    Raising Your Home's I-Q - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Jessa Goddard Thursday February 27, 2014 3:46 PM UPDATED: Thursday February 27, 2014 3:56 PM COLUMBUS, Ohio -

The "Smart Home" is the latest in home security and management. It is now on display at the Columbus Dispatch Home and Garden Show.

The Smart House gives a whole new meaning to the flip of a switch.

By using a computer, tablet or smartphone, one can remotely access and control virtually every inch of the 900 square feet house.

Lowes Assistant Store Manager, Kevin Verbryke, said, So everything communicates with the centralized hub, which we have located up here on top of this bookcase. That's essentially the brain for the whole home.

The home features a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and entertainment area. These rooms were constructed and are on display inside the Ohio Expo Center.

Things such as adjusting the thermostat, turning on the fireplace, or turning down the blinds are all controlled using Lowe's exclusive new "Iris" system.

Verbryke went on to explain, They want to have the convenience of being able to monitor their homes and get alerts as to what's happening in their home, while they're not there.

The house allows its owner to virtually check on family members and pets in real time, using one of three kits: safe and secure, comfort and control or the smart kit, which ranges in price from $179 to $299 dollars.

Verbryke described the smart kit, It's very simple to set up. It's all wireless; it runs through your Wi-Fi network within your home. You set it up with a laptop or MacBook something like that, and it's actually quite simple just to pare all the devices to your hub.

Global Security Experts, Inc. Issues Consumer Alert Against Counterfeit OnGARD SMART Dummy Cameras - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (PRWEB) February 26, 2014

Global Security Experts, Inc. has released an alert today warning consumers against counterfeit versions of the OnGARD SMART dummy camera system that have been appearing online and in domestic markets recently. It appears that the counterfeit cameras originate from China, and are missing several defining features that are present in the actual OnGARD Home Security Products line. The OnGARD SMART Dummy Camera is manufactured to look exactly like the far more expensive cameras used to monitor expensive residences and corporate facilities.

Recently a line of counterfeit cameras attempting to imitate the OnGARD SMART Dummy camera have begun to pop up in the Global marketplace, said Jordan Frankel, founder of Global Security Experts, Inc. These counterfeits are vastly inferior to the OnGARD in both quality and construction, and are missing nearly all of the defining features that set the OnGARD apart as a premium security device.

As part of the consumer alert, the security team at Global Security Experts has released a Comparison Competitor Chart that highlights the differences between the genuine OnGARD and their counterfeit Chinese counterparts. The comparison competitor chart demonstrates that the OnGARD SMART dummy camera contains a litany of premium features, many of which are not found on counterfeit cameras, including ABS impact resistant plastic, stainless steel screws, a ultra-violet sun inhibitor, as well as a water resistant and gasket-ed design. The OnGARD SMART dummy camera also features an over-sized solar charging panel, comes standard with sun-driven rechargeable batteries, an over-sized - all angle-visible led flashing bulb, and twin rotating dummy antennas. The counterfeit cameras have none of the aforementioned features.

The counterfeit cameras are also missing the OnGARDs rust-free stainless steel battery connections and the Hide-A-Key feature, which allows users to conceal a spare house-key within the body of the OnGARD smart dummy camera.

Another thing consumers should look out for that is often a hallmark of counterfeit merchandise is a drastically reduced price, said Frankel. If you see what looks like an OnGARD, and the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. You will pay more for the genuine article, but you will be paying for quality and peace of mind.

Genuine OnGARD SMART dummy cameras retail from $39.99. For more information, visit globalsecurityexperts.com.

Homeland Security raids home owned by Rep. Linda Stewart - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Caroline Rowland, Reporter Last Updated: Wednesday, February 26, 2014, 10:39 PM ORANGE COUNTY --

Agents from Homeland Security and the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation raided a home owned by Florida state Rep. Linda Stewart, D -District 47, and her husband in southeast Orange County.

The agents searched the home for nearly three hours on the 4900 block of Barcelona Street. News 13 has learned Stewart's daughter has been living in the home.

One person, Darrell Roby, was arrested after federal and local agents raided the home.

Roby is charged with possession of an illegal weapon. He made his first appearance in federal court Wednesday afternoon.

Prosecutors said another gun and drugs were also found in the home.

Roby has a long criminal record. He's been arrested 27 prior times and was due to report to the Department of Corrections next week for a 23-month prison sentence.

Stewart, in a live interview on News 13 at noon, said she had been trying to evict who she called "squatters" from the home.

"I am very thrilled that they have gone in and removed these squatters," said Stewart.

She explained she rented the home to four individuals. However, at the time of the raid, only two were the original renters. She said she posted an eviction notice on the home on Feb. 13, 2014. But she said they were not going to leave and they were not paying rent.

Swan dive! Avoid this overpriced security camera kit - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Promising to make advanced home security easier and more accessible, Swann Security is introducing SwannSecure, a new wireless IP camera kit due in retail outlets this April.

Based in Australia, Swann has been manufacturing cameras and security devices for over 25 years. It was just last year, though, that they launched SwannLink, a peer-to-peer network designed to help consumers connect their security systems with devices like phones and tablets via the internet. The SwannSecure kit is the latest offering to fall in line with that initiative, consisting of an indoor/outdoor, Wi-Fi ready camera that you'll be able to monitor from your Android or iOS device, as well as from a separate 7-inch touchscreen interface. Each camera features a built-in microphone, as well as motion-triggered video recording.

All of that sounds great -- until you get a load of the price. The camera and touch screen together cost $379, which is more than what you'll pay for well-reviewed competitors like Piper and Dropcam Pro, as well as exciting, yet-to-be-released options like Samsung SmartCam HD and Canary.

    Meet Swann's ugly duckling.

Of course, the SwannSecure camera only costs $139 if you buy it on its own. So why not just ditch the touch screen? After all, at 1024 x 600 pixels (less than half the resolution of an iPad Mini), and with no other real functionality beyond playback, it hardly seems worth the $240 it tacks onto SwannSecure's price. For consumers who already own an Android or iOS device capable of viewing their live feeds and recorded footage, it'd be a near-complete redundancy.

Unfortunately, you don't have a choice. The touch screen is mandatory -- you can't use these cameras without it.

Pricing qualms aside, SwannSecure cameras (model NVW-470) seem to fall short when it comes to image quality, as well. The new cameras will feature a 1MP CMOS sensor, an IR cut filter for night vision, a glass lens, and a resolution of 720p. That resolution is good enough to bear the HD label, but not as impressive as Piper or Dropcam Pro, both of which offer resolutions of 1080p. SwannSecure also gets bested when it comes to viewing angle, with a 65 degree lens that falls short of the Dropcam Pro's 130 degrees, and shorter still of Piper's 180 degrees.

Another factor separating the three is the cost of storing and viewing recorded video, and here's where SwannSecure might look tempting to the truly fee-averse. SwannSecure cameras will save video to a mini SD card that you'll pay nothing to access (storage size starts at 8 GB -- you can upgrade as high as 64 GB). Dropcam will let you view your live feed for free, but you'll need to pay a monthly fee in order to save continuous video to the cloud for DVR-style viewing at a later date. Piper will automatically record 25-second video snippets whenever it detects something amiss, and you'll be able to play those back for free in addition to viewing the live feed. Like Dropcam, though, Piper will soon offer a fee-based continuous storage option for longer spans of video coverage.

This local storage strategy might help explain the SwannSecure's lower resolution, as Swann is likely aiming for the sweet spot: high enough to claim HD-quality, but low enough that you'll be able to fit plenty of footage on that micro SD card. It's a strategy that we're also seeing from Samsung with the newly announced SmartCam HD, due out in March.

With motion detection and video playback, Swann's cameras aren't quite as comprehensive as an option like Piper or Canary, which both track environmental factors like temperature, humidity, and noise levels in addition to recording video. They also won't integrate into a larger network of motion detectors, open/close sensors, and other security peripherals. For a camera-based system like that, you'll want to look into iSmartAlarm, Oplink Security, or Viper Home.

Home Security Systems: What To Look For - February 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

When it comes to protecting your home, family, and belongings, one of your best options is a home security system. While it may seem like all home security systems are alike, this is not the case. You have a variety of options when it comes to home security and knowing what you want out of the service will help you choose the right company.

Cost is a major concern for most people who are considering a home security system. The first thing you should consider is the installation cost. Some companies offer free installation and others charge for it. Be careful when choosing a company that offers free installation, as they may make up for it on equipment rental fees that appear on your bill every month. Companies that charge a one time installation fee and ask you to buy the equipment may actually be offering a better deal in the long run.

Another option to consider is the amount of security you want or need. Most home security system come with a few yard signs, window alarms, one or two control panels and door locks. There are numerous add-on options that many companies are happy to include for additional costs. You can opt for video monitoring, more window alarms or door locks, virtual controls, and even more window stickers and signs. If you are concerned about the amount of security offered in the basic service package, dont be afraid to ask for more.

When you are choosing the best home security system, keep in mind that you may want to choose one with built in fire and carbon monoxide monitoring. Not only will your alarms alert you if there is a fire or carbon monoxide in your home, but the security system will also notify the fire department.

Installing a home security system in your home can help protect your family and your home and help you feel better when you are away from them both. It can also lower your home insurance rates. Remember that you have a variety of options in terms of systems and services. Be sure to choose wisely.

Home Security Systems Have Incredible Uses - February 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    YouTube Videos Tweets Comments

The value of a home security system cannot be emphasized enough. But did you know that there are several other benefits this device holds in store for you? From acting as a thermostat to being a surveillance system for your baby, a home security system has myriad uses.

Why, it can even decide whether to allow someone into the residence or not. The tons of apps that are currently available for these functions include motion detecting devices and door and window sensing contraptions.

Among the long list of benefits is a reduction in your utility bills. Via the use of sensors the system can turn off unnecessary lights thereby saving on electricity. Suppose you are going somewhere and you forgot to switch off the air conditioner or heater. The security system can easily do that for you at the click of a button.

A home security system can allow you to cut the costs on home insurance. The company that insures your home environment will surely lower its premium by 15% to 20% once you let its representatives know that you own a super-safety system. The police and fire department will be available at all times so there will be need for worry.

A smoke detector alarm will allow for instant contact with the fire department. And as far as children and their wayward ways are concerned, the system saves on the fees of a babysitter. The system can monitor the whereabouts of your child. Where he or she is at home will get relayed to the parents wherever they may be.

Whether it is teenagers or toddlers, a home security system saves on the use of third party agents to take care of your kids. You will be further notified regarding a leaky faucet or (un)locked door which needs attention. Even old people who need some help in their day to day tasks will find this mechanism a boon in their lives.
