BAKERSFIELD, CA.-A home on Colgate Avenue in East Bakersfield is for sale, but this is no ordinary listing. Money from that home sale will help save women who are sold for sex.
Magdalene Hope is a local non-profit that helps victims of sex trafficking. Dedicated volunteer Susie Tors would walk up and down Union Avenue reaching out to potential victims. She also worked at the Magdalene Hope safe house.
"She just had a heart for the ladies," said Doug Bennett, Founder & President of Magdalene Hope. "She wanted to see women set free."
So when she passed away from stomach pains in 2013, her family came up with an idea to keep her passion alive.
"Her mother approached me and said you know we'd like to give you the home once the mortgage is paid and the back money is paid on the house," said Bennett. "We feel that Suzie would want to give to the organization even after she was gone."
The four bedroom home has two bathrooms and two backyard spaces, plus two living areas.
"It has 2,006 square feet, built in 1962," said realtor Katrina Blakemore. "Good features, great neighborhood, beautiful street, lots of trees."
Just like the women served by Magdalene Hope, the house needed a little love.
"Needed some love, needed a little bit of restoration, and needed a second chance," said Bennett.
So $23,000 dollars went into kitchen, electrical and carpet renovations. But the yellow bathroom kept its color because it was Suzie's favorite.

When Leitha Sackmann first walked into the abandoned white and green house on South Detroit Avenue, the walls in the bathroom had gaping holes from vandals who had stripped the copper plumbing.
The 60-year-old house is adjacent to the home that Mrs. Sackmann and her husband, Richard, have lived in for more than 30 years.
With its moldy walls and ceilings, the three-bedroom house was clearly a fixer-upper, but sat among homes valued at more than $40,000.
The structure was among tax-foreclosed properties acquired last year by the Lucas County Land Bank, which in turn sold it for $5,000 to the Sackmanns after they offered a detailed proposal to renovate it.
Today, the couple are nearing the end of a $25,000 renovation that includes a new furnace and plumbing, mold removal, kitchen cabinets, and appliances.
Launched four years ago and formally known as the Lucas County Land Reutilization Corp., the land bank has gained the reputation as the agency that demolishes vacant and abandoned homes and buildings, and which sells the plots where the structures stood to neighbors and community groups.
However, the land bank also shores up vacant and abandoned houses to offer for sale so private money can be invested to fix up the property and return it to the tax rolls.
So far, 178 fixer-uppers acquired by the land bank have been sold and renovated by new owners.

As Tucson celebrates the 90th anniversary of its rodeo, plans are afoot to demolish the home of Frederick Leighton Kramer, the polo enthusiast who dreamed up the notion of La Fiesta de los Vaqueros with a few of his horse-riding buddies in 1925.
Kramers home, built in 1924, was situated on a large plot just north of where Isabella Greenway would build the Arizona Inn in 1930.
The first rodeo was held on a polo field near Kramers home.
The house, a two-story marvel with green porcelain roofing tiles, was easily the largest and most pretentious of Tucsons private residences, according to a 1925 Tucson Citizen story unearthed by John Warnock, a University of Arizona English professor who lives nearby.
Kramer died of tuberculosis in 1940.
In the 1940s, the house, dubbed Rancho Santa Catalina by Kramer, became the Potter School for Girls. Most of the acreage attached to it became the Catalina Vista development, a conclave of single-story, ranch-style homes with large lots on winding tree-lined streets.
Today, Catalina Vista, north of East Elm Street between North Campbell Avenue and North Tucson Boulevard, is a National Historic Neighborhood, although the Kramer/Potter house itself is not listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The house and its adjacent buildings would later become a convent and school for the Sisters of Charity. It was sold to John Greenway, then owner of the Arizona Inn, in 1971.
For a while, it was a residential compound and studios for graduate art students from the UA.
It has been fenced and boarded up since 2006. The owners of the Arizona Inn have signed a contract to sell it and its 3-acre parcel to a group of local developers.
