A voice for seniors -

For a quarter century, the Lambton Seniors Association has provided a voice for the elderly in the community, driving change while promoting and providing services to allow seniors to live independently.
And now the non-profit charitable organization is stepping back to celebrate 25 years of service.
The organization came into being in 1990 when a group of concerned seniors identified five challenges for elderly people in the region. Housing, transportation, loneliness, health and community involvement were all issues acknowledged as being particularly important for seniors who lived in Lambton County.
From the efforts of the Lambton Health Unit, a small group of seniors decided to hold an inclusive county-wide meeting at the fairgrounds in Wyoming. Out of that meeting came the Lambton Seniors Association.
In June 1990, LSA held its inaugural annual general meeting at a picnic in Mooretown. Twenty-five picnics later, the association is still going strong, providing services, information and advocacy for those over 55 who live in Lambton County.
Chair Jim Houston joined the association back in 1998. Now 76, Houston has seen firsthand the work the organization has done in the community and has heard much praise and acclaim from seniors who able to live more independently partly because of the association nd its programs.
The flagship initiative of the association is the Handyman/Handywoman program, said Houston, which began in 1992. It links skilled tradespeople with seniors in the community, giving seniors access to a myriad of home improvement services by qualified workers for a reduced rate.
The program originally started in Peterborough, but as a result of Lambton Seniors undertaking that program we received recognition county-wide, Houston said. It started with about 60 or so handymen and handywomen and they performed over 9,000 visits during that first year.
The primary objective of the program is to keep seniors in their own home. These guys and gals, most of them are tradespeople or retirees, work for $12 an hour if they use your tools, $15 an hour if they use their tools, he said.
The only thing they cant do is electrical work, because that requires a journeyman. But they cut grass, do plumbing, paint rooms. Weve even got a computer geek who can help seniors out.

What a home handyman can do for you -

Handymen are a great help to the average homeowner. They are usually capable of handling a variety of tasks so you can ask them to take care of several items in the same visit. Whats more, once you find a reliable handyman, you will tend to build a relationship of sorts. Its reassuring to say, You know that ornery bathroom faucet of mine? Its acting up again and be understood by someone who is in a position to solve the problem. Read more about handymen and the role they can play in your home.
Handyman vs. Contractor
Even though there is a certain amount of overlap between the services of a handyman and those of a building contractor, you will find some distinct differences as well. Contractor work, such as wiring a houses electrical system, requires a state-issued license. Contractors usually specialize in one area of home construction and repair. Handymen, on the other hand, are often generalists, skilled at numerous small home improvement or maintenance tasks. They do not need a license (although its essential to hire only individuals who are insured, for their protection and your own) but may be legally limited to projects under a specified dollar amount. Cost to hire a handyman can be either an hourly or per job rate, but will almost invariably be substantially lower than the charge for a contractor.
Handy Do List
Just about every household has a honey do list of chores waiting to be done around the home. If you dont have the time or the inclination to tackle it yourself, hire a handyman who will turn it into a handy do list and, in short order, a handy did list. Here are some typical handyman tasks you might want to include:
Make the Most of Your Handymans Services
Before you hire any handyman, ensure that he is ready, willing, and able to do the type of work you need. Make the most of the hours that he will be working for you. Try to clarify ahead of time exactly what you would like him to accomplish and pinpoint the nature of any repairs to be performed. A written list can be an excellent time- and money-saver. Bear in mind that while handyman service is frequently billed by the hour, there tends to be a minimum charge and often a travel fee as well. This means that it will be cheaper to pay for one service call of longer duration than two shorter ones.
Ask for a price estimate and, in the case of larger jobs, a signedcontract.
Last but not least, check the fine print. Find out whether the work youd like done will require a building permit and verify that having a handyman perform routine maintenance tasks on, say, a major kitchen appliance will not void your warranty.

SUSSEX COUNTY -- The Stanhope handyman accused of stabbing a woman to death in 2012 won't put his defense before a jury -- but has instead opted for a bench trial, the New Jersey Herald reports.
Gregg Murphy earlier this month rejected rejected a plea deal for 30 years and will instead opt to go to trial.
As previously reported by the Star-Ledger, Murphy is charged with killing Mariann Ferreira, 56, on Dec. 3, 2012, by repeatedly stabbing her in her home in rural Green Township. Law enforcement officials have said Murphy admitted killing Ferreira, but could not provide any reason.
According to the Herad, Murphy told a judge Thursday he understood his choice meant his fate would be decided by just one person -- a judge. He said he wasn't coerced into the choice, and that he understood the charges against him, according to the report.
Prior to retiring in January of 2012, Ferreira worked for the Morris County Division of Aging, Disability and Veterans, helping people find assisted-living facilities for themselves and loved ones.
Ferreira's son told the Star-Ledger in 2013 Murphy had often done work at Ferreira 's house. He'd recently uilt a deck on one side of her home. urphy did high-quality work and his prices were fair, which worked well for Ferreira, as she didn't have much money, her son said.
She felt bad for him and she wanted to help him out. She kept giving him work" and trusted him, Jared Ferreira said at the time.
"He admitted stabbing the victim multiple times with the purpose of killing her. He acknowledged he had no justification and couldnt say why he did it," First Assistant Prosecutor Gregory Mueller told Superior Court Judge N. Peter Conforti shortly after the arrest, during Murphys first appearance in Superior Court.
Murphy remains in the Sussex county Jail in lieu of $750,000 bail

COUNTY councillors from all parties have formed a united front to fight for a better deal for Hampshire.
They will send a cross-party letter urging local government secretary Eric Pickles to stop cutting the authoritys funding.
Councillors fear further cuts could damage frontline services, including safeguarding some of the countys most vulnerable children and adults.
The authority has lost 51 per cent of its Government funding in the last six years.
As previously reported, library funding has been slashed, neighbourhood wardens axed, bus subsidies removed and hundreds of council jobs lost.
Funding has also been stopped for gardening and handyman services at sheltered accommodation and frail pensioners' homes.

Hampshire is bracing itself for a further 100 million in cuts that are likely to come into effect after 2017.

The sharing economy might be getting lots of buzz, but Kevin Hipkins thinks its just creating a culture of tax cheats.
Hipkins, president of Molly Maid, a Mississauga-based cleaning services company, says these new disruptive tech companies like Handy and Homejoy, funded through the deep pockets of venture capital, are not playing by the rules.
Because these companies consider the cleaner, handyman or furniture assembler to be independent contractors, theyre not employees, and therefore not subject to significant employer contributions for items such as employment insurance or Canada Pension Plan.
If we could wave a magic wand, we could bring down our costs by about 30 per cent, said Hipkins. And avoid all this messy tax stuff.
Molly Maid, with about 1,200 employees, operating in all provinces except Quebec, ends up at a disadvantage when it comes to its profit model, compared to these new companies, he said.
Taxation is a moral responsibility, Hipkins argued. I think we are creating a culture of tax cheats.
He concedes that cleaning services and cleaners have long represented a huge chunk of the underground economy some estimates peg it at more than $3 billion a year in Canada.
However, Hipkins believes theres a difference when its a small under-the-table arrangement between a client and individual cleaner, versus a large U.S. company, with millions in market capitalization.
He argues that the big company should be required to play by the rules.
Handy, which launched in Toronto last April and in Vancouver in June, says it is absolutely not evading taxes.

A Handyman for That Honey-Do List -

Tired of waiting for that honey-do list to get done? Consider hiring a handyman instead to tie up all those loose ends around your house. Just make sure to follow these five tips:
Understand pricing. Many handyman services, but not all, charge an hourly rate and a fee for travel.
Yvonne Costin, owner of Grandmas Handyman Service in Aurora, Colo., charges $75 for the first hour and $60 for each additional hour, plus a $20 travel fee, for the employees she sends to peoples homes. Were basically a time, prep, material company, she says. When people have a honey-do list, we cant give them an estimate for that.
James Payne, owner of One Handyman and a Van in Mason, Ohio, says he doesnt offer a set rate, but determines how much to charge based on the length and difficulty of the job.
Tasks like changing out a garbage disposal could cost about $100 if everything goes perfectly, he says, but unforeseen issues, especially in older homes, can result in a higher cost. I prefer, before I start giving quotes to people, to look at it, he says.
Explain your problem in detail.
Handymen like to know what theyre up against, so be prepared to tell them in as much detail as possible.
Payne says it helps him determine whether he wants to do the job and what materials he might need. I try to pick their brain before I drive 100 miles for 50 bucks, he says.
Costin says that sometimes when people explain their issues, she can help them solve them over the phone. I love giving advice, she says. Thats what grandmas do.
Know the scope. Handyman services stick to smaller jobs. They wont rewire or replumb your house.
