City to begin major project to improve pedestrian accessibility and drainage on north end of Camino Del Mar - February 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The City of Del Mar is investing nearly $1 million to enhance pedestrian accessibility through the installation of sidewalks, repair streets, and improve drainage in the Beach Colony area between 22nd Street and the San Dieguito River.

Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2014. The project, which is part of an effort to improve sidewalk connectivity City-wide over the next several years, includes construction of curb, gutter, and sidewalks on both sides of Camino del Mar, 20 pedestrian ramps, pavement rehabilitation, and landscape planting areas.

Additionally, underground storm drain infrastructure will be constructed on the east side of Camino del Mar at 27th Street. Groundbreaking will occur in March, with completion scheduled by Memorial Day.

The cost for this community investment is estimated to be $963,000, paid for using a portion of the Citys share of revenues from TransNet, the County-wide, voter-approved half-cent sales tax that can only be used for local transportation projects.

The project design is consistent with the Camino del Mar Streetscape Plan established in 1996, as well as the Citys Community Plan goal to emphasize a pedestrian-oriented environment. The City has a multi-year capital improvement program to construct sidewalks along corridors with high pedestrian volumes and no sidewalks. This segment of Camino del Mar was prioritized because it is heavily traveled by pedestrians and there are drainage issues that need to be improved. Future planned projects include other segments of Camino del Mar and Jimmy Durante Boulevard.

The City of Del Mar will host an open house on Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Powerhouse Community Center, located at 1658 Coast Boulevard in Del Mar, to provide information and answer questions about the project.

For information on the open house or the project, contact Assistant Planner Katie Benson at (858) 755-9313.

Hart Road and Sunset Drive construction to begin this month - February 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ROUND LAKE The village of Round Lake has announced that construction will soon begin on roadway and stormwater drainage improvements on Hart Road and Sunset Drive. This project will include roadway widening on Hart Road as well as improvements to this congested corridor that is lined with industrial businesses and the transportation facilities for Round Lake Area School District 116, Round Lake High School and Middle School, accoring to a news release from the village.

The improvements will reduce traffic congestion along the Hart Road corridor and at the Cedar Lake Road intersection, and improve safety conditions for pedestrians and students attending John T. Magee Middle School and Round Lake High School. The inclusion of a new storm sewer on both Hart Road and Sunset Drive will mitigate flooding issues and enhance this important business corridor of the community.

The project limits of construction will be from Hart Road beginning at the Metra railroad tracks and continue east to Cedar Lake Road and Sunset Road at the intersection of Hart Road and continue north to West Long Lake Drive. All work is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2014.

Improvements will include: roadway widening and reconstruction of Hart Road and resurfacing of Sunset Drive; traffic signal upgrades at the intersection of Hart Road and Cedar Lake Road; drainage improvements including a new storm sewer (Hart Rd and Sunset Drive); and installation of curb, gutter and new sidewalks with ADA ramps.

The Federal Surgace Transportation Program is funding 70 percent of this $47 million improvement project. Local funding is being used by the village of Round Lake for the remaining 30 percent.

The public is invited to obtain the latest project information and sign up to receive regular construction updates through the project website at http://www.HartRoadConstruction.com.

Canyon News – Artists Sought For Storm Drain Art - February 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Artists Sought For Storm Drain Art Posted by Alex Nochez on Feb 4, 2014 - 10:05:09 PM

MALIBUThe city is looking for art to place on storm drains for a new public art campaign that began on January 31.

The design will be placed on these inlets.

An artist will be chosen by the city to design and paint a piece that emphasizes the Keep It Clean campaign, as well as environmental consciousness with an approach that will broaden viewer's understanding of the connection between gutters, storm drains, and the ocean while also spotlighting local art, according to announcement on the city's website.

To apply for the project, hopeful artists will need to submit a project approach that includes the design's concept, the estimated timing of the project and the choice of materials, as well as visual representations of what the project will be. A plan for spills and the disposal of dirty water will also need to be included with the project proposal. The actual designs will be painted on the storm drain inlets at Cross Creek Road, Heathcliff Road at Point Dume Shopping Center, on the corner of Morning View Drive and Pacific Coast Highway and at Trancas Park.

The city states in the instructions that the project will be chosen based on the quality of the design and must have a two-year life expectancy. These designs must emphasize the Keep It Clean campaign by including the website for it in the piece. The artist can sign his or her name on the artwork, if they so choose.

While the size of the piece is up to the artist, the city stresses that it must not be placed on the asphalt roadway. Instead, it can be placed on the sidewalk, the inlet lid or gutter. Once the piece is done, a clear sealant that will act as a protector will be placed over the design, and the artist must remain on-site until the protector coat dries.

The chosen design will receive $3,200 that will cover the cost of the project, including supplies, installation and touch-ups, if needed. To apply, submissions must be turned by February 27 at 11:59 p.m. To fill out and submit an application, artists can visit http://malibucity.org/FormCenter/Environmental-Sustainability-Forms-9/Call-to-Artists-72.

For more information, Coastal Preservation Specialist Casey Zweig can be contacted at czweig@malibucity.orgor at 310-456-2489 ext. 236.

How to Install Gutters: The Family Handyman - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Step 1: Planning the project

    1 of 1

Almost all home centers and full-service hardware stores sell gutter systems that are designed primarily for easy installation. But with just a little bit more work, you can use these same parts to put together gutters and downspouts that are stronger and better looking too.

Evaluate and plan the project Installing your own gutters can save you substantially over professionally installed gutters, but there are a few pitfalls to watch out for. Inspect the fascia and soffit (Fig. B) for signs of rotted wood, which will need to be replaced before you put up the gutters. Many houses have a trim board or crown molding nailed to the fascia just under the shingles. Youll have to either remove this as we did or add a continuous strip of wood under it to create a flat plane for the gutters. In either case, prime and paint bare wood before you hang the gutters.

Draw a sketch and measure your house Fig. A shows an example of a gutter system for a typical house. Record the length of the gutter runs and mark the downspout locations. Then count up the inside and outside corners and end caps (note whether they are right or left ends). Measure the height of downspouts and add 4 ft. to each for the extension away from the house at the bottom. Each downspout requires three elbows. There are two types of elbows that turn either to the front or side of the downspout. Most installations require only front elbows, but occasionally you may need a side elbow, usually to turn the downspout extension sideways. Here are a few planning tips:

    Figure B: Mounting details

Measure the horizontal gutter runs and downspouts and identify the parts you'll need.

    1 of 5

Cut the front and back sides with a tin snips. Bend the gutter and cut the bottom.
