Construction to widen and improve the safety of a 1.5-mile stretch of North William Street (U.S. 117) in Goldsboro began Monday with the installation of orange-and-white drums and other barriers.
An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor, JSmith Civil, LLC of Goldsboro, will widen the road to four lanes between the U.S. 70 Bypass and U.S. 70/U.S. 13.
Additionally, a raised median and concrete curbs and gutters will be built.
Most of the route has two lanes.
The contractor will not be allowed to close or narrow lanes during the morning (6-9 a.m.) and afternoon (4-7 p.m.) weekday commute, so drivers should expect lane closures and delays traveling through the area at other times.
Motorists should slow down and be alert for construction crews and equipment.
The median will improve safety by redirecting drivers on some of the side streets into turning right. If they want to go in the opposite direction, drivers will use a dedicated lane a short distance away to safely make a U-turn. This design is known as a reduced-conflict intersection because it reduces the risk of serious collisions.
As part of the contract, traffic signals will be installed on North William Street at Neil Street, 11th Street, Patetown Road and Industry Court.
The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023.
The NCDOT awarded the $15.3 million contract in March. Work could not begin until all of the utility lines had been relocated.

Although preparing your home for winter is a fairly consistent process year-to-year, many homes have seen significantly more use this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. If your home will serve as your office or school throughout the winter months, its important to address issues that may have been noticed but tolerable during winters past.
Consider these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry to help ensure your home is ready before winter weather strikes.
Beyond proper physical and structural considerations of winter preparations, the increased daily usage of your home naturally increases the importance of indoor air quality. Since windows and doors will likely be closed more often, moisture levels within your home can be significantly affected. Use a humidifier, if necessary, to maintain a relative humidity between 45-50%, which is healthier and can feel more comfortable. It can also keep wooden doors and windows functioning properly and wood furniture and floors looking good.
To keep your furnace from failing when you need it most, get it inspected by a professional before you need to rely on it to heat your home in the dead of winter. If youre not leaving the house and turning down the thermostat each day, this will be especially important this year. Regular tune-ups can prolong your furnaces life, help prevent carbon monoxide leaks and ensure your unit is working at maximum efficiency. If a whole-house humidifier is included as part of the heating system, also inspect the humidifier and replace the element, if necessary.
Air infiltration is one of the largest culprits of reductions in a homes efficiency. Small air leaks can add up to significant heat loss and a corresponding increase in energy consumption. If replacing window screens with storm windows and installing a storm door on your house isnt realistic, increase energy efficiency by sealing gaps around window and door moldings with caulk to help keep heat from escaping. If any pipes or ducts travel through an exterior wall of your home, you can also use caulking and weather-stripping to help block potential entry points for cold air.
Improper drainage away from the home is one of the biggest causes of water leaking into basements and crawlspaces. Gutters and downspouts have the single purpose of routing water away from your home to help prevent damage to your foundation. Once leaves have fallen and before the first snow, ensure your gutters are properly secured and clear of debris. Clogged gutters can lead to improper drainage and potential overflow, ice damming or other water-related issues. Also adjust downspouts so they direct water at least 5 feet from the house to help minimize the possibility of water run-off back toward the foundation.
When water freezes, it expands. Any residual water in pipes that is exposed to freezing temperatures, including interior lines located in exterior walls or unheated areas, can burst. Start by disconnecting hoses and shutting off exterior faucets, draining any water that remains in them and storing hoses indoors to prevent cracks. Drain any other pipes, valves or in-ground sprinklers that may be exposed to the elements and, for an extra layer of protection, wrap water spigots with covers to prevent damage. Sometimes a simple trick like keeping a cabinet door cracked open to allow warm air into the space can prevent frozen pipes.

New York, Sept. 30, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Reportlinker.com announces the release of the report "Electric Heat Tracing Market with COVID-19 Impact, by Type, Application, Vertical And Region - Global Forecast to 2025" - https://www.reportlinker.com/p05208347/?utm_source=GNW
The major factor restraining the growth of the electric heat tracing market is the devastating effects of overlapping of heating cables. The main purpose of using an electrical heat tracing system is to compensate for heat loss and maintain the process temperature.
Hence, the heating cables should not touch, crossover, and overlap themselves after the installation since the overlapping of cables results in overheating and burnout and can damage the heat tracing system beyond repair. This is expected to impact the electric heat tracing market negatively in coming years. The market is expected to decline in 2020 mainly due to the impact of COVID-19.As the oil & gas industry is one of the most impacted industries in 2020, players in this industry are focusing on reducing CAPEX, which would affect the electric heat tracing market.
Though the market is expected to be impacted in 2020, it is expected to start to recover by 2021 and will fully recover by 2022.
Self-regulating: The fastest-growing segment of the electric heat tracing market, by typeSelf-regulating is the fastest-growing segment of the electric heat tracing market, by type.In self-regulating heat tracing systems, heating cables are designed and built to regulate their output according to the requirements.
The heat output is automatically adjusted in response to the increase or decrease of ambient temperatures. The self-regulating feature of the system prevents the creation of high surface temperature.
Hence, there are negligible chances of any fire hazard even in the presence of inflammable gases or liquids in and around the pipelines. Moreover, infinitely parallel heating circuit enables cutting self-regulating heating cables to any length in the field or during the design process, thereby minimizing waste and increasing installation flexibility.
These advantages are expected to propel the demand for self-regulating cables during the forecast period.Freeze protection & process temperature maintenance: The largest segment of the electric heat tracing market, by applicationThe electric heat tracing market for freeze protection & process temperature maintenance application is expected to hold the largest market share from 2019 to 2025.The freeze protection application is especially important since freezing can damage pipes and equipment.
During low-temperature conditions, it becomes important for various end-user industries to protect their products or materials carrying pipelines and preserve vessels and tanks against freezing. Also, in the process temperature maintenance application, generally, there is a need to maintain a higher temperature of fluids, such as fuel oil, acids, and fertilizers.
There are numerous upcoming oil & gas and chemical projects planned across major regions such as North America and Europe, which is expected to increase the demand for electric heat tracing systems for freeze protection & process temperature applications during the forecast period.
North America: The fastest growing region in the electric heat tracing marketThe North American region is expected to dominate the electric heat tracing market and is projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Replacement of conventional systems with electric heat tracing systems and the expansion of oil and gas production pipelines, increasing adoption of electric heat tracing systems for freeze protection and floor heating applications in countries such as the US and Canada, and various new oil & gas and chemical projects planned in North America in the next 3 to 5 years are among the major factors driving the market growth in the region.
The study contains insights from various industry experts, ranging from component suppliers to Tier 1 companies and OEMs. The break-up of the primaries is as follows: By Company Type: Tier 1 45%, Tier 2 30%, and Tier 3 25% By Designation: C-level Executives 40%, Directors 35%, and Others 25% By Region: North America 45%, Europe 30%, APAC 15%, and RoW 10%

When you become an owner of a home, foundation maintenance cannot be ignored. If you end up with a foundation crack or other damage, the repair cost will likely be very high. About $12.5 billion are spent on foundation repairs every year.
Foundation issues can often be prevented. Usually, a lack of preventative maintenance causes most issues. Here are some of the foundation maintenance tasks you can take on to ensure you dont end up with a massive repair bill.
1. Annual Foundation Inspections
Having your foundation inspected every year is one of the easiest ways you can prevent damage. You can learn how to do it yourself or hire a professional to come out and do an inspection. Either way, taking the time to look at your foundation will help you to see if there is an issue.
Its a good idea to check around your foundation after a big rainstorm, as well. You will be able to see if the water is pooling in specific areas where drainage may not be great.
2. Compact Backfill Areas
When a home is built, backfill areas are created to allow water to drain away from the foundation. These areas are usually filled with loose soil and created with a slope away from the foundation.
Over time, the soil may flatten leading to ponding around the foundation. Homeowners should use a heavy piece of wood to tamp down the backfill areas. Adding more soil may be necessary to maintain the proper slope.
3. Annual Inspection of Other Concrete Structures
Patios, driveways, and sidewalks can act as a barrier to help protect the foundation. However, they can also cause foundation damage, if they become cracked or damaged from moisture.
Every year, you should inspect these structures and look for cracks, pooling of water, and other potential issues. This is most important during the first five years of owning a new home since the foundation will adjust the most during this time.
4. Make Sure Gutters and Downspouts Work Properly
Usually, you need to clean the gutters at least twice a year; once before the winter season and once in the spring. Clean gutters and downspouts will work together to move water from the roof away from your home. They are a great defense system for your home.
However, if your gutters or downspouts become clogged, you could end up with a very big issue. Clogged gutters lead to the pooling of water on the roof, which can lead to major issues. Downspouts can also become clogged causing even bigger issues.
Along with clogging, gutters and downspouts not installed correctly may cause water to pool in specific areas around your foundation. Make sure the downspouts are installed with the proper slope so water moves away from the foundation and doesnt come back
There are many things you should pay attention to when it comes to foundation maintenance. A proper inspection each year will go a long way to ensure you dont end up with a huge repair bill.
I would love to be part of your journey when the time is right for you. If you ever have a real estate question or need, or know someone who does, trust that you can turn to me. I will help you make the right move! Anna Granger 704-650-5707 | annagrangerhomes@gmail.com | http://www.1stchoicepropertiesinc.com
