Amazon added grocery services to their website in 2007, offering same day or next day delivery services of fresh food and prepared meals to customers certain markets. Now it seems Amazon wants to be in the delivery business in a new facet. Gizmodo and other technology news outlets recently reported the retailer is testing a restaurant delivery service in Amazons hometown Seattle. The service, known as Amazon Local, will compete with restaurant delivery companies Seamless, Delivery.com, and GrubHub. The service connects hungry customers with restaurants in Seattle, and to date, 141 restaurants have signed on as providers. Amazon chose not to announce the service publicly, and instead launched it quietly in their hometown.
Amazon Fresh is currently available in several markets, including certain areas of Brooklyn and Philadelphia, both of which were added to the availability this fall. Amazon Local began in 2011, and started out offering daily deals for services and goods in customers areas, with some deals provided through LivingSocial. The program now includes Amazon Local Services, which promotes local handyman and installation services in nine cities, as of November 2014. Now in Seattle, Amazon Local includes restaurant delivery, with the possibility of more cities getting the feature. For Amazon, Amazon Local restaurant delivery offers a selection of local options for consumers based on their zipcode. From there, customers can then place their order for takeout or delivery from their desired restaurant and pay with their credit or debit card saved to their Amazon account. The restaurant does the actual delivery, however, and still are able to set their own delivery fee and minimum order amount. Users can access the service via Amazon Local and the retailers apps for Apple and Android devices. When taken to the restuarant results page, the customer is presented with a list of participating restaurants within their delivery radius, with information on price, services, distance, and the business hours. The list of participating restaurants feature a diverse section of cuisine, such as pizza, Italian, sandwiches and more. Gizmodo reports that 22 restaurants are available for delivery.
The addition of restaurant delivery to Amazon Local could pose a credible threat to Seamless, et al, especially if the service was added to Amazon Prime. The possibility of including Amazon Local with Prime is likely, especially as Amazon continues to look for more local services to offer, building on their existing offerings of babysitters, installation services, and handymen. With Amazon Fresh, the company made their first foray into providing food for their customers, and Amazon Local delivery is the logical next step. Unlike Seamless and other services which have a flat delivery fee, Amazon Local lets businesses select their own delivery fee, which could prove to be an advantage for participating restaurants trying to decide whether to go with Amazon or a competitor.

HARTFORD A defense witness testified Friday that the charges against Tiffany Stevens were the result of a scheme cooked up by her ex-husband and the handyman she is accused of hiring to kill him.
Larry Chace, who maintained the pool at a Simsbury estate where John McDaid worked as a handyman, told the Superior Court jury that Eric Stevens was going to pay McDaid for helping set up Tiffany Stevens.
Tiffany Stevens, 39, is on trial for attempted murder, accused of paying McDaid $5,000 to kill Eric Stevens, 49, in Simsbury in the spring of 2012. Tiffany and Eric Stevens are involved in a prolonged dispute for custody of their now 9-year-old daughter, and control of a large sum of money that goes to the parent who has custody.
Instead of killing Eric Stevens, McDaid told Stevens of the alleged plot and also cooperated with him and Simsbury police in making two recordings with Tiffany Stevens. The state contends that Tiffany Stevens discusses the plot on those recordings, which have been played in court.
Chace's testimony on Friday supported a central theme of defense attorney Hubert Santos' argument that McDaid, who has a long criminal record, assisted Eric Stevens in "setting up" Tiffany Stevens and will be paid for his efforts if Eric gets custody of the couple's daughter.
The conversation between Chace and McDaid occurred in mid-July 2012. Chace testified that he and McDaid talked frequently and would eat lunch together when Chace took care of the pool at the Simsbury estate.
Once he was finished working at the Simsbury property on that day, Chase testified, he told McDaid that he planned to go for a ride on his motorcycle. McDaid replied that he was going to go for a ride, too, prompting Chace to say he didn't know that McDaid had a motorcycle.
"He said, 'I don't have one but I'm going to get one,'" Chace testified. "He said he was going to set up Mrs. Stevens for Mr. Stevens. He was going to be rewarded with a motorcycle and job."
Chace, who is on parole for a 1979 murder in Berlin, told the jury that McDaid said he was going to get a "big Harley."
"He told me Mr. Stevens was going to buy him the Harley," Chace continued. "I didn't really fully understand what he was doing."

Christmas is three weeks from today, and for some kids in Oklahoma, there won't be any presents under the tree this year. But one organization is trying to change that.
Youth Services for Oklahoma County hosted its annual Christmas party for homeless teens. It's all part of their SKIL program, or supporting kids in independent living.
Gabrel and Paula are two teenagers out there on their own. They told News 9 they sometimes bounce around from couch to couch, but both have big dreams.
Paula wants to join the National Guard and become a registered nurse. Her favorite present? A book to help her study.
Gabrel has worked as a handyman since he was 12, and for the first time, he now has his own set of tools.
But even with the great presents, which both teenagers say are more necessity than want, they get something even more out of the SKIL program.
