Middletown voters resoundingly approved spending $32.9 million to upgrade roofs and repair heating and cooling systems at township schools, according to unofficial results from the Monmouth County Board of Elections.
Nearly 3,000 of the 4,109 votes cast in the March 11 special election were in favor of the project, which will bring improvements to 15 of the public school district's 17 schools over the next two years.
The referendum came after weeks of public outreach by Middletown Board of Education officials, who sought to take advantage of $19 million in available state grants by beginning work this summer.
The project will bring new roofs to Bayview, Fairview, Leonardo, Lincroft, New Monmouth, River Plaza and Navesink elementary schools, and partially replace the roofs at Middletown Village, Nut Swamp and Ocean Avenue elementary schools. Bayshore Middle Schools roof will also be completely replaced, while the roofs at Thorne and Thompson middle schools and both high schools would be partially replaced.
The work will also include heating and cooling enhancements at all three middle schools and both high schools.

Gold Medal Service, an award-winning heating, cooling, plumbing, electrical, and drain service company in New Jersey, advises area homeowners to take advantage of national Fix a Leak Week activities, sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its partner, WaterSense.
This years Fix a Leak Week runs from March 17-23 and the theme is Chasing Leaks. WaterSense and the EPA encourage people nationwide to participate in community runs and other activities to educate themselves about chasing down leaks and how to stop wasting water.
People can save tens of thousands of gallons of water a year by taking care of leaks they may not even know they have in their home, said Mike Agugliaro, Gold Medal Service co-founder. Its good for the environment to save water, and its also good for the local economy and your own pocketbook.
Checking plumbing and irrigation systems and correcting any leaks can save homeowners as much as 10,000 gallons of water per year, roughly the capacity of a backyard swimming pool, or the amount needed to wash 270 loads of laundry.
WaterSense encourages homeowners to follow a three-step process:
The safest thing to do if New Jersey homeowners detect a leak in their home is to call the plumbing experts at Gold Medal Services to repair or replace any faulty pipes or other parts.
Our technicians are experts at detecting and repairing any leaks that spring up, said Agugliaro, so its essential that homeowners in our service areas get a full check to prevent any burst pipes or other plumbing disasters.
About Gold Medal Service Gold Medal Service, rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau, was founded in New Jersey in 1994 with just two employees. Their vision was to provide homeowners with a reliable and trustworthy home service company customers could count on to fix just about anything that could go wrong in a home. Dusty Simmons works on a vehicle at Capitol City Chrysler. Simmons attended Nichols Career Center and Linn State Technical College for auto mechanics. He worked part time at the dealership and is now a full-time certified mechanic.
More students are taking a second look at automotive repair, a high-tech career that is always in demand and cant be outsourced overseas.
For many, the first rung on the ladder is an education at Nichols Career Center, which has trained hundreds of students over the years and placed dozens in jobs at car dealerships and independent repair shops all over Jefferson City.
Dusty Simmons, 21, attended Nichols Career Center before graduating from Linn State Technical College in 2012. He grew up with a wrench in his hand, and by the age of 14 was restoring his first truck with the help of his dad.
That started it all. My dad was a mechanic in the National Guard, he said. We were always tinkering on something.
Today, he works at Capitol Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Missouri Boulevard. He started as a part-time worker changing oil and shadowing the more-experienced employees. When he graduated, he became a full-time employee and enrolled in Chrysler school, a series of classes that teach technicians how to repair Chrysler products.
Russell Richter, the dealerships fixed-operations director, said his people have to attend 128 classes to be considered master certified.
Although some do enter the field with the know-how they learned fixing cars in the front drive, if you want advancement, a credential from a school like Linn State is essential, Richter said.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay for automotive service technicians and mechanics was $36,610 in 2012. Recent starting salaries for Linn State students were $25,438 on average, with a high of $41,600, according to a 180-day follow up report issued by the college. Experienced technicians can make upwards of $60,000.
Both Richter and Simmons said openings in the field are available, demand for skilled mechanics is high and the job pays a living wage.

FULTON - The Fulton State Hospital, which has been open since 1851, is in dire need of repair. According to a Department of Mental Health report in 2013, it is the oldest state psychiatric facility west of the Mississippi River. The hospital generates more than $52.4 million in Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH), Medicare, and other 3rd party sources. The conflict over the budget has been a large issue for the past few weeks and citizens in Callaway County are worried that if the budget to repair the hospital does not come through, a substantial amount of money will be lost to mid-Missouri.
Fulton mayor Leroy Benton said he hopes that legislators will be able to figure out the budget soon.
"The need is there," Benton said. "We tend to look at the economic impact and of course the city of Fulton is very concerned about that, it's our largest employer in the Callaway County area."
The Fulton State Hospital employs 1,228 employees, including full and part-time staff members.
"It also employs folks from the surrounding communities, Columbia, Jeff City, all of central Missouri actually," Benton said. "It's a very important piece to central Missouri's economic health."
The upcoming construction would generate a substantial amount of revenue that would help boost Callaway County's economy.
"The sheer fact of the construction itself, $211 million dollars infused into the central Missouri economy will be a very good generator. That should help our economic climate throughout," Benton said.
President of the Callaway County Chamber of Commerce Matt Gowin said in the immediate time frame, during construction, the Department of Economic Development "..has estimated approximately 2500 new jobs in conjunction with the construction of this new facility, about 1400 in direct construction jobs, and 1000 along the supply chain."
According to the Department of Mental Health's report, the proposal for the renovation is to build a new maximum and intermediate security complex to house 300 psychiatric patients, replacing the central boiler plant to handle more advanced heating and cooling needs, and demolishing any old and decrepit building that are no longer needed.

Garland, TX (PRWEB) March 06, 2014
Its that time of year for sitting back in the easy chair, watching some March Madness basketball and drinking green beer. The coldest weather is in the past and the first day of spring will soon be here, which also means there are stuff that need to get done around the house before the hot weather gets here. Spring cleaning and maintenance need to be completed soon around the home.
In Texas, the most important maintenance of all is on the air conditioning system. Homeowners dont want to start a hot Texas summer with a broken air conditioner or one that is not working to its highest level of cooling. Arctic Comfort Heating and Air Conditioning urges homeowners to get their air conditioner checked, but when is the best time?
Arctic Comfort Heating and Air Conditioning believes the best time to have an AC system checked by a professional is when the outdoor temps are more than 70 degrees. The warmer the temp, the better for having the system checked. When the temperature is cooler than 70 degrees, the AC unit will not be working very hard and will not provide as accurate an evaluation as it would under warmer conditions.
There are many electrical components in the outdoor condensing unit. For the technicians safety, it cannot be raining or have rained recently. Water and electricity are a deadly mix.
In the meantime, while waiting on the ideal weather conditions for a summer air conditioning tune up, which usually begins in April, Arctic Comfort Heating and Air Conditioning has some tips to keep in mind for other spring maintenance chores. They suggest checking and changing air conditioning filters, as well as cleaning out gutters for proper drainage, checking the roof for any winter damage, getting the garden ready for spring seeding, having the lawn equipment serviced and ready for use, trimming dead limbs out of trees and shrubs, fertilizing the lawn and inspecting and caulking leaky windows and doors.
When its time to schedule an air conditioning tune up or replacement, give Arctic Comfort Air Conditioning and Heating a call any time, any day, at 972-530-8384.
About the company:
Since 1990, Arctic Comfort Air Conditioning and Heating has provided dependable air conditioning installation, air conditioning repair, heating repair, service, equipment and quality products to Garland and surrounding Dallas area home owners. Whether customers need new air conditioning and heating equipment or repair of existing heating and air conditioning systems, Arctic Comfort Air Conditioning and Heating meets the highest performance standards in the business, from employee training, to customer care.
