Alex Hawkinsons house knows how to make his day.
As the 41-year-old father of two gets out of bed, the lights flicker on and the air temperature starts to warm. He walks down the stairs, and a Siri-like voice greets him from his Sonos sound system: Todays forecast is By the time he reaches for his mug of coffeeit began brewing automaticallythat womans voice has morphed into an NPR broadcast, and Hawkinson is checking his phone, which will receive a text if his 4-year-old son runs out the front door before breakfast. Should Hawkinson open the liquor cabinet, intentionally or not, his house will object. Isnt it a wee bit early?
If Hawkinson has his way, every family in the U.S. will be living like this within the next decade or so. And it will be largely thanks to his company, SmartThings, which has built a first-of-its-kind platform that allows the objects in your homedoors, locks, lightbulbs, even sprinkler systemsto talk to one another and prioritize your needs. Its only requirements: a smartphone, a $200 starter kit (including sensors and a hub they sync with) and a wild imagination.

If this narrative sounds familiar, thats because it is: companies have been promising the dawn of the smart homea futuristic dwelling full of gadgets working seamlessly to satisfy your every whimsince the 50s. Yet early efforts failed to deliver because of clunky tech and consumer wariness.
SmartThings, which launched in 2012, has arrived amid a legitimate sea change in home automation. In the past few years, the rise of cloud computing has made it easier than ever to build gadgets that connect to the so-called Internet of Things, meaning they can be monitored and controlled from afar, usually with their own smartphone app. Theres also been an uptick in the production of sensors and devices that enable you to smartify objects that are dumb. (Think plugging a desk lamp into an adapter controlled by your phone, or rigging a door with a motion detector that pings you about intruders.) By 2018, the research firm IHS Technology predicts, people will have installed 45 million smart-home services. Were really starting to see major volume here, says Lisa Arrowsmith, an IHS associate director. Its an exciting time.
But the race to make those gadgets and sensors work together has only just begun. Much as Google and Yahoo created search engines as a way to bring order to the Internet in the 90s, startups and established players alikeincluding Apple, AT&T and Googleare now enabling you to command the Internet of your home. Whoever creates the most compelling platform will not only revolutionize how we live but also command a huge share of whats expected to be a $12 billion annual business within five years.

Your grill (and what's on it) may be the star of your next barbecue, but your house and deck could get less-than-rave reviews if their finishes have faded, notes Consumer Reports.
More manufacturers are promising greater longevity with long warranties that cover the cracking and dirt most homeowners gripe about. Paints that brush on without priming first and a stain you can roll over wet wood are time-savers, whether you hire a pro or do the job yourself. Roughly 25 percent of homeowners paint their own house, and 75 percent do the deck.
Ace Hardware's Royal Exteriors now rivals Home Depot's Behr and Lowe's Valspar, two of Consumer Reports' top satin and semigloss paints. As with the Behr and Valspar, both Ace paints have a lifetime warranty and endured the equivalent of nine years outdoors without cracks. And at less than $30 per gallon, they cost up to $11 less. But the home center brands proved to be better at fending off dirt and mildew.
Home Depot is also facing tougher competition among the solid color deck stains that last longest and sell best at stores. Benjamin Moore's Arborcoat Solid Deck and Siding, $46, looked better than Behr's Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain after two years of tests, and it fared just as well after three. But the Behr still wins in the war against dirt and mildew, and it costs almost $20 less.
Consumer Reports' relentless outdoor tests under broiling sun and freezing snow also confirm that even top-performing brands could leave you cold if you buy the wrong line or shop at the wrong store. Some time-savings claims didn't deliver.
And if you think you're fully covered by lifetime and other paint and stain warranties, think again. Outdoor testing shows that some paints and stains with similar warranties perform very differently. These tests are especially tough, but they suggest that some finishes could let you down quickly, regardless of warranty coverage.
HOW TO CHOOSE
Pick a paint based on your project. Flat and satin are what most people choose for siding, and semigloss adds sheen and contrast for trim. Among stains, solids hide the beauty of the grain in exchange for longer life; clear finishes show it all, but usually last no longer than a year. A smart compromise: Semitransparent stains, which show some of the grain and can still look good after two years. Here's what else to keep in mind as you're shopping:
-- Consider the store. Most of the best paints and stains that Consumer Reports tested still come from Behr, making Home Depot your one-stop shopping destination if you're doing your house and deck. Its tests also found that the Glidden Premium Satin sold at Home Depot is generally a better bet than the Glidden Endurance Plus at Wal-Mart, though the Wal-Mart product is self-priming.
-- Plan around promos and sales. Holiday weekends such as Memorial Day and Father's Day can bring storewide discounts of 30 percent or more. You'll also save year-round by buying 5-gallon containers instead of the usual gallon cans.

LAS VEGAS Home warranties are something many southern Nevadans rely on, but what happens when your home warranty company doesn't deliver in your time of need?
In theory, home warranties sound like a good idea. If something goes wrong with an appliance in your home, you pay an affordable deductible and they foot the bill to fix it or get it replaced. But, 8 On Your Side has found out more often than not it doesn't quite work out that way.
So, what's the deal?
First, when you need a repair, you must make a claim, pay a deductible, and then use a repairmen of your warranty company's choosing. That's when you find out if it can go fast or very slowly.
"You have literally no say in who fixes it or how fast its done," says 8 On Your Side's Michelle Mortensen.
There's also a second problem. One that homeowner Fay Zoeller recently ran into.
After Zoeller's air conditioning broke, it took forever to talk to a real person. Once she did, they sent several repairmen. One-by-one, however, they refused the job.
"He called me on Monday and said, 'I'm sorry. My boss says we can't take the job that this company is not in good standing and they don't pay bills,'" Zoeller said.
Which leads to the third problem: most of these companies are based out-of-state, have bad reputations, and are impossible to get ahold of.
Because of issues Zoeller had, her A/C unit is now past her policy's expiration.
