More than five million acres have burned across California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington State this year. In California alone, fires have burned more than 4.1 million acres, destroyed 10,488 homes and other structures and led to at least 31 deaths.

There were concerns on Tuesday about whether the wildfires could affect voting in Orange County, where thousands of people are under evacuation orders. Numerous places around Irvine and other parts of the county, such as parks and schools and community centers, had been set up as evacuation centers. At least four of those sites, officials said, are also slated to be voting centers, raising the possibility that they may not be able to open for voters later in the week if the fires do not subside.

Right now were at a wait and see, said Neal Kelley, Orange Countys registrar of voters. Well start making decisions tomorrow.

Mr. Kelley said he had been in consultation with fire officials on Tuesday, and had been told they were hopeful that the winds would subside, and that evacuees would be able to go home in time for voting. He said the countys plan had been to set up the voting sites on Thursday, to be ready to open on Friday.

More than 750 firefighters have been battling the blazes, which were known to have damaged 10 homes as of late Tuesday afternoon. But the area of concern widened as winds blew the fires to new areas, including toward Chino Hills, a city of about 84,000 people that sits at the corner of Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside Counties.

EVART The Evart city council was presented with an assessment of the facilities at the Riverside Park West campground at its recent meeting.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the campground remained closed this season, which allowed for an in-depth assessment of the campground assets as they exist in their current condition, city manager Sarah Dvoracek told the council on Oct. 19. Much of the infrastructure related to the campground dates to the 1970s and needs substantial upgrades for continued use.

According to the assessment provided to the council members, very few upgrades have taken place at the campground since the 1980s, leaving the campground in need of substantial upgrades if the city plans to continue to operate a safe and secure campground.

Steve Bacon of Mr. Electric Central Michigan said, after viewing the electrical system, that it is antiquated and undersized for todays campers and RVs.

It is showing signs of fatigue and corrosion, and upon investigation of the pedestal interiors, I found a major amount of corrosion and deterioration of wire connections and terminals as well as damage to wires and loose connections, Bacon said in a letter to the city.

Bacon said, in addition, the panels are antiquated and showing signs of deterioration, and are not suited for the electrical load they might be under, and the transformer is undersized for the electrical load it would carry.

The system could fail, or worse case, cause fire under the right circumstances, he said. A complete replacement of the electrical system is recommended for safety and efficiency.

Over the past five years there have been numerous electrical issues including overheating of wires, tripping of breakers and frequent replacement of breakers, the assessment report said.

Other areas of concern addressed in the assessment report included, the roofs on the office building and the restroom facility needing replaced, cracks in the cement walls of the structures, antiquated plumbing and fixtures, which are prone to leaks, poor condition of the shower facilities, and the RV dump station needing upgrades.

The dump station is tied to the city wastewater system and much of the plumbing has been repaired with a mismatch of various plumbing parts over the years and pose a risk of failure that would not allow for proper cleanup of a sewage spill, the report said.

The assessment report offered three options for the city council to consider rehabilitation and renovation of the campground, maintenance of the current status with a reduced level of service at the campground, or permanent closure of the campground.

To continue the operation of the campground at Riverside Park, consideration must be given to a complete upgrade of the campground, Dvoracek said. The upgrade could be completed over the course of one season, and the suggested life cycle of such upgrades would be 20 years.

The estimated cost to refurbish and rehabilitate the campground, submitted from Wolverine Building Group in Evart, is $227,400.

The estimated cost to preserve the current condition and offer a reduced level of service is $13,000, which would include roof replacements and restroom/shower facility upgrades.

Permanent closure of the campground would require removal of the electrical pedestals and water spigots, as well as roof repairs on the structures. The estimated cost for that is $10,500.

According to information provided by Dvoracek, revenue from the campsite has been $3,000 to $5,000 each year, while expenditures for a camp host, maintenance and operations of the campground have been around $10,000, indicating that the campground operates at a substantial loss every year.

No action was taken on the campground. The council will be seeking quotes for upgrades, Dvoracek said.

Mr Palladino said better regulation and quality training was needed, but he feared it would take a death to spark reform. He said it took the hospital death of a baby to improve the regulation of gas fitting in NSW.

"Forty per cent of all house fires are electrical. We have to ask the question is somebody going to die before we do something," he said.

He said NSW training providers received about $13,250 in funding to train an apprentice electrician which was a "very lean price" compared to other states that received about 40 per cent more.

"In Victoria they pay $19,800 to train an electrician. In South Australia they pay $18,000," he said. "We've been very lucky for many years because we've had good TAFE colleges that are doing the best they can with resources that are just decaying."

NSW Skills and Tertiary Education Minister Geoff Lee said more than 45,000 apprentices have started fee-free training since 2018.

Tom Emeleus, general manager for the National Electrical Communications Association (NECA) said some vocational training providers have issued a certificate three for electricians "perhaps without the level of scrutiny that they should have had". He said NSW should follow Victoria and Western Australia which requires an additional independent test to qualify for a licence.

A spokeswoman for NSW Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation Kevin Anderson said electrical installations are "tightly regulated".

"Fair Trading will not hesitate to take sanctions and issue on-the-spot fines of up to $22,000 for any individual or $110,000 for any company who performs unlicensed work," she said.

The department said it has 72 building officers including 24 investigators who check compliance. Three are qualified electricians. There are 69,395 licensed electricians in NSW.

NECA technical adviser Grant Moorhouse said while heavy penalties may apply, there is little regulation of electrical work to enforce penalties for breaches.

"With three electrical inspectors for the whole of NSW, there's not a lot happening. With no checks and balances it is a bit of a lottery," he said.

"Nothing is going to change unless there is a death."

Fair Trading sent a letter to a tradesman on March 1 last year warning he faced fines for being unlicensed but that the regulator "does not propose to take further action at this time".

Justin Page, secretary of the Electrical Trade Union NSW and ACT branch said the response was inadequate.

Everyday people are paying the costs when fake sparkies turn up to work and put their lives at risk. The government is aware of the problem, but so far, ignoring the risks, he said.

In a submission to the upcoming state budget, the union has warned the use of unlicensed contractors is not being adequately regulated and monitored, including on major infrastructure projects. It has provided a NSW parliamentary committee with examples of advertisements for unlicensed contractors.

The ETU has urged the NSW government to eliminate the use of untrained electricians and to follow Victoria's example by introducing an electricity regulator to oversee safety, licensing, and training.

A NSW parliamentary inquiry into the building industry earlier this year recommended the introduction of a building commission empowered to oversee all licensing inspections. It said the commission should "hire additional, specialised inspectors to create a more robust inspection regime" for building, electrical and plumbing work in NSW.

Your old charging cord may be just the type of electrical wire theyre looking for. You could try listing what you have on Craigslist.

Most of the metal recycling centers will accept old wires and cables for the copper inside it. In some cases, they might accept only the metal wire, in which case youd need to remove the plastic covering/insulation first.

You could also sell to electrical liquidators. These are companies that buy old electronic goods to sell to manufacturers or other people who need them. The quantity they accept depends on the company you visit. You cannot go with just one or two cables, but if you have one or more boxes of cables, they might be interested.

One of the best things to do with your old electrical wires and cables is to reuse them with your new gadgets.

A lot of charging cords and cables work with multiple gadgets. While this may not be true for Apple products but often, you can reuse an old cable or plug with a different electronic device.
