Kejriwal given security without his knowledge: Shinde - January 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Hindu Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde

Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Friday disclosed that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was being provided security by the Central government without his knowledge and despite his repeated rejection of it. Mr. Shinde was speaking to reporters during his monthly press briefing.

Asked about providing security to the AAP leader in the wake of the attack on the party head office in Kaushambi (Ghaziabad) recently, Mr. Shinde said that it was the duty of the government and the Home Ministry to take care of the security of VVIPs and others based on threat perception. Mr. Shinde said security agencies had asked Mr. Kejriwal thrice and he refused twice. Even so, the Delhi Police Commissioner had spoken to the Ghaziabad Superintendent of Police to provide security to the Chief Minister as he lives in his area and also because the AAP headquarters is located there. The Delhi Police are under the Central government as Delhi has not been accorded full statehood.

    I face no threat

Mr. Kejriwal, who was simultaneously addressing a press meet to announce the launching of a nationwide free membership drive, declared that there was no threat to his life.

I have a long life-line, I do not need security, he said displaying his palm to journalists when asked about the offer of Z security by the Uttar Pradesh government.

The States offer came in the wake of Wednesdays attack over AAP leader Prashant Bhushans remark suggesting a referendum in Kashmir on the Armys presence.

The Chief Minister declared that in the first phase, the party was targeting a membership of one crore citizens by January 26. We have devised five easy ways for people to join the party and the Rs. 10 membership fee has been scrapped, Mr. Kejriwal said.

The membership drive would be through the party website, through SMS, missed calls, a door-to-door drive and through voter ID cards.

In fact, in the first three hours of his announcement, 47,500 people logged on to the AAP website for membership and 1,950 registered through mobile phones.

The ADT home security empire strikes back at CES - January 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Amid a flood of new competitors, the venerable security giant is offering users a bounty of new features.

These days, consumers interested in protecting their homes have more options than ever before, thanks to security-minded home automation services like SimpliSafe and fee-free, crowd-funded DIY upstarts like Piper and iSmartAlarm that continue to improve. That spells trouble for established industry leaders like ADT, as an increasing number of consumers are finding better value with the little guys.

Today, ADT answered back, announcing a sweeping list of upgrades to ADT Pulse, its premier home security package. Chief among these is the ADT Pulse Voice app, which will enable users to manage their home security and automation needs by way of simple voice commands. In addition, ADT announced Canopy, an app-based security system that promises to keep you covered (get it?) while on the go, providing live monitoring-based "Chaperone" service for situations like entering a dark parking garage or walking across campus at night. There are also additional remote controls for things like garage doors and ceiling fans, along with a new wireless touch-screen control panel -- perhaps a bit of a nod to the popularity of unobtrusive DIY setups that can be installed quickly and don't need to be hard-wired into your home.

The "Chaperone" feature in ADT's new Canopy app will offer live monitoring-based protection while you're on the go.

On top of these upgrades, ADT announced multiple strategic partnerships to help expand the scope of its service. Thanks to a new deal with McAfee, ADT will now offer its users in-depth digital security for their data and devices. A partnership with Ford will put ADT's new voice controls into vehicles equipped with Ford Sync AppLink. A continued relationship between ADT and Ideal Life will allow for focused health and care-giving support.

Beyond those partnerships, ADT is also making a surprising move for an entrenched leader in what some might have called a mature industry. ADT will be offering Canopy integration to third-party hardware manufacturers. That means smaller security device makers will be able to make use of Canopy, and ADT's monitoring service, in their own products.

By offering that monitoring to others, ADT capitalizes on its successful service side, while also strengthening the security offerings and easing the burden of a service overhead from any hardware partner that wants in. That's a savvy move by ADT, and not one we expected.

As strategic shifts go, this one seems to come at a good time for ADT, as the industry bar is definitely rising. Multiyear contracts and significant monthly fees are getting tougher and tougher to justify in light of the competition, and short of reworking its entire business model, the most obvious way for ADT to remain competitive is beefing up its offerings. There's no word yet on how the new services will affect pricing, but you can expect more information closer to the planned rollout this spring.

Samsung Smart Home aims to integrate all your smart devices on one platform - January 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LAS VEGASThe problem with most connected home products is that the reality usually doesnt live up to the name. Its not your whole home thats connectedyour Wi-Fi scale talks to one app, while your lights are controlled by a different app. So is that fancy smart smoke detector.

Samsung wants to change this with Samsung Smart Home, an integrated platform that will let you connect and control all your smart devices (TVs, appliances, lights, security cameras, you name it) from a single Smart Home application.

The electronics giant announced Samsung Smart Home on Sunday, one day before its press conference at CES 2014, and plans to roll out the product during the first half of this year.

The Smart Home application will have three main sections at first:Device Control, Home View, and Smart Customer Service.

Device Control lets you set up behaviors for when youre home or away. For example, you could tell your Galaxy Gear smartwatch that youre going out (yes, it has voice control, and yes, this would be the coolest use of the Gear by far if it really works), which could turn down the heat, shut off the lights, and fire up your robot vacuum. Only Samsung products will be supported at first, but Samsungs Smart Home software protocol will let other companies connect their products as well.

The Home View feature lets you peek in on your house when youre away, thanks to cameras built in to your appliances. (As long as youre comfortable buying appliances that can see as good as they look.)

The Smart Customer Service is a way for your devices to let you know when they need repair or more consumable supplieshopefully itll be more reliable than those low-ink warnings your printer sends when there is clearly plenty of ink left.

Samsungs announcement didnt include a full list of compatible productsor pricesalthough the company says it eventually plans to cover home energy, home security, and healthcare products through partnerships with other companies. More details are hopefully coming at Samsungs press conference on Monday; well keep you posted.
