(CNN) -- For Airbnb hosts who want to keep tabs on their homes, a full home security system might be overkill. They're expensive, and live cameras and motion detectors invade guests' privacy. So how do they make sure guests keep the volume down, aren't smoking inside and don't ransack their home?

A new device called Point combines microphones with environmental sensors to detect anything out of the ordinary in your home while you are away. A broken window while you're at work, the sound of your teenagers throwing a raging party, Grandad sneaking an unauthorized after-dinner cigar.

"They want to have peace of mind and know that everything is fine, but they don't want or need full security systems," said Nils Mattisson, co-founder of Form Devices, the start-up that makes Point.

Small, round and plastic, Point looks like a traditional smoke alarm crossed with a speaker. Sounds are matched with data from the other sensors to figure out what might have happened -- a loud crash followed by a drop in temperature might mean a window was broken. It hears when an existing smoke detector goes off and sends an alert, though it's not certified as an official smoke detector on its own.

It has a microphone that can detect sounds outside that the human ear could pick up. Environmental sensors pick up temperature; the particle sensor can tell what's in the air.

When Point detects any notable changes, it sends an alert to the owner's smartphone. The mobile app also shows a timeline of all events, so someone can quickly scroll through the day to see when people were in the home. All the computation takes place on the device; there is no live-streaming audio, no way to eavesdrop on your home and no overwhelming amount of data to sort through.

Mattisson worked in the Exploratory Design Group at Apple for seven years, where he helped build prototypes for early, experimental product ideas. He left the company last year to start Form with co-founders Marcus Ljungblad, Fredrik Ahlberg and Martin Lf.

The security gadget that's always listening

FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) Home security companies are having trouble keeping up with demand because of the fear generated by events surrounding Ferguson. People at ABF Security Systems in Fenton are working weekends and after hours to install home and commercial systems as quickly as possible. David Denton is a company spokesman, Commercial business has exploded on our business.

One salesman said business has doubled in the past two weeks. The security systems are not only being installed in Ferguson but across the area from Troy, Missouri to Swansea, Illinois, much of the business is the result of what happened in the north county community and what may occur after the grand jury decision.

Addie Posley has a home security system. She said, If thats what makes them feel safer I think its a wise decision to do that to protect their home.

Mike Gassmann also has his home protected with a security system, I think a lot of people might be over reacting a little bit I like to think the positive and maybe people are going a little too crazy but I understand its a big deal.

Denton added, Were installing a lot of cameras right now our camera sales have never been better most of the time theyre putting them on the outside of the building to monitor whats going on outside the building.

He said businesses want to catch any looters on surveillance cameras.

Theres a waiting list of two to three weeks for a permanent installation however they can install a temporary system in less than an hour. Denton said, Ive never seen anything like this. This is usually a slow time of year for security companies but not now.

Security companies busy protecting home from possible unrest in Ferguson

The holidays are fast approaching, and for many it's a time to spend with family and not to mention Christmas shopping. But what about safety? The holidays can also be high time for home break-ins and home invasions.

According to home security company, Safe Guard the World, the most recent national statistics show that over 2.5 million home intrusions happen each year. every 13 second, including armed robberies.

The good news is that here in Mississippi the number of robberies have been dropping steadily.

FBI stats over the last five years show 2,965 total robberies for the state back in 2009, which dropped significantly in 2013 to 2409, despite a slight uptick from the previous year. Also within the past five years, Jackson saw its highest numbers in 2010 with 1,086 robberies, which had dropped to 845 in 2013.

To help the trend maintain momentum, law enforcement says being safe and secure is key.

Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance says, Each homeowner should do an assessment. Take a look at windows, doors, ceilings and make sure that all those areas that are usually points of entry are secure.

There are a number of ways to ensure your safety. Perhaps the most common would be to install a security alarm. You can also install a security door like the ones made at Mississippi Ironworks. I spoke to President and Owner Cary Crawley, who broke down some of the safety features his doors have to offer, like this one that has category 4 hurricane proof glass attached to it to allow homeowners protection when someone comes knocking. Crawley says A lot of our families are retired and they're more trusting, and if a stranger does come by, this permits them to open up, be gracious and at the same time, remain secure.

Another effective, but rarely thought of line of defense is protective window screens.

Mississippi Iron Works also specializes in the heavy duty screens, designed to keep criminals at bay. Crawley explains how they work, saying, If you take a knife to this material, you're not going to be able to cut it without getting cutting torches and specialized equipment... that's going to take a lot of time. This is going to be the way to go.

These are great preventative measures, but if someone actually gets inside your home, you may consider arming yourself.
