Smart Home & Neighbor Watch: A New Security Model? - April 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

For so very long, the central promise of home security services has centered on the idea of central monitoring. You know the drill: when an alarm is triggered, someone in a call center springs into action, calling the house and alternate numbers while also alerting emergency responders like the police if it appears to be a legitimate event.

All this is well and good, but heres the problem: While central monitoring services are quick to respond (often within seconds), those who are supposed to do something- the police often dont get around to the house until long after an intruder is gone. According to the Bureau of Justice, 69% of police responses take longer than 5 minutes, and 45% of responses take longer than 10 minutes.

Its not like the police arent doing their jobs, its just that they often have more pressing business, andtheres a good chance theyre wary of the many false alarms that come from home security systems.

All this begs the question: Are we doing home security wrong? Doesrelying on central monitoring and a police response mean home security services arent as effective as they could be?

Quite possibly, and it seems like over the next few years we will give this idea of the central monitoring station as home security lynchpin a rethink.

So what other approach could we take? For one, we could take a cue from Neighborhood Watch programs, where the neighborhood itself organizes and works together to monitor suspicious activity. Data has shown that Neighborhood watch programs work and actually reduce criminal activity.

Thats great, you say, but how could the neighborhood work together to respond in actual invasion events? First off, I dont suggest vigilante justice; the last thing we need is people taking to the streets with guns. But what I would suggest is possibly using alarm monitoring solutions combined with instant communication to notify others, a neighborhood security circle if you will, that would allow a neighborhood torespond by watching at that time for suspicious activity, locking their own doors, and maybeeven snapping pictures of bad guys.

Watchful Neighbors and Smart Home Tech: A new security model?

In some ways this is happening already. Some home security offerings let consumers create a list of friends who can be notified in case of an event via text, and often this includes neighbors. But what if we took it a step further, creating neighborhood networks of security, where everyone on the street -and their homes -are notified (they can choose to opt out or not participate, of course) of an event immediately and they know what house the alert is coming from. Doors lock. Lights go on. Outside cameras go into full awake mode. All instantly and without a human needing to do it themselves.

Its worth thinking about. The goal of home securityshouldfirst be as a deterrent and then as a way to actually catch the bad guys. The reality is, however, catching is difficult as most crooks know to leave quickly before the police arrive, so why dont we startthinking of ways to deter them that combines the power of neighborhood watch with smart home and IoTtechnology?

Home Security 2015: The Internet Of Things (IoT) Brings Innovation AND Danger - April 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Gail Dutton

A deadbolt used to provide ample home security. The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing that. If hackers can broach corporate security systems through their air conditioning controllers (like they did at Target Target), imagine what they can do with the IoT and your home WiFi network.

Suddenly your thermostat, fitness recorder, TV set-top box, and any other appliances that report to you are open doors to your WiFi, your computer and, ultimately, your personal and financial information.

For example, Todd Morris, CEO, Brickhouse Security, explains, Cable companies arent in the security business. They provide dumb pipes into homes. Then, they use the same type of routers for all their customers. Once a router is hacked, the entire customer base is vulnerable. Morris says hes replaced the cable router in his own home with a more secure model to minimize the chances of being hacked, and also has installed security software on phones and computers.

The internet of things (IoT) is changing how homeowners must think through the conveniences available from the smart home technology market verses the security risks.

    Cyber Threats Affect Homeowners, Too

For homeowners, cyber-crime is a real threat. ENISAs recent report, Threat Landscape in the Area of Smart Homes, identifies cyber-crime as the largest, most hostile danger individuals face, threatening finances as well as personal data.

There is an axiom in security that if its wireless, its hackable, notes Robert Siciliano, security expert at BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com. While this is true, the vulnerabilities are overblown. However, as wireless IoT devices proliferate, there will be increased attention on how to exploit them. Therefore, Morris cautions, Dont sacrifice security for convenience. Add functionality carefully. Many smart home devices consider security almost as an afterthought, he says. Amazons Echo is a good example. Its microphone allows Internet access by voice command. It is convenient, but, he says, A hacker could listen to conversations and access your Amazon account.

For maximum security, Morris recommends systems that are designed as security devices, with smart functionalities added. Such systems will alert the police to break-ins, but also can text you if the freezer door is ajar.

Startup looking to put Jackie drone on security patrol - April 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Jackie Wu and Ritwik Ummalaneni are aiming to give some tiny flying quadcopters a new job in home security. The idea is to have a Jackie drone linked to a home Wi-Fi network charged up and ready to patrol. Using a smartphone app, the home owner can remotely activate Jackie and fly it around the house to see what's going on with the help of video feeds from its onboard camera. It's still early days for the project, but a proof of concept prototype system has already clocked up some flight time and a Kickstarter campaign has been launched to bring the idea to life.

We've previously seen quite a few security cameras from the likes of Belkin, Withings and others that allow smartphone users to virtually look around a room when an alert is triggered. The problem with such technology is that if the camera is pointing the wrong way, unable to show what's lurking behind the sofa or not even in the same room as all the action, the user doesn't get to see what's caused the system to fire off an alert.

What's different about Jackie from Eight Six Ninety-One Technologies is that the security camera is mounted to a small drone that can be controlled over an internet connection using a smartphone app. The app will show the camera's point of view onscreen and the remote pilot will be able to fly the drone from room to room checking that all's well at home. At least that's the idea.

Anyone who has flown a quadcopter using a smartphone will know how difficult it can be even when you can see the drone right in front of you. Piloting a remote flyer around a home full of precious ornaments, top-heavy table lamps or expensive TVs using just the video feed on a smartphone screen for visuals may prove more harrowing than actually (virtually) confronting an intruder trying to make off with your knick-knacks.

"Stability and flying are our biggest concerns," Wu told us. "We are implementing a downward facing camera and stabilization algorithms to level the quadcopter, adding better controls and another microprocessor just for stability. This is something we are working on."

The specs of a consumer release drone are still being worked out, but it will carry a high def camera though the development team has yet to choose the actual model that will be carried by Jackie, telling us that "we have tested a nice 1080p HD camera that is light enough to be used." So, if having a camera-packing drone in hot pursuit isn't enough to persuade a would-be bandit to flee the scene, then at least a user might be able to give an identifying image or two to the authorities.

The team is estimating that the Jackie drone will be able to stay in the air for up to 6 minutes before needing to return to its base station for automated charging (top ups will take about 30 minutes). For the time being, remote flyers will need to navigate Jackie back to its wireless charging base station between scouting missions but the developers are looking into an auto return feature. The wireless charging pad will sport a microphone and speakers.

The proof of concept prototype you can see in the pitch video at the end is a modified Crazyflie, but the production version will be a proprietary design and will feature soft props and blade guards to minimize crash damage. Cloud-based computer vision algorithms are being developed to detect events or anomalies and the development team is promising an easy to use and intuitive smartphone control interface.

As well as applications in home security, the flying smartcam can also be used for peace of mind verification (such as checking that the door has been locked after the last occupant has left for work or making sure that the stove is turned off when there's no-one at home).

It's certainly an interesting idea but Wu and Ummalaneni, both former students of the Robotics program at Northwestern University, have got quite a bit of work to do and a number of obstacles to overcome before a production-ready flying home security cam gets off the ground. They report that they've already lined up some manufacturers with experience of quadcopter production to begin work on a market-ready design, get the electronics in order and increase Jackie's stability.
