Students rise up against forced remote spy app usage in colleges, universities – ZDNet - September 28, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt the education system, students are fighting back against the remote methods employed by some colleges to keep an eye on their activities during assessments.

Due to stay-at-home and lockdown orders, teachers and students worldwide were required to pivot to remote learning systems and platforms. Without warning, teachers found themselves trying to engage pupils over Zoom; online libraries and research platforms replaced traditional, brick-and-mortar buildings, and the parents of younger students found themselves balancing work from home and entertaining their kids.

For many governments, now, keeping kids in school is a top priority -- not only for their education but also to free up parents to go back to work.

See also:Students, university clash over forced installation of remote exam monitoring software on home PCs

As college and university students head to campus to start their new term, at the same time the cold and flu season is beginning, COVID-19 outbreaks are also occurring.

Despite social distancing efforts, thousands of confirmed and suspected cases at US campuses have prompted local lockdowns and students are being told to self-isolate.

In the UK, mere days after welcoming a new wave of students, 32 universities recorded positive cases, including the University of Kent at Canterbury, the University of Glasgow, and Manchester Metropolitan University. In the latter case, students have called imposed lockdowns a form of "false imprisonment."

The escalating situation may see many students -- whether or not they are in college accommodation -- return to online-only teaching. However, this has now become a minefield for privacy.

Back in August, ZDNet reported protests organized by Australian National University (ANU) students for the enforced download of Proctorio, a remote monitoring tool, on personal devices.

Proctorio is a "secure remote exam" solution for invigilating exams remotely, including features such as microphone and camera monitoring, as well as eye-tracking to flag any behavior deemed suspicious.

ANU students consider Proctorio an affront to their personal privacy -- and one that "crosses the line" as the software was loaded on home PCs, rather than electronics belonging to the university and provided to exam takers.

This form of activism against surveillance and exam monitoring tools -- also known as proctoring software -- adopted by colleges is taking shape worldwide, and it is one that academic institutions should watch closely.

An investigation into student activity in this arena, conducted by digital rights group the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), has found dozens of similar petitions and protests.

CNET:The best DIY home security system for 2020

Across the globe, students are rising up against the forced use of proctoring software; not only Proctorio but also other variations such as Honorlock and ProctorU. Some of the most noteworthy petitions are below:

Change.org reveals other petitions worldwide, ranging from colleges in Sri Lanka to the UK, Canada, and Italy.

Schools, colleges, and universities are in an unenviable position. They have been thrust into a world when they are responsible for pupil education but need to rely on remote technology to do so -- and they must also work out ways to monitor assessments and exams fairly to reduce the risk of cheating.

However, with disruption unlikely to end for the educational sector any time soon, educational and social policy should not disregard an individuals' right to privacy -- and it should not become a common and accepted fact of life to have remote surveillance tools installed on personal devices in order to have an academic career.

Security concerns must be addressed, proctoring software needs to be transparent and their use temporary, and the issue of spyware as a forced install on devices that belong to students, rather than educational institutes, needs to be addressed -- and quickly.

TechRepublic:SpyCloud and CyberDefenses join forces on election security effort

"While almost all the petitions we've seen raise very real privacy concerns -- from biometric data collection to the often overbroad permissions these apps require over the students' devices, to the surveillance of students' personal environments -- these petitions make clear that proctoring apps also raise concerns about security, equity, accessibility, cost, increased stress, and bias in the technology," the EFF says.

ZDNet has reached out to the proctoring software providers mentioned and will update when we hear back.

Blink Indoor Review: Can’t Handle the Great Indoors – Digital Trends - September 28, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Despite its name, the Blink Indoor just doesn't cut it to handle the inside of the home.

Earlier this year, security camera maker Blink released the Blink Mini to expand its portfolio. Its certainly a step in a new direction, since it was the first indoor camera from the company after the success of its line of Blink XT outdoor cameras.

Now were getting yet another indoor camera, aptly named the Blink Indoor, which looks a lot like its sibling the Blink Outdoor. Compared to the Mini, the Blink Indoor boasts a higher $80 price tag, and is billed as a wireless solution. Are you willing to pay the premium when the Blink Mini sells for $35?

Place the Blink Indoor and Blink Outdoor cameras next to one another, and its tough to distinguish them apart from one another. From their squarish plastic design, to how theyre powered by two AA lithium batteries, they share many similarities. The only difference, though, is how the rear cover of the Blink Indoor doesnt have the same weather-resistant covering. And, oh yeah, the Indoor is available in white, while the Outdoor is in black. You could use the Blink Outdoor camera indoors if you wanted, but you cant use the Indoor outside, since its not weather-resistant.

On the specs side, its exactly like the Blink Outdoor, which in itself is similar to the previous Blink XT2 cam. It features 1080p video capture, up to 30 frames-per-second capture, infrared night vision, and the same 110-degree field of view. The narrow field of view is still limiting compared to the Ring Indoor Cams 140-degree range for example, but if you intend on monitoring entryways in the home, it suffices by capturing the important stuff.

Given that it shares the same specs at the Blink Outdoor, its performance is no different. The 1080p video it produces is passable, with enough clarity to make out scenes, but fine details are tough to discern. It suffers with its dynamic range, often blowing out the highlights. Night vision holds up with its range of about 25 feet, but it tends to be on the softer side.

Due to its battery power, the Blink Indoor has a fairly short live view when accessing the camera directly from the app and thats a problem. When you access the live view, youre given a smidgen over 30 seconds before the connection cuts. I thought there would be an option to adjust it, but there isnt one. Once it nears that 30 second mark, a button pops up on-screen asking if you want to continue. Sure, you could press it after each 30-second mark, but thats a pain.

Interestingly enough, you can actually hardwire the Blink Indoor to a power source, since theres an exposed microUSB port on the back. Even with the constant power supply, though, the live view is still limited to about 30 seconds. Besides that, there are controls for its motion detection sensitivity, as well as the ability to set up motion zones to reduce false alerts. Speaking of that, it lacks the advanced detection of its peers, like person or pet detection, that help to reduce false alerts.

As Ive mentioned earlier, the Blink Mini was released earlier this year as the companys first indoor camera solution. The Blink Indoor, though, acts more like an outdoor camera than an indoor one, especially when it includes the same wall mount found with the Blink Outdoor. Due to that, you wont be able to articulate it for different vantage points if you decide to place it on a table or countertop.

Lets talk about battery life. Its neat the battery can last up to two years, but the app does a terrible job indicating its remaining battery life. Instead of a percentage or bar, it only gives a vague OK in the app after nearly a weeks worth of use. Of course, battery life will be impacted mostly by how frequently its triggered. There is an option to wire it to a power source, but its aggravating that no wire is offered in the box.

Theres only a $20 difference between the Blink Outdoor and Indoor, with the main difference being the weather-resistant construction of the former. With its $80 price, the Blink Indoor makes for a hard sell given the limitations of streaming video in real time and how it lacks the advanced features of its contemporaries.

The all-plastic construction makes it lightweight, but it still feels solidly constructed to withstand minor drops. If theres a defect, youll have a 1-year limited warranty to cover it.

While its video quality is no different, the cheaper Blink Mini is a better buy given its $35 cost. Youre certainly saving the money, while also not having to worry about any live-streaming limitations.

Alternatively, the Eufy Indoor Cam 2K Pan and Tilt is an excellent offering. With tons of features including 360-degree coverage. The Ring Indoor Cam is also a solid choice at $60. It offers person detection to reduce false alerts, as well as integration with the Ring ecosystem.

No. It lacks the necessities to make it a viable indoor camera, and its more expensive than much more capable peers.

Revealed: How home router manufacturers dropped the ball on security – TechHive - July 8, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Security vulnerabilities in your home router have been the story for years, with the responsibility being placed at the feet of users to keep their router firmware updated. But a damning report by Fraunhofer says that router manufacturers themselves have taken years to issue patches, with potentially dozens of critical vulnerabilities lurking within older routers.

The June report by Fraunhofer-Institut fur Kommunikation (FKIE) extracted firmware images from routers made by Asus, AVM, D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, TP-Link, and Zyxel127 in all. The report (as noted by ZDNet) compared the firmware images to known vulnerabilities and exploit mitigation techniques, so that even if a vulnerability was exposed, the design of the router could mitigate it.

No matter how you slice it, Fraunhofers study pointed out basic lapses in security across several aspects. At the most basic level, 46 routers didnt receive any updatesat all in the last year. Many used outdated Linux kernels with their own, known vulnerabilities. Fifty routers used hard-coded credentials, where a known username and password was encoded into the router as a default credential that asked the user to change itbut would still be there, accessible, if they did not.

FKIE could not find a single router without flaws. Nor could the institute name a single router vendor that avoided the security issues.

AVM does [a] better job than the other vendors regarding most aspects, the report concluded. Asus and Netgear do a better job in some aspects than D-Link, Linksys, TP-Link, and Zyxel. We contactedBelkin (Linksys) and D-Link, two vendors named in the report, for comment, but didnt hear back by press time.

In conclusion the update policy of router vendors is far behind the standards as we know it from desktop or server operating systems, FKIE said elsewhere in the report. However, routers are exposed to the internet 24 hours a day leading to an even higher risk of malware infection.

Fraunhofer broke down how router vendors have fallen short into several categories.

Days since the last firmware release:Although 81 routers were updated in the last 365 days before the FKIE gathered its results (March 27, 2019 to Match 27, 2020) the average number of days to the prior update, across all devices, was 378. FKIE said 27 of the devices had not been updated within two years, with the absolute worst stretching to 1,969 daysmore then five years.

Asus, AVM, and Netgear issued updates for all of their devices within a year and a half, at least. By comparison, most antivirus programs issue updates at least daily.

Age of the OS: Most routers run Linux, an open-source software model that offers researchers the ability to examine the basic Linux kernel code and apply patches. When the kernel itself is outdated, however, fundamental known vulnerabilities in the OS are ripe for exploitation. FKIE used the open-source Firmware Analysis and Comparison Tool (FACT) to extract the router firmware, finding that a third of the routers ran on top of the 2.6.36 Linux kernel, an older version. Thelast security update for kernel version 2.6.36 was provided nine years ago, the study found.

Critical vulnerabilities in the tested routers abounded. Theaverage number of critical vulnerabilities found for each router was 53, with even the best routers subject to 21 critical vulnerabilities (there were a whopping 348 high-rated vulnerabilities, too).

Exploit mitigation: Routers can be built to protect their kernel using a variety of exploit mitigation techniques, including the non-executable bit (NX) to mark a region of memory as non-executable. This was a common way of protecting the router, but FKIE found that the usage of exploit mitigation techniques was rare.

Private keys: We want to make it absolutely clear that there is no good reason to publish a private key, because a published private key does not provide any security at all! FKIE wrote. Publishing the private cryptographic key in the firmware allows an attacker to impersonate the device itself and do man in the middle attacks, an exploit that tries to fool the users PC and the server into believing that the attacker is the trusted router.

FKIE found that at least five private keys are published per firmware image. The Netgear R6800 provides a total number of 13 private keys in a single device. AVM was the only vendor FKIE found that did not publish private keys.

Hard-coded login credentials: You may already be familiar with hard-coded credentials: a router that uses admin and password as its default credentials. While that makes it easy to recover a lost password, it also makes it extremely easy for an attacker to take over your router. Furthermore, if the user cannot change a password, you might get a feeling that the password is related to a backdoor, FKIE wrote, implying that hard-coding credentials could have been added to allow monitoring of your device.

The good news is that more than 60% of the router firmware images do not have hard-coded login credentials, FKIE wrote. The bad news is that 50 routers do provide hard-coded credentials. Sixteen routers have well known or easy crackable credentials.

FKIEs report doesnt suggest choosing an open-source firmware replacement for your router, although that option is certainly available. Unfortunately, some of the firmware options are no longer maintained, or only work on a subset of (older) routers. Its disappointing that the easiest route for criminals to penetrate your home network appears to benot your PC, or your operating systembut the router youre using to connect to the rest of the world.

This story, "Revealed: How home router manufacturers dropped the ball on security" was originally published by PCWorld.

Connected Home Security Systems Market Growth By Manufacturers, Countries, Types And Application, End Users And Forecast To 2026 - 3rd Watch News

Home router warning: They’re riddled with known flaws and run ancient, unpatched Linux – ZDNet - July 8, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Communication (FKIE) has carried out a study involving 127 home routers from seven brands to check for the presence of known security vulnerabilities in the latest firmware. The results are appalling.

The FKIE study found that 46 routers hadn't got a single security update within the past year and that many routers are affected by hundreds of known vulnerabilities.

It also found that vendors are shipping firmware updates without fixing known vulnerabilities, meaning that even if a consumer installs the latest firmware from a vendor, the router would still be vulnerable.

FKIE assessed that ASUS and Netgear do a better job on some aspects of securing routers than D-Link, Linksys, TP-Link and Zyxel, but it argues the industry needs to do more to secure home routers.

FKIE found that AVM, a German router manufacturer, was the only vendor that didn't publish private cryptographic keys in its router firmware. The Netgear R6800 router contained 13 private keys.

In the worst cases of devices FKIE assessed, the routers hadn't been updated for more than five years.

About 90% of the routers in the study used a Linux operating system. However, manufacturers weren't updating the OS with fixes made available from Linux kernel maintainers.

"Linux works continuously to close security vulnerabilities in its operating system and to develop new functionalities. Really, all the manufacturers would have to do is install the latest software, but they do not integrate it to the extent that they could and should," said Johannes vom Dorp, a scientist at FKIE's Cyber Analysis & Defense department.

"Numerous routers have passwords that are either well known or simple to crack or else they have hard-coded credentials that users cannot change," he added.

The study targeted five key signals in firmware images to assess each manufacturer's approach to cybersecurity. These included the days since the last firmware update was released; how old are the OS versions running these routers; the use of exploit mitigation techniques; whether private cryptographic key material isn't private; and the presence of hard-coded login credentials.

FKIE concludes that router makers are significantly lagging in the delivery of security updates compared with operating system makers.

"The update policy of router vendors is far behind the standards as we know it from desktop or server operating systems," FKIE notes in the report.

"Most of the devices are powered by Linux and security patches for Linux kernel and other open-source software are released several times a year. This means the vendors could distribute security patches to their devices far more often, but they do not."

The results mirror findings from a 2018 US study by American Consumer Institute (ACI), which analyzed 186 small office/home office Wi-Fi routers from 14 different vendors. It found 155, 83%, of the firmware sampled had vulnerabilities to potential cyberattacks, and that each router had an average of 172 vulnerabilities.

ACI criticized router makers for not providing an auto-update mechanism to keep routers updated. Often updates are only made after high-profile attacks on routers, such as Mirai IoT malware, and the state-sponsored VPNFilter malware.

As for exploit mitigation, a researcher who recently found 79 Netgear router models had a remotely exploitable flaw also found that its web-based administration panel never applies the exploit mitigation technique ASLR (address space layout randomization), lowering the bar for remote attackers to take over an affected router.

The German study found that more than a third of the devices use a kernel version 2.6.36 or older, with the latest security update for 2.6.36 provided in February 2011. It also found a Linksys WRT54GL router running on Linux kernel version 2.4.20, which was released in 2002.

"The worst case regarding high-severity CVEs is the Linksys WRT54GL powered by the oldest kernel found in our study," the report notes. "There are 579 high-severity CVEs affecting this product."
