Veteran's service project set to gear up - March 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

GOSHEN Aging veterans may not have to clean their gutters this spring.

Instead, a group of young men will perform weekly handyman services for the areas aging vets, thanks to a new partnership between Celebrate America and Teen Challenge.

Teen Challenge is a drug and alcohol recovery center that uses a comprehensive Christian approach to healing, according to its mission statement. Its Elkhart branch consists of males in their 20s. Teen Challenge students learn to cope with everyday issues while growing spiritually, emotionally, socially, educationally and physically. But now, the students are focusing on serving others.

The guys do work projects every day, said Eric Swanson, the program director of North Central Indiana Teen Challenge. Were going to incorporate Celebrate America to find veterans who need assistance.

The partner, Celebrate America, is the nonprofit organization that puts on the fireworks display at the Black Squirrel Golf Club, an annual event with an estimated 20,000 attendees. Now they are helping organize this initiative one that has a more lasting effect.

Its founder, Al Lane, has been a driving force behind the veteran service project. Lane served in World War II and has since appreciated being treated with special respect.

I realized there were elderly veterans, some of whom needed help with physical needs around the house or the yard, Lane said.

Lane added that he decided to start working with Teen Challenge after he saw the success theyve had helping young men grow into responsible young citizens.

Teen Challenge promotes a life in accordance with what the Bible teaches, and servitude is a part of it. Serving others is a method that Teen Challenge uses to transcend the selfishness of addictions.

We have a faith-based approach to recovery, said Swanson. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says if any man is in Christ he is a new creation. The old has gone and the new has come.

3 East Harlem victims to be laid to rest Wednesday - March 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

EAST HARLEM (WABC) -- Three more victims killed in the deadly gas explosion in East Harlem are set to be laid to rest Wednesday.

Family and friends with gather to bid a final farewell to George Amadeo.

Funeral services for the 44-year-old handyman will be held at 10 a.m. at the Church of St. Raymond Cemetery in the Bronx.

Services for mother and daughter Rosaura Barrios-Vazquez and Rosaura Hernandez-Barrios, 43 and 22, respectively, will be held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ortiz Funeral Home on East 116th Street.

On Tuesday, the NTSB found a gas main leak at the site, but they cautioned that they're still a long way from determining what caused the blast.

The leaking gas main was adjacent to 1646 Park Avenue, one of the buildings destroyed in the March 12 blast. According to the NTSB, the leak was detected during a pressure test on the 8-inch main beneath Park Avenue. A tracer gas escaped under normal operating pressure, investigators said.

Authorities have said the blast erupted about 15 minutes after someone from a neighboring building reported smelling gas. And the NTSB said Friday that that underground tests conducted in the hours after the explosion registered high concentrations of natural gas.

However, board spokesman Eric Weiss said investigators were far from deciding what caused the explosion.

"We don't determine the probable cause until the very, very end," he said.

Church services remember those lost in NYC blast - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    NEW YORK CITY (AP) -

A church hit by the loss of two members in an explosion that destroyed two New York City apartment buildings remembered the women in services Sunday with tears mixing in with the sounds of gospel, as members of a church that was demolished in the collapse joined another nearby house of worship for its service.

At the site of the blast, the last of the debris was being cleared away as investigators prepared to get started on finding the cause.

Bethel Gospel Assembly lost members Griselde Camacho and Carmen Tanco in the blast that also killed six others in the East Harlem neighborhood.

"We feel the void. Both women were very active members," said Michelle Robinson, the church's business administrator, adding that Tanco often served as an usher at services and would greet her fellow congregants at the door.

"We are a family and we're all just missing the big hugs she used to give," Robinson said.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was scheduled to speak at the church, and then visit the house of worship where members of the Spanish Christian Church were spending Sunday. The Spanish Christian Church was located in one of the two collapsed buildings. On Saturday a crew at the blast site found a large Bible in the rubble and returned it to the church's pastor.

At the scene of the explosion on Park Avenue and 116th Street, there were signs that the initial cleanup was coming to an end. Police barricades that had kept people away since Wednesday's blast were moved closer into the site, and pedestrians who had been kept far away were now allowed to walk closer.

The theory that Wednesday's explosion was due to a gas leak gained momentum Friday after the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates pipeline accidents, said underground tests conducted in the hours after the explosion registered high concentrations of natural gas. The NTSB will conduct its own inquiry after police and fire officials determine what might have caused the explosion.

City Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said Saturday that investigators should be able to get to the gas pipes and meters in the front of the buildings' basements Sunday, adding, "We'll be in full swing with the investigation."

All the Comforts of Home - March 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Home care services allow familiarity for elderly

The home is a place where countless memories are made with family and friends, but as a person gets older, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain that beloved property. Well-Being Total Home Care, located at 42 Main St., Suite 9 in Leominster, helps to ensure that the elderly and others in need get the services necessary to be able to stay in their homes for as long as possible. ffi Owner Keith Lanzilotti believes that Well-Being Total Home Care is part of a growing trend of accommodating the elderly and special needs individuals in their own homes by offering companionship, handyman services, and renovating their homes to meet their specific requirements. ffi Today there is so much exposure to it because as the population ages and remains healthy seniors are living active lives. Their children are now caring for their parents and want to help them remain happy and that often means staying in their own homes, he said. ffi Besides the added benefit of being more cost effective than moving into an assisted living facility, Lanzilotti said that there are additional benefits for people that need particular consideration. ffi For people with Alzheimers Disease, its more important to maintain a comfortable, familiar environment, he said. ffi Staff members of Well-Being Total Home Care provide lawn mowing and snow shoveling services, as well as installation of wheelchair ramps and grab-bars. ffi The professional caregivers of the company go into a persons home and assist them with any task needed around the house, from cleaning and paying bills to changing light bulbs and reminding clients to take their medication. ffi Lanzilotti takes great strides to hire the best people for the job. ffi We hire licensed caregivers that have strong backgrounds with seniors, disabled people and caring for people with Alzheimers disease. By doing that we will strengthen the trust and relationships with area businesses that also work with seniors and disabled, he said. ffi Lanzilotti had the idea for the company in 2011 after his father passed away and he had to witness first hand the pressure that loss put on his mother. ffi My mom was and still is very self-sufficient but needed some help doing the things my dad did for them, said Lanzilotti. ffi He was already beginning to lose interest in his job at high tech company, so he approached his cousin, Rick DiPaoli, a contractor for 30 years about starting a home care agency of their own. After a great deal of research and planning, Well-Being Total Home Care opened in April of 2012. ffi After nearly two years in business, Lanzilotti and DiPaoli hope to be able to continue to grow with the community. ffi The need for these services is growing and we want to be there for the community, Lanzilotti said.
