and does not like direct sun or extreme cold.

Devil's ivy: Epipremnum aureum, commonly called "pothos" or "devil's ivy," comes in many varieties that tolerate poor light and actually enjoy being left alone. Nearly fuss-free, this lush, leafy evergreen pothos plant will tolerate a range of indoor growing conditions, including heat, aridity and dry shade.

Rubber plant: Ficus elastica, or "rubber plant," likes a cool, dimly lit space. But if you should happen to set it in a sunny area, watch out. It will grow like crazy, and you'll be searching on the internet for how to prune the darned thing!

Spider plant: Also known as chlorophytum comosum, "spider plant" is tough and does well in low light. It sends out these really cool trailing vines that develop tiny dangling baby "spiders" instead of flowers. Really cool!

Corn plant: Dracaena, or "corn plant," is a great choice for hot, dry apartments. This plant is a popular ornamental houseplant, grown both indoors and outdoors in subtropical climates. Bright indirect light is best for corn plant. Too much light can cause the leaves to burn. It reaches a height of about 3 feet indoors and has a bushy tree type of look. A corn plant's glossy leaves can grow up to 1 foot long and a couple of inches wide.

Mother-in-law's tongue: The ever-popular sansevieria trifasciata, nicknamed "snake plant" or "mother-in-law's tongue" (best nickname ever), likes full sun to low light source and even moisture. It will survive even under the most severely neglectful conditions. Sansevieria trifasciata is prized for its stiff, upright leaves that range from 1 to 8 feet tall, depending on the variety.

    KNOW WHERE TO BUY

I'm a huge fan of the Walmart and Target garden departments. Home improvement centers like Home Depot and Lowe's are excellent sources as well. Just look for the bargain table and you'll run right into the plants on my list above.

    KNOW WHEN TO WATER

Unlike silk and plastic, live houseplants do require water, and watering weekly is good. Pick a day, any day -- and then water your plants on the same day every week. Don't overdo it.

    KNOW YOUR MAINTENANCE

Keep the leaves of your plants clean. Dust plugs the pores and prevents plants from taking in the carbon dioxide from the air. A damp cloth once every few weeks will do the trick.

Live plants are an inexpensive way to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in any living space. As a bonus, they improve indoor air quality.

Select plants that require little or no care, and you'll save yourself both time and money.

Smith: The world’s largest indoor trout pond is a magnet for young and old every year at the Sports Show – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - March 5, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

WEST ALLIS The clock struck noon Wednesday, the doors opened, the rush was on.

As the initial crowd ofpatrons swelled intothe 2020 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Sports Show, it signaled not only the start of the 80th annual event but the beginning of new opportunities.

    A new fishing season, even.

"Trout pond, that's where we're headed," said Rod MacDonald, 77, of Menomonee Falls. "It's our tradition."

MacDonald was first in line to buy tickets Wednesday at the indoor fishing hole. At his side were hisgrandson Han MacDonald, 14, and granddaughter Abi MacDonald, 11, both of Menomonee Falls.

Most of Wisconsin has acatch-and-release troutseason that runs from January to early May.

But inthe temperature-controlled environs ofthe Wisconsin State Fair Park Exposition Center, Sports Show attendees are treated to a five-day catch-keep-eatseason in theworld's biggest indoor trout pond.

Loyal groups of Sports Show attendees make beelines each year to two attractions after the opening bell: the Department of Natural Resources booth to buy fishing and hunting licenses, and the trout pond.

"I think this is more fun," MacDonald said, picking up a rod at the water's edge.

The trout pond hasbeen a feature of the Sports Show since its inception, according to the late show promoterand historian Bob Gautsche of Hayward.

A decade ago Gautsche told me a precious story from the early days of the show when a seal, trained to perform in another attraction, got out of its cage and waddled over for a sashimi dinner at the fish-filled pool.

The smell of fresh trout was too much for it to resist.

The anglers who return year-after-year feel a similar pull.

By 12:05, a line of several dozen people formed behind the MacDonald clan.

They included 11 members of the Heritsch family spanning three generations and ranging in age from 2 to 64.

"He makes us get (to the Sports Show)20minutes early," said Bobbi Heritsch Schmeling, 32, of Brookfield, referring to her father, P.J. Heritsch, 64, of New Berlin.

Some anglers use solunar tables and moon phase charts to guide their fishing times.

Sports Show anglers do just fine with awrist watch and acalendar.

"Well, if I've learned one thing, it's good fishing when the show opens," Hertisch said. "We bring the whole family and have a ball."

Bobbi Schmeling of Brookfield attempts to hold a brook trout caught by her daughter Allie at the trout pond at the Sports Show.(Photo: Paul A. Smith)

Heritsch is keeping to a tradition that runs deep. He has been fishing at the Sports Show trout pond for 60 years.

"His father brought him when he was little, so we started our kids now our grandkids as soon as they can walk," said Patricia Heritsch.

The Sports Show trout pond is no ordinary waterhole.

At 75 by 15 feet and filled with 7,500 gallons of Wisconsin's finest groundwater, there is no bigger indoor trout pond on the planet, according to Jim Hill of W.N.C. Mountain Trout Fishing, owner and operator of the attraction.

In fact, the liner is so big and heavy Hill leaves it in Milwaukee year-round.

He does trout ponds at about 25 shows a year, from Maine to Texas; most use a "puddle" about 16 feet long.

"None of the other shows justify this," Hill said, nodding at the oval indoor lake.

The pond is surrounded by a wooden rail fence; duck decoys floated on the water. Several pumps keep the water flowing.

The primary attraction was finning in the current.

Earlier Wednesday morning, ahatchery truck from Silver Moon Springs Trout Farm in Elton delivered 1,000 pounds of trout to their new and temporary home in West Allis.

Hill said the Sports Show trout pond has another distinction: it's the only site where anglers have fallen in.

One was a teenage boy who leaned too far forward as he tried to coax a distant fish. He got wet to his knees.

The other was to a 50ish man whose ample physique might have caused a loss of balance and definitely resulted in a full-body splash down. "He floated half the pool before we got a hold of him," Hill said. "Someone hooked his wallet."

At about 12:10, anglers ringed the pond and Hill gave the green light.

The 2020 Sports Show trout season was on.

P.J. Heritsch of New Berlin helps hold a brook trout caught by his granddaughter Annabelle Schmeling, 3, of Brookfield, at the trout pond at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Sports Show.(Photo: Paul A. Smith)

Within seconds, a half-dozen rods vibrated to the force of lively trout. The Uncle Josh pork rind baits were too much for the fish to resist.

"I got one, I got one!" said Annabelle Schmeling, 3, of Brookfield, as her grandfather P.J. Heritsch helped lift the line.

Got one she did. A beautiful 12-inch brook trout was soon taken off her hook and dispatched and Annabelle was on her way to try for a two-fish limit.

The rest of the Hertisch group did plenty of catching, too.

Their fish were bagged by trout pond staff and stored in a freezer on-site. The free service allows successful anglers to walk the show without fish in tow.

As the showgoes on andthe bite changes, the crew will tie on different baits, Hill said. More fish will be added to the pond, too.

For the Hertisch family, the traditional opening day Sports Show visittransitions into an evening dinner at P.J. and Pat's home in New Berlin.

"Fresh trout on the table and family all around," P.J. Heritsch said. "It's a heck of a day."

Room by Room, Automation is Changing Interior Architecture – ArchDaily - March 5, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Room by Room, Automation is Changing Interior Architecture

    Facebook

    Twitter

    Whatsapp

    Mail

    Or

Robotics and automation are a staple of any vision of how we will live in the future. Among architects and designers, this trend crosses a variety of scales, from smart cities to smart kitchens. As we outlined in our Trends That Will Influence Architecture in 2019, recent years has seen a strengthening in how interior spaces are being transformed by technologies, with searches for Domotics soaring by 450% in twelve months.

    + 9

While utopian (and dystopian) visions of interior spaces alive with responsive automated systems are still largely unrealized, there is clear evidence from architecture firms and product manufacturers alike that the growing domination of robotics and automation we see in transport, finance, security and other sectors is also finding its feet in interior design. Below, we outline four areas where innovations have already been showcased and adopted.

While robotics is often envisioned as a tool for performance in interior spaces, its use also extends to aesthetics. In 2018, Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA) unveiled Scribit, a writing robot which draws images and text on any wall surface, turning office, living areas, and bathroom walls into a blank canvas for artistic expression. Using in-built engines, Scribit can draw, cancel, and re-draw new content an infinite number of times, allowing users to print different images, messages, or feeds every day.

Scribit is always connected to the internet, allowing users to download, upload or source any online content. Operating in real time, Scribit immediately reproduces any data sent to it by the user, be it a restaurant posting the days menu, a financial firm posting stock market updates in its lobby, or an art enthusiast projecting their own content on the living room wall.

The future of robotics in interior design will inevitably impact on how furniture is used and adapted, given how our increasing habitation of smaller spaces in cities calls for creative approaches to interior flexibility. Start-up innovators Bumblebee Spaces breaks the third dimension in pursuit of comfortable, efficient living, with what they describe as a robotic A.I. butler furniture system that deploys down from overhead by tapping a control pad or by voice command.

Drawing inspiration from minimalism and the KonMari anti-clutter movement, the Bumblebee system also creates a log of items kept in its timber storage cubes for long periods of time, gently reminding the user of when it may be time to let go of their long-forgotten possessions.

Interior lighting is a prime target for automation, given the existing technologies that sense human presence and movement through spaces. Automated lighting controls have the potential to save energy in homes by limiting excess light in unoccupied rooms, while also enhancing occupant safety and convenience. One such example from our product catalog is Gira, whose system of automatic lighting control extends through home entrances, drives, hallways, and staircases.

Meanwhile, the MIT Senseable City Lab has, through its Local Warming project, explored the possibilities of a thermal cloud following humans through interior space. This thermal cloud would allow for infrared heating elements to merge with motion tracking, creating a precise personal climate for every occupant of interior spaces, enhancing comfort while reducing unnecessary heating of empty rooms.

As we explored during our month-long focus on Innovation, home automation is even transforming rooms as basic and personal as bathrooms. While smart mirrors offer possibilities such as reading the news while brushing teeth, a new generation of showers are promising to save up to 90% of water and 80% of energy. These technologies constitute only a small fraction of the possibilities for the bathroom of the future. From body dryers to health-checking toothbrushes, to drawers that warm your towels, to flooring that sends out an alert if you fall, the possibilities seem endless.

With a vast array of robotic appliances and systems entering the market, architects and designers are faced with the challenge of designing and specifying for these systems implementation. Recently, we collaborated with AVE Chile to outline 8 tips on how architects can incorporate domotics into their next project, from testing systems before the process to installations by electrical specialists.

Light at the end of the tunnel; wildlife group looking to reunite Peli the pelican with flock – Revelstoke Review - March 5, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

A wildlife group is hoping to reunite a lone pelican with his flock after almost six months apart.

Since October 16, 2019, an endangered American White Pelican by the name of Peli has been on the mend in Burnaby, B.C. after becoming injured by a fishing line on the shores of a lake near Oliver.

This occurred while Peli and his family were migrating south for winter, towards warmer climates. After he was injured, his flock departed and left him alone. He has since been recovering from an injury and infection to his left wing.

Pelis injuries have since healed, however antibiotics and physiotherapy are still needed to help continue his healing. The wildlife group caring for him is hoping to raise enough funds to upgrade their aquatic centre so Peli can practice flying again.

The goal is to re-join him with his flock when they do return to the breeding grounds in Williams Lake, said Wildlife Rescue Association of BC communications coordinator, Vindi Sekhon.

Biologists are monitoring the breeding grounds for when his flock returns, which they anticipate will be in the spring.

In the meantime, veterinarians and wildlife technicians are focused on ensuring that Peli is in a proper state to be released.

This is the first time the group has had to keep an animal for such an extended period of time. This served as an especially unique situation for the team as they were not equipped to care for an animal, throughout the winter, which was used to temperatures of that in Mexico and California.

The team recently acquired an indoor heated pool, which helps animals like Peli recover and stay strong.

What were trying to do is, we dont want to habituate Peli because he has had an extended stay with us, said Sekhon.

To help achieve this the group is keeping minimal contact with the bird while ensuring he continues to recover.

On Tuesday morning (March 3) the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC launched a campaign in commemoration of World Wildlife Day. For five days the campaign will help promote Pelis story, in the hopes it will help return him to his flock.

So far the campaign has reached two per cent of its $48,000 goal, money they hope to receive in order to upgrade the aquatics centre to give Peli room to dive, bath and exercise his flight.

The group says this will help ensure he is released in the right condition.

We dont want to return and rejoin Peli back with his flock if hes not adapted to that natural environment again, Sekhon explained. Thats always our goal at the end of the day.

Having an endangered pelican in their care centre, Sekhon said has been an amazing experience for them. However it has encouraged them to evolve and retrofit their facility in order to help endangered species like these recover.

She furthered that the group has received some questions from the public as to why they didnt already transport Peli south and return him with his flock. To this, she said its a complicated process, especially when the animal is injured.

The permits (to cross the border) state that the species need to pass the health check we werent really left with a choice; there was no way that we could have rejoined Peli with his flock because his injuries were so severe.

The wildlife group says this injury sustained by Peli shows the potential risk of human interference and disturbance.

It was a fishing line hook; it is a topic on its own, but also it just shows the impact that as humans we can have when we are sharing space with species, Sekhon said.

She said World Wildlife Day serves as a time to remember this.

The Space Mountain roller coaster is a pillar attraction at Walt Disney World and is the very symbol of Tomorrowland. Arguably the most sought-after of the Moutain Trifecta, it possesses a sense of mysticism to it. Its an indoor roller coaster where you rocket into outer space and speed across the galaxy. So, because youre supposed to be in outer space, you only ride this attraction in the dark. And because it only operates in the dark, Disney fans and Cast Members alike all have ride Space Mountain with the lights on somewhere on their Disney Bucket List and who can blame them?
