GUTTER BUDDY Facilitates Gutter Installation – Designed by InventHelp Client (FED-1384) - September 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PITTSBURGH, PA (PRWEB) September 18, 2014

"I used to be in construction, so I know how difficult it is to install gutters without assistance," said an inventor from Hoquiam, Wash. "In order to solve this problem, I conceived of a helpful tool." He then created a prototype.

The patent-pending GUTTER BUDDY enables a user to install gutters more quickly and easily without the need for assistance. As a result, it saves time and effort, as well as promotes efficiency and productivity. The tool is easy to use and ideal for gutter installers and DIYers.

The original design was submitted to the Seattle office of InventHelp. It is currently available for licensing or sale to manufacturers or marketers. Rain Garden Tour - September 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rain gardens, pollinators, living shoreline twenty-five Erie County Master Gardeners sampled them all last Monday night touring three public gardens in Sandusky.

Bre Hohman, Erie Soil and Water Watershed Coordinator, led the tour. Hohman was instrumental in the gardens designs and installation.

Stop one: Meadowlawn School on Strub Road. The 500-foot rain garden was planted last June as a hands on learning lab to encourage fourth graders in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math. Girl Scout Troop 517 helped with its installation. The purpose of the rain garden is to collect runoff from roofs, parking lots, and sidewalks thus reducing flows that overwhelm our storm sewers and streams. Rain gardens improve water quality in nearby bodies of water by helping with erosion, water pollution, and flooding. Rain from a roofs gutter is directed into the Meadowlawn bowl-shaped area. Some of the plant species include ironweed, iris, sedum, coneflowers, gazing star, and asters which create a succession of blooms from spring through fall. They also attract pollinators. A recent garden addition is milkweed, the host plant for the Monarch butterfly. Pavers allow students to immerse themselves in the plantings and collect data such as rainfall totals, drainage times, and soil temperatures. The students learn to analyze the data and share it with others.

Stop two: Living Shoreline Demonstration Garden, Shoreline Drive. One of the citys greatest assets is the water yet often it is difficult to wiggle your toes in it. Hohman said that ESWCD partnered with ODNR, local volunteer groups including the Friends of Pipe Creek Watershed and the Friends of the Sandusky Greenhouse, and others to grow and plant the switch grass and little blue steam that are among the varieties that serve to stabilize the shore. Hohman says that when the water is low, visitors to Shoreline Park will be able to walk at the waters edge among the grasses. She added that many of the Canada geese have moved on, taking with them their green tootsie roll droppings and allowing park visitors to spread out blankets and enjoy the scenery. Algal blooms have decreased and future plans for the park include a floating wetland raft to encourage greater diversity of wildlife.

Stop three: Venice School on Venice Heights Boulevard. The rain gardens at the school provide similar educational experiences for Sandusky students as the Meadowland project. Hohman said the planting at Venice School was trickier though. Augers were necessary to penetrate into the heavy clay soils. Water runoff comes from a parking lot. The Venice garden, which is more than double the size of the Meadowlawn project, incorporates shrubs into its design, includingviburnum and variegated dogwood. New England asters, monarda Fireball, blue flag, coreopsis Moonbeam, iris, spiderwort, pink flag, and milkweed are some others. Hohman says that the garden has proved so successful that plans are being made to establish a channel from an adjoining parking lot to also drain into the area. Students often check the garden and collect data several times a day after a storm, taking measurements to see how quickly the water is percolating into the soil.

The three Sandusky gardens are beautiful. They are exciting. They are training our students to become better stewards of the land, and they can help us learn more, too. Spread the word. Visit the gardens.

Master Gardener Juanita Fenton caught Bres passion and enthusiasm. It gave me an idea for an area in my garden. My wheels are turning!

My wheels are turning, too, and I think that lots of Erie County Master Gardeners wheels are turning. What a fun night!

Construction on storm sewer line begins today - September 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Other news

Construction on the installation of a storm sewer line to accommodate future work on the rehabilitation of Grove Street in Stephenville is set to start today.

Shawn Boyd of Boyd and Bungay Construction Limited said with the arrival of concrete components from Central Pre-Cast Ltd. of Lewisporte on Thursday, the company can now move ahead with construction.

The pipes for the project arrived earlier and are located in several sections near where they will be laid.

Council approved the awarding of a contract at its regular general meeting on Aug. 28 for the first phase of the work to Boyd and Bungay Construction Limited in the amount of $609,066.56.

This phase does not involve the actual rehabilitation of Grove Street, but rather the running of a new storm sewer line that will extend from near the intersection of West Street and Queen Street up to the end of Princess Avenue.

Mayor Tom OBrien said where the line will cross Queen Street and Prince Rupert Drive and run up Princess Avenue, some disruptions to traffic can be expected.

At the regular general meeting of Stephenville town council this past Thursday, OBrien and town clerk Carolyn Lidstone authorized the signing of an agreement between the Department of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs and the Town of Stephenville for these upgrades with approved funding of $742,581 to be cost-shared on an 80/20 provincial-municipal basis.

This storm sewer line is needed to handle the runoff on Grove Street. The future second phase will involve a full rehabilitation of Grove Street, including new water and sewer lines, storm sewer, curb and gutter, along with paving and sidewalks.

Humans of the U - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In the spirit of Humans of New York, we decided to try our hand at Brandon Stantons craft. We walked around the Us campus, looking for people with a story to tell. And this is what we found.

It started with an awkward silence.

Alyssa Claerhout, a sophomore, said This is like one of the most awkward first dates. You totally know what Im talking about though. Just like, whats your favorite color?

    What are you studying?

Yeah Oh! I thought you were that was another [one of those questions].

    Well it is, but . . .

Im thinking multidisciplinary design with a minor in math because I like the creative side, but I also like the challenging math side.

Not that many people like math. What makes you like it?

Work to start Monday on Sherman stormwater project - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Starting next week, Fort Morgan residents should expect traffic disruptions along South Sherman Street, as construction work begins on a storm drainage project, according to a city news release.

The stormwater project and its related delays and closures are expected to continue through at least Oct. 31.

Work will start Monday, Sept. 8, on the project, which will construct a storm drainage system along five blocks of South Sherman. The project is part of the city's storm drainage master plan and resulted from a drainage study and design completed for the south quadrant of the city in 2011.

The project is scheduled to commence at the southern end of the project area and move northward in phases, the news release stated.

The stretch of Sherman Street from Morgan County Road Q.7 ("Lover's Lane") to Southridge Road will be the first area closed to through traffic. That section of the road is scheduled to be closed for approximately two weeks, and the work will then shift north to the next section.

Only local traffic will be permitted in the project area, and detours will be through surrounding residential areas, according to the news release. Motorists are advised to plan ahead to avoid the area of South Sherman and use alternate routes. Traffic control and detour signage will be in place throughout the project.

Meanwhile, the expected closure of Ensign Street to complete resurfacing of that road has been postponed until late September, according to the news release.

Because of the volume of concrete under the roadway on Ensign that must be removed before repaving, that phase of the project is expected to take four to five weeks much longer than a simple paving project.

With the Fall Harvest Car Show and the Pedal the Plains bicycling event scheduled for Sept. 19-21, the Ensign project was moved back to avoid having construction ongoing so close to downtown during those events.

The plan now calls for the Ensign work to resume on the Monday after the car show, Sept. 22.
