    - Carbon monoxide can cause serious health issues for people.

It reduces oxygen delivery to the body's organs and tissues and at extremely high levels, can cause death.

A phone call to a heating repair company likely saved the life of two Northwoods residents.

Frasier's Plumbing, Heating and Cooling hopes the experience will serve as a note of caution for other homeowners.

On Wednesday night Frasier's got call from a man with boiler issues.

The caller said something had been wrong for about three days.

"We're having problems with our heater. It's making really [weird] sounds, the house is dropping in temperature and both my wife and myself have extremely bad headaches. We're thinking we have a carbon monoxide leak," said the caller.

A woman inside the home was unconscious when a Frasier's service technician got there.

The tech called 911 and the couple was taken to an area hospital. The woman was later flown to Marshfield.

The Frasier's technician found extremely high levels of carbon monoxide both outside and inside the home.

Technicians Expect More Work When Temperatures Plummet - January 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    TULSA, Oklahoma -

With our low temperature hovering in the single digits, area plumbing and heating repair workers are overrun with calls.

Companies say cold days remind people to get things checked out - pipes or furnace filters - but sometimes people wake up shivering with no heat or head to the sink to find things aren't flowing as usual.

When it gets this cold, the work heats up for crews who fix broken pipes and sluggish furnaces; it's something they expect every year when the temperatures plummet.

The phones were busy, obviously with a lot of frozen pipes," said Mullin Plumbing CEO, Robert Morris.

Roughly 25 percent of the calls Mullin Plumbing is getting right now are for frozen pipes.

They said when colder weather is in the forecast, they start getting ready.

We try to make preparations the night before and make sure we've got all our equipment ready, and make sure all of our trucks are ready to go, and get the guys here and get them started early because we know it's going to be a long day," Morris said.

It's long day for Heating and Cooling companies too.

Long-time technician Dil Brandow was booked up, changing filters and fixing problems.

Negative wind-chill forecast prompts school delays - January 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Wind blows snow off the roof of a building Wednesday on Liberty Street in Chambersburg. Wind chill temperatures could dip into the double negative digits Thursday. (Markell DeLoatch Public Opinion)

FRANKLIN COUNTY >> Double-digit wind chill values will blow in Thursday and create what AccuWeather expects will be the coldest day of winter so far.

All of Pennsylvania, and most of the eastern half of the nation, is under a wind chill advisory for part of Thursday. In Franklin County and the surrounding region, the advisory extends through 3 p.m.

In this area, the coldest wind chills are expected late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, said Greg DeVoir, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in State College. Residents should prepare for wind chills dipping to 20 below zero at times, he said.

The cold morning forecast prompted Chambersburg, Waynesboro, Tuscarora and Shippensburg school districts to call two-hour delays for Thursday morning by early evening Wednesday.

The warmest part of the day will be 18 degrees with the wind chill making it -9 degrees, according to NWS.

The cause of the freeze is an arctic air mass which, combined with gusty winds, will produce lower temperatures the farther it reaches into the area, according to DeVoir.

As the digits drop, the danger they can cause increases.

The key to staying warm, and preventing hypothermia, is dressing in layers and ensuring skin is covered, according to NWS. Eat nutritious food and stay hydrated throughout the day.

Those older than 65 are especially susceptible to hypothermia, accounting for almost half of deaths caused by it, according to Home Instead Senior Care. This is because as people age, they can lose ability to feel how cold it really is.

During January Only, Vitt Heating & Air Conditioning Co., Inc., Offers Special on Gas Furnace Installation to Help … - January 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) January 08, 2015

Vitt Heating & Air Conditioning Co., Inc., based in St. Louis, MO, wants to help customers prepare for the coldest month of the year with deals on new gas furnaces. The New Year's sale will run through January 31, 2015, and will offer gas furnace installation starting at just $1,400 for an 80% efficient 40,000 BTU American Standard brand furnace.

Although winter has already officially begun, Vitt Heating & Air Conditioning Co. vice president Jeffrey Vitt says that now is the time for homeowners to be proactive and replace their furnaces.

The typical life expectancy of a furnace is just 15 years, says Vitt, so homeowners with furnaces from the year 2000 or before should make sure to at least get an inspection.

While the special from Vitt Heating & Air Conditioning Co. will cover basic installations of new furnaces and removals of old ones, customers still need to call to see if they qualify for the special pricing -- especially, Vitt warns, if they have an older furnace. At that time customers may also make an appointment for a free estimate.

There are other reasons, Vitt says, that homeowners should consider getting their older furnaces looked at.

"In my experience, the biggest problem with furnaces is that they can be operating but not safe," he explains. "Therefore, a lot of people never have work done on their furnaces, so they simply dont know whether or not the furnace is safe to use."

Technicians from heating and cooling companies like Vitt Heating & Air Conditioning Co. are able to tell homeowners whether or not a repair is "worth it," Vitt says, depending upon the age of the furnace.

The best solution, Vitt explains, is to "get the furnace inspected, get an estimate and consider the options from there. Most times it will be more cost effective to replace a furnace rather than repair it, but only after an inspection can homeowners know for sure."

When in doubt, says Vitt, homeowners should call Vitt Heating & Air Conditioning Co. for their free estimate.

Tips For Preparing Your Home For Bitter Cold - January 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    January 6, 2015 5:07 PM

Chris Martinez is a general assignment reporter for CBS 2...

(CBS) You may be ready for tonight, but what about your home? CBS 2s Chris Martinez has with tips for homeowners.

On a snow-socked street in Willow Springs, help arrived just in the nick of time. Michelle Shangs heat was not working and her call for repair is the kind especially common now.

The new furnaces, there are so many sensors and switches in them that need to be cleaned out, said Rick Broesch of Four Seasons Heating and Cooling.

Broesch tells people to, be proactive, not reactive. Clean it and get an annual maintenance done. Theyll find a lot of problems beforelike she has no heat now.

The advice is much the same when pondering your pipes. Precautions are already needed from an experts eye as our temps plunge.

In order to keep your pipes from freezing, John Baethke of John Baethke & Sons Plumbing says, you put it in the center and you want the trickle to be enough that we know the water is coming through the hot and cold side and youre good. These pipes underneath this kitchen wont freeze!

With winter in full swing, heating technicians respond to rush of service calls - January 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. When winter weather hits, the first place youll turn is the thermostat. But the furnace warm up has heating technicians working overtime. Theyre answering service calls for furnaces feeling the heat.

Whether your home is heated by a wood-burning fireplace, a gas furnace or some other service, there are preparations you need to make before winter weather hits hard.

On Friday power tools rang as loudly as Kevin Baileys phone did. Bailey is a service tech with Anthony Plumbing, Heating and Cooling, and hes dispatched to repair many furnaces each day.

Bailey says changing the filters in your furnace every few months can lengthen to time between unforeseen house calls.

Dirt causes about 60 percent of problems, maybe 60 to 80 percent of problems with furnaces and also with AC during the summertime, he explained.

On the fireplace front, Chris Loving is also a man in demand, sweeping and inspecting chimneys for Fluesbrothers Chimney Service.

Were booked out for a couple of weeks right now, Loving said.

Loving said its recommended that regularly-used chimneys get an annual inspection. He recommends fireplace-users stick with dry, split, seasoned wood, and those chimney sweeping logs arent enough to keep your home secure.

Theyre like chewing Trident. Theyre OK to use in conjunction with the sweep. They dont substitute or replace the sweeping action, he said.

Loving says a typical sweep and inspection will cost you $250. He also emphasized safety while using a wood-burning fireplace. He cited national statistics that show as many as three-quarters of all chimney fires are caused by failure to have that chimney serviced.
