Dryvit method suspected as cause of instant spread in Uijeongbu fire JANUARY 13, 2015 07:11 Dryvit method suspected as cause of instant spread in Uijeongbu fire . JANUARY 13, 2015 07:11. . Samsung Techwin has signed a contract to supply around 800,000 smart home security cameras (see photo) with AT&T, the largest communications service provider in the U.S., and Securitas Direct, a European home security service provider, the company said on Monday.
For the next three years, Samsung Techwin will provide more than 300,000 security cameras to AT&T and 500,000 to Securities Direct. Samsung Techwins home securities cameras allow smart home monitoring based on Internet of Things technology.
The global video monitoring market is expected to grow from approximately 1.7 trillion won (1.57 billion U.S. dollars) last year to about 25 trillion won (23 billion dollars) in 2017. Samsung Techwin has a goal of topping the worlds video monitoring network market.
We plan to increase the product line-up amid consumers recent growing interest in smart home services, a s Many experts say that the fire that broke out on the first floor of an apartment building in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, instantly spread to higher levels because the building was constructed by adopting the "dryvit" method. This method entails the application of urethane foam or Styrofoam on the exterior wall of a building before applying cement mortar or other finish materials. The method is preferred by building owners, because it is cheaper by more than 50 percent than the use of stone to finish the exterior wall, and the construction period can be cut nearly in half. In fact, this method is more widely used for buildings designed for unique exterior looks, including lodging facilities, wedding halls or studio apartment buildings, rather than those for housing.
In a 2010 experiment, the Korea Institute of Construction Technology tried to set fire to inside of wall measuring three meters wide and six meters long after installing exterior material by using dryvit method, to find that the wall caught fire in a matter of just 90 seconds. The fire completely engulfed the exterior wall in four minutes, with intense flames reaching as high as six meters, generating black toxic gas. The situation was a copycat of Saturdays fire in Uijeongbu.
Shin Hyeon-joon, a senior researcher at KICT, said on Monday, It is a dangerous material because it easily catches fire, and generates highly toxic gas. When burning in fire, it causes massive dust, and a person who inhaled smoke could suffer damage in the lung.
Soon after the eruption of the Uijeongbu fire, the Public Safety and Security Ministry vowed to start a campaign to crack down on the use of exterior materials that are susceptible to fire. Prior to Monday`s urgent briefing on pending issues at the parliamentary committee on Security and Public Administration, the ministry said it would toughen standards for exterior finish materials of buildings as a follow-on measure for the fire disaster in Uijeongbu apartment building. The ministry plans to oblige building owners and builders to use fire retardant materials, irrespective of the buildings height or use, when installing insulation material on the exterior wall. Under the current law, no regulation obliges the builder or building owner to use fire retardant material, except in high-rise buildings, factory buildings and facilities used by the public within commercial districts.

At the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, LG unveiled a series of household appliances that can receive, interpret and send texts: a washing machine that, when asked, reports how much time is left in a cycle; or a refrigerator that alerts the owner when food is about to expire.
These are among several recent product announcements surrounding the smart home a futuristic vision of households constantly monitoring their own activity, alerting the owners smartphone when windows are opened, electricity left on, or clothes are done drying.
In the past year, start-ups, technology giants and telecommunications companies have made their own smart-home bids, according to Gartner analyst Fernando Elizalde. But compared with the rapid development of new products, consumer adoption has been slow as people gradually become more comfortable with the smart home, he added in an e-mail.
That hasnt stopped companies from jumping in.
At CES, Lowes promoted Iris, a network that lets customers manage the data generated by disparate WiFi-enabled devices, such as thermostats or appliances. Whirlpool showed off a washing machine hooked up to an app that lets people donate to a charity such as Habitat for Humanity every time they do laundry.
This past February, Google acquired Nest a start-up selling thermostats that can adjust to a users preferences for $3.2 billion.
In November, French telecommunications company Orange announced Homelive, a solution letting customers manage their appliances remotely. And in June, Apple announced HomeKit, an operating system framework on which software and hardware developers can build smart-home systems.
It could be years before consumers have a real digital household, according to recent reports, and progress is likely to be incremental.
A Gartner consumer survey from the summer found that 20percent of respondents have one or more smart-home devices. About 16 percent of these had only one device, while just about 4 percent had two or more. A Nielsen survey conducted in the second quarter of 2014 found about 6percent of respondents used smart-home technology: Within these, about 61 percent used wireless home security, 54 percent used it for automating some function (such as adjusting heat or lights), 25 percent used connected appliances and 27 percent used wireless speaker systems.
Still, home technology sales are increasing, according to the Consumer Electronics Association, the Arlington-based trade group that organizes CES. Home technologies generated an estimated $1.9 billion in sales in 2014, up from $1.7 billion in 2013, according to CEA.

"He knew somebody was home," homeowner Armando Correa says. "All the trucks were out there, the door was cracked. He knew we were home."
(KPRC) A FedEx driver has been suspended after being accused of taking two puppies from the front of a Houston, Texas family's home.
The incident was caught on the home's surveillance cameras. Around 4:30 pm Wednesday, a delivery truck is seen stopping in the middle of southeast Houston cul-de-sac.
A driver gets out and for nearly 10 minutes attempts to put Bruno and Sheila, 6-month-old French bulldogs, inside his truck. While securing Bruno inside, Sheila escapes and runs back to the home's front door.
The driver is then seen picking up Sheila by the front door, taking her back to the truck and driving away.
"He knew somebody was home," homeowner Armando Correa says. "All the trucks were out there, the door was cracked. He knew we were home."
The family posted the video on social media and went viral.
Thursday, Correa said he went to FedEx offices looking for the driver and called the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Just after 6 pm Thursday, the family got a call from Kirkwood Veterinary Hospital.
The vet said someone found the puppies wandering the cold streets Wednesday night more than 20 miles from the Correa's home.
