On a cold January night two years ago, Regina Cappelli, a single grandmother raising two young grandsons, got the call from her local county child welfare agency.
Another grandchild an infant had just been removed from Cappellis daughter, also the mother of the other boys. Come get the baby, or he would go into foster care, she was told.
Overwhelmed and unprepared, Cappelli called Karen Barnes, another single grandmother raising a grandchild.
I was devastated and I was in tears, the Delaware County woman recalled. When you get these kids, you get the clothes on their back and thats it. I said, I dont know what Im going to do.
Her friend wasnt just sympathetic. She was outraged.
Karen said, Thats it! Somethings got to be done!
That night, Barnes got on social media. The next day, when she showed up at Cappellis home, the grandmother couldnt believe her eyes.
She filled up my living room! said Cappelli, now raising her three grandsons. Four contractor bags full of clothes, diapers out the wazoo, formula, a Pack n Play, a stroller, blankets galore, wipes. I couldnt imagine something like that from just overnight.
Barnes was also amazed by the robust response her posts received. She took it to heart.
I said to myself, I have a gift and I am definitely being called, Barnes said. I can do this.
And thus, Grands Stepping Up (GSU) was born. A nonprofit organization, GSU provides support to grandparents raising their grandchildren and kinship guardians raising their family members.
Everything I do and try to empower others to do comes from saying yes, said Barnes, 58.
For this former volunteer program coordinator who had to stop working due to a chronic gastrointestinal condition, saying yes meant taking emergency custody and eventually adopting her granddaughter, Ellianna, now 9. It came to mean seeing other guardians who needed help, just like she often had, and deciding to do something about it.
Grands Stepping Up has come a long way since it started in 2020.
The program runs Denis Pantry, a place where any member of the Delaware County community and grandparents from anywhere can come for food, clothing, and baby goods. GSU estimates the pantry served about 500 families last year. It is located in the basement of Llanerch Hills Chapel in Havertown and named after Barnes brother, who died of COVID-19.
But Grands Stepping Up has expanded in other ways, too.
The group has partnered with other organizations like the Main Line Art Center and the Kiwanis of the Main Line to provide free art programs for the grandkids. GSU has also helped provide holiday meals for hundreds of grandfamilies.
GSU now has a legal clinic with local family lawyers offering their services on a sliding scale. There are three licensed therapists volunteering their services for trauma-focused counseling for the children and their guardians. The group also has been able to provide some financial assistance.
Often, GSU will put out a special request on its Facebook page and get it granted, like the funds raised to pay for a tombstone. Their appeals are seldom ignored, Barnes said.
I can tell you we always have our donors who come through for us, she said. A lot of people have been touched by so much stuff in their lives, they want to come forward to help.'
A lot of the grandparents raising grandchildren are living on fixed incomes. Some who do get governmental support say it is meager, but they are reluctant to get more involved with the child welfare system, even though it would mean more aid.
Some profess a lack of trust in the foster care system. They say they dont believe the intrusion would be in the best interest of their families. Others feel theyre to blame for their offsprings problems that rendered them unable to care for their own children.
I was so mortified, embarrassed. I was thinking this was my fault, Barnes said.
The bottom line, they say, is many of these family caretakers are struggling.
We truly are, as grandparents and most importantly the children, the silent victims of the opioid epidemic and the mental-health crisis in this country, Barnes said. We are the silent victims that no one was even considering because were all hiding.
But with a group like Grands Stepping Up, theyre no longer alone. They are helping each other.
Its like a parenting organization for grandparents, said Mary Eileen Johnston, 62, a Havertown grandmother raising her 4-year-old grandson. I know theyll always be there for me even if its just to ring and say, I need to talk.
Johnston discovered GSU on Facebook about two years ago. She stopped by the pantry to check it out, bringing some items to donate, and got to know some of the people active in GSU. A church organist who lost work when many congregations stopped in-person services, Johnston was able to find recreation opportunities for her grandson from GSUs partners. Thats included arts supplies and programs through the Kiwanis and the Main Line Art Center and dance lessons donated by Twirl, a Newtown Square dance studio. And Johnston has become a pantry volunteer.
Community members have heard about GSU and decided to pitch in, like Amie and Jim Cannon, a Havertown couple who adopted five children from the foster care system. Jim Cannon has extended his Cannon Handyman Services to fix grandparents heaters. Amie, meanwhile, helped run a project in which the grandchildren grew tomatoes that they presented to the grandparents.
Its kids learning to give back, she said.
Kathy Baggio, 68, a retired medical transcriptionist from Secane, is also a pantry volunteer and chair of GSUs support group. Raising her grandsons, ages 12 and 17, GSU has helped with desperately needed car repairs, utility bills, and funds toward a housing security deposit.
Theres definitely not enough support for the grandparents, and Im not saying that because I am one, Baggio said. A lot of grandparents have given up their savings, if they had any. They are on fixed incomes, and things have become so much harder out there.
Many of these families also have mental-health needs.
Beth Tyson directs GSUs trauma-focused therapeutic services. At present, three licensed therapists offer counseling at no charge, but Tyson hopes to find others who will also volunteer services. Many of the children have experienced trauma and need mental health, but many of the grandparents could use help as well, said Tyson, a child trauma consultant and author.
There are so many unique challenges that come along with raising your grandchild, she said.
In the coming year, she is planning on introducing webinars on trauma-informed parenting for these guardians, as well as hopefully yoga and meditation classes.
Expanding mental-health help and being able to offer more much-needed financial support are two of the ways Barnes would like to see Grands Stepping Up grow. Last year, the nonprofit got its first grant about $20,000 from the Phillies and Barnes hopes to apply for more.
All in all, Grands Stepping Up has done pretty well for a group that got started from a Facebook call for help. As much as its come along, its roots are still in the family. Chelsea Barnes, one of Barnes daughters, is her vice president. Randi Kobielnik, her oldest offspring, is her chief operating officer. Ellianna, the granddaughter she adopted, is one of her volunteers.
So is Elliannas mother. In the years since she had the child when she was 17, the young woman, who did not wish to have her name used, said she has turned her life around.
Ive been clean for six years, Im active in my daughters life, and Ive rebuilt my relationship with my mother, my sisters, and my daughter, she said. A lot of my moms grandparents and volunteers know Im Elliannas mom, and that I was a drug addict and Im clean. It gives them a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel, like, Maybe this could be for my family, too.
Barnes says she was touched by the help she got along the way. It inspired her. It still does.
I appreciate everyone who has ever done anything for me and my granddaughter, but I recognized I had a vision that was greater and bigger. I knew we could help better. I knew we could do more. We could get more people involved to make more of a difference, said Barnes.
Its just the power of saying yes and not giving up.

My very intelligent and talented husband retired from a government job about 10 years ago. He has a modest pension and Social Security income. I am 10 years younger and still employed. We own our house and cars, and we have no debt. We are not wealthy at all, but I stand to inherit from a family estate within a few years.
Here is my dilemma. He has skills that are in high demand; he was once a master electrician, although he has let his license lapse. He thoroughly understands construction, plumbing, roofing, etc., and loves to do odd jobs and bring in extra income.
I guess he feels stimulated by the variety of jobs that come along, and people are so grateful to have him do handyman-type chores that he is constantly in demand so much that in the summer, we cant get away for a vacation.
He has built bathrooms, tiled kitchens and rewired lights. Today, he installed an electric porch awning. His reputation is great and his name has spread by word of mouth, mostly among friends and neighbors.
If there is a fire in a house where he worked, he will be blamed. I am terrified because when that happens, we could be liable financially.
He charges a flat $20 an hour and supplies his own tools. Any materials for the job are charged to our personal account at a hardware store, and he turns in the receipts and bills the customer when the job is over, so there is no markup on materials. So far, he has never had a problem collecting payment from his grateful customers.
He isnt claiming any of this money as income on our taxes. He has no contractors license and doesnt get any permits. He isnt bonded or insured in any way. He says that he always tells people up front that he is not a contractor, but he will work for them by the hour if they tell him what they want done. In other words, they are the contractor and he is just working for them.
Someday, something will go wrong. He may fall off a ladder and get hurt, or a pipe may break and flood a house. Even if it isnt his fault, if there is a fire in a house where he worked, he will be blamed. I am terrified because when that happens, we could be liable financially. I am also worried that someone will report him for contracting without a license, or the Internal Revenue Service will be notified. So many things could go wrong.
When I try to point out that he is threatening my financial security as well as his own, he says I am paranoid and that he is just helping people.
Please advise me on how to protect myself and our joint assets in case he gets sued. I just want to retire someday soon, and to not have to work until I die. I really dont want a divorce, but I dont see any way to get him to quit moonlighting this way until something really bad happens.

Dear Worried,
Your husband enjoys helping people and feeling useful in his retirement. Hes good at his job, and it gives him a lot of pleasure figuring out the source of problems.
I have a lot of respect for contractors and people who have the patience and smarts to figure out how stuff works. Sometimes its a simple solution that can save the customer hundreds or thousands of dollars. And those other times? It can be complex, complicated and, yes, fraught with bigger problems and risks, especially when electricity is involved.
As for the risks: Your husband is vastly underselling his services. Even a cursory look at the rates of similar services on platforms like TaskRabbit show handymen and contractors charging multiple times what your husband charges. Even hanging a picture can cost you $50 or $60 an hour, or more.
Given the risk and reward involved, his customers should be willing to sign a liability waiver. This agreement is to protect him and you. You cant put a price on peace of mind and a good nights sleep. Tell him that.
Enlist a third party, preferably a lawyer, who can explain what is at stake: a fine, reimbursement of back taxes or even criminal charges.
Liability waivers are, however, not airtight. There are two types of cases: ordinary negligence and gross negligence. The former mainly deals with unintentional issues, while the latter typically applies to willful disregard for customer or participant safety, according to the Frickey Law Firm in Lakewood, Colo. The waiver cannot supersede state law or public policy.
It is still possible to sue even after signing such a waiver, usually due to the aforementioned gross negligence, misrepresentation and/or defective products, the firm adds.
The IRS issue will prove trickier. I assume he does these jobs under the table partly due to his low rate, which makes him popular among his customer base, but raising his price would help reduce the amount of work and the risk associated with being discovered. For this and the previous issue, enlist a third party, preferably a lawyer, who can explain what is at stake: a fine, reimbursement of back taxes and even criminal charges. This may give your husband the wakeup call he needs.
He may feel defensive when you approach him about his liability and tax evasion. Perhaps he is fearful, and avoiding having a difficult conversation seems like the easiest route to take. But approaching him in a spirit of support and providing solutions could help bring him around.
You might start out with something non-confrontational like this: I want you to continue doing what you love and helping people, but I also want to make sure that were checking all the boxes.
The idea is to help him see what he can do to help himself, rather than what you believe he is doing to you. Both points are valid, but the former may be more effective.

Five months ago, Brian McMahon did handyman-like things as a hobby.
Then everything changed at the end of August when he took over his aunt and uncles business Ace Handyman Services. The company serves the south Pittsburgh area.
McMahon, long an entrepreneurial spirit, is a full-time businessman with a base in Monongahela and craftsmen in Washington, Donora and Monongahela.
(Being a handyman) myself is still a hobby, McMahon said. I do things at home and I do some other stuff. As for our business, I allow and count on our craftsmen to do the work they are skilled in doing.
Previously, McMahon had an online vehicle detailing operation, which he started in ninth grade while attending Trinity Area School District, and later a health and fitness online venture.
Even in the seventh grade, he sold gum in the middle school for a quarter and made $150 in a week before his enterprise was shut down by the assistant principal.
McMahon utilizes longstanding business acumen and the hand skill and knowledge of leading a staff to make a go of things.
He is enjoying his new role.
The joy and satisfaction of the customer is really fulfilling, McMahon said.
Its been great. The best part about this is I can focus on my skill set and our craftsmen can focus on theirs. You dont have to be a handyman to run a handyman company.
McMahon employs four craftsmen and two office managers.
We do a bunch of dry wall, minor plumbing and electrical jobs, and building stairs, he said.
McMahon said the company has worked with churches, remolded bathrooms and basements for homeowners and others.
Weve built six ramps for patients who wanted to come home and needed some things to function normally in their home, McMahon said. Weve done two bathroom rebuilds related to this. We had to take a tub out and replace with a walk-in shower, equipped with bars.
We look at most any job, if requested. No job is too small for us.
By definition, a handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs.
Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects such as interior or exterior painting, electrical projects, remodeling and plumbing.
The other tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more.
Handymen may have flat fees for certain services or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they dont have the same specialization.
Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, Californias Building and Professions Code small operations permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500.
A handyman can be another resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, however, for more complex and expansive projects, it can be more responsible to hire a specialized contractor.
Honestly, this has been super, McMahon said. Some of the remodels are nice because it gives us the opportunity to connect with our customers and thats really nice.
People look for a handyman to do a job that a bigger contractor wouldnt be interested in for various reasons. They call it the handyman lane.

Many publishers are seeing a spike in both digitaltraffic and print subscriptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, including Trusted Media Brands Taste of Home and Family Handyman.
In April, the brands reported recordnumbers during their biggest month ever, with TasteofHome.com recording a 66% increase of monthly unique visitors year-over-year at 32.2 million. FamilyHandyman.com recorded a 44%increase year-over-year at 9.6 million.
Each brand saw traffic spike between March and April, too, with Taste of Home reporting a 22% increase and Family Handyman reporting a38% increase.
The increase in traffic is due, in part, to the brands quick pivot early on in the pandemic.
When news of the virus spreading in the U.S. startedaccelerating in early March, we anticipated that more people would be staying close to home, Beth Tomkiw, Trusted Media Brands Chief Content Officer, told Publishers Daily. Sowe came together as a group to identify the content categories and topics Taste of Home could organize around in a way that is true to the brand and our audience during thecoronavirus.

That meant tapping into already popular topics, like comfort foods and baking and freezing and preserving food. They also looked at ingredient substitutions with pantrystaples and cleaning and disinfecting tips.
Following its first meeting, Taste of Home content director Jeanne Sidner put together a task force of stakeholders from distributionchannels, including search, social, newsletters and partners.
The goal was to meet daily to look at real-time content performance data, share ideas and use our learnings to boost visitsand engagement across all channels, said Tomkiw.
The team currently meets once a week to checking our brand stance on new issues that arise and creating relevant new content,while moving away from topics that are slowing down.
Some of the most popular collaborations across the Taste of Home teams include one focused on bread baking, which has seenthe brands Basic Homemade Bread recipe clock in 4.4 million visits since March 1. The newsletter team created bread-specific sends, while the social team create a Homemade Bread Challenge.
The brands culinary team members created Cooking from Home videos that repurposed the basic recipe to create mini breakfast pizzas, apple dumpling pull-apart bread and cinnamonrolls.
After reviewing data that revealed banana bread was among the most popular recipes in the U.S., the Taste of Home team created a My Bakeable Challenge themed around it. Thechallenge had the highest engagement for any Bakeable challenge ever.
Taste of Home has also seen success with gardening articles, which experienced a spike in late April thatcontinues.
For its part, Family Handyman has relied on its service journalism and calm voice during the pandemic.
The brands direct-to-consumer product DIY Universityreported a 53% increase in transactions year-over-year in April, with a 72% increase in revenue year-over-year, as it provided readers with how-to stories, such as How to Power Your Homewith Renewable Energy, How to Build a Backyard Shed and How to Build a Deck."
Noted Tomkiw: We have forward-thinking brainstorms and discussions about wherewe need to go next. Being a journalist is fantastic these days because you have data to help inform decisions and data to demonstrate what works and what doesnt.

A Cache Valley handyman is trying to raise funds for a Preston woman in horror story living conditions.
Joseph Little, who operates Jumping Joe Handyman Services in Nibley, isn't content to just fix Preston resident Janet Stricko's floor, he wants to see her living conditions improved period.
To do that, he's embarked on a fund-raising campaign to obtain the funds needed to improve her living space. On Friday and Saturday, May 8-9, Little, his friends, and his family, will be at the Stokes Parking Lot selling cookies, brownies, suckers, lemonade, and other snacks to raise funds for Stricko's home repairs. Some of her friends, church members and leaders are also helping, he said.
"Hopefully, the community can rally around and help this lady," said Mayor Dan Keller. He has been trying to help the situation by researching health and welfare programs that can benefit Stricko.
Littles' wife, Kaylyn, has also created a GoFundMe page for the same reason. It can be found atgofundme.com/f/utpkt-janet. To date, 32 donors have raised $2,917 of the $10,000 estimates is needed to help out Stricko.
