School board election race shapes up - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

All four Marysville school board incumbents whose terms are up for election this spring have filed their candidacy, and one challenger has entered the race.

Incumbents who have filed are board president Sonya Stohs, Position 1; Betty Temple, Position 2; Todd Milner, who holds Position 3; and Kevin Samuelson, Position 7. Lanny Carpenter, a former school counselor, filed Monday for Position 2.

Todd Frye, incumbent Ward 4 Marysville City Council member, filed for re-election.

The city and school election will be April 7. The candidate filing deadline is noon Jan. 27.

    Sonya Stohs

Stohs, who is board president, is seeking her third four-year term. She said she filed for re-election to continue to work with the current administration, fellow board members, teachers and staff to bring to reality our vision, mission and goals for the district.

She said that in the last six months the district has applied and been accepted into the Coalition of Innovative Districts, using ACT Aspire as the testing tool to measure student performance; has seen the installation and upgrade of security and camera systems in all buildings; and is working to implement 1:1 technology in all schools by spring 2016.

Great things are happening but we have hard times and decisions to make now and in the future, and I feel that I can continue to be a true asset in turning our goals into reality, Stohs said.

She said she wants to continue building on the foundation that the school district and its current school board has laid.

We as a district have a goal to have our children college and career ready when they walk across the stage and receive their diploma. In order to do this we need to continue to work as a team and think outside of the box. I am a member of the finance committee, and we are moving forward working with the superintendent in being a fiscally sound district by collecting and reviewing of data to make sure we are being as efficient with taxpayer dollars as we can while providing the highest quality of education to our students.

Lemon Grove seeks improved sidewalks - January 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

LEMON GROVE Strapped for cash for infrastructure improvements, Lemon Grove has been seeking innovative, cost-saving ways to fix existing sidewalks and bring more sidewalks into several of the city's corridors.

The Lemon Grove City Council on Tuesday shared ideas about how residents and the city might work together to make it safer to traverse city streets.

Also, City Manager Graham Mitchell offered, there is "anecdotal evidence that homes with sidewalks tend to have higher values."

One idea the City Council considered was a neighborhood assessment district, which would ask property owners to pay for sidewalk improvements over 10 to 20 years. A matching incentive from Lemon Grove could be added to the program, City Manager Graham Mitchell told the council.

Another idea was to require participation only if an entire section of a street segment agreed to participate. A third possibility was to offer no- or low-interest rate loans to property owners to finance the sidewalk installations. Loans could be paid over a five- to 10-year period. The city could also offer a matching incentive to encourage the installation of larger sections.

"As we look (at options) the first step has to be coming up with the money," City Councilman Jerry Jones said. "As we begin to crawl out of this recession, there is some opportunity to re-prioritize how we spend the increase in revenues."

Lemon Grove resident John L. Wood said that while "curbs and sidewalks are definitely needed in this town," he didn't think people in the city would want to pay for the maintenance of the sidewalks once they were put in.

"The city putting sidewalks in is fine, but I'm not going to be (held) responsible," Wood said.

Most of Lemon Groves housing development occurred before the citys 1977 incorporation, when the county managed the growth and development standards for housing. The county required sidewalk installation in the majority of its housing developments, but even to this day, many Lemon Grove neighborhoods do not have sidewalks.

During the preparation of the city's last General Plan update in 1996, Mitchell wrote in a report, "this was an issue of community debate some community members pushed for sidewalks while others wanted to maintain a rural feel by not installing sidewalks."

K-9 unit gives demonstration at school - December 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

K-9 unit gives demonstration at school

La Habra police Cpl. Nick Baclit, Officer Amsony Mondragon and canine Prinz recently conducted a K-9 unit demonstration for students at Meadow Green Elementary School.

The demonstration was requested by La Habra resident Amy Hoffman, who is a longtime supporter of the La Habra Police Department canine program and whose son is a student at the school.

After the demonstration, Baclit, Mondragon and Prinz posed for pictures with several Meadow Green students, and, understandably, Prinz was the star of the show.

For more information about the LHPD canine program or to learn how you can lend your support, contact the Police Department at 562-383-4300.

The countys Public Works Department will soon begin a project to repave a short stretch of North Palm Street between Brookdale Avenue and Madonna Lane.

This portion of North Palm Street is in an unincorporated county island.

Expected to last about 30 working days (depending on the weather), the project is scheduled to begin Monday. The project includes removal of the existing pavement, raising the street grade, installation of curb/gutter/sidewalks and street paving.

To learn more about the project, contact the county agency during normal business hours on weekdays at 714-667-8800.

It is with sadness and a heavy heart that I report the recent passing of three people who were part of the extended La Habra Family.

Drainage, sidewalk expansion and budget dominate Edgerton Council meeting - December 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Edgerton City Council met on Wednesday, Dec. 3, spending the majority of the meeting discussing the storm sewer near Mechanic Street, the placement of sidewalks on Fourth Avenue and Mill Street, and the citys proposed budget for 2015.

    Mechanic Street storm sewer

How to fix the storm sewer near Mechanic Street has been a point of contention between the Edgerton City Council and city residents since excessive rains in early summer.

Council members Jerry Brink and Jason Snyder met with residents Mike Hoover and Kathy Matson after last months meeting to move the process toward a solution. The two tentatively came to an agreement for the installation of an easement, though pricing for the easement will still have to be worked out between the city and property owners.

The conversation continued with David Hulstein, future member of the 2015 Edgerton City Council offering potential solutions.

Hulstein said he took a laser out and shot elevations of the area and came up with a resolution. He recommended putting in a curb and gutter behind Leland Tinklenbergs building and continuing behind Larry Van Dykes property. The curb and gutter would catch all the water running off the buildings in the area, Hulstein said.

The council said it was appreciative of Hulsteins input and intended to work with property owners to come to an agreeable decision. Brink stated that he and Snyder would meet with Van Dyke and Tinklenberg to continue the discussion. Both Van Dyke and Tinklenberg agreed that the ideas presented were a good start to fixing the problem.

The way I look at it, anything is going to help, Van Dyke said.

    Sidewalk expansion

The council continued the meeting with a discussion about the continued expansion of sidewalks on Fourth Avenue and Mill Street. Area property owners who would be affected by the improvement attended the meeting to ask questions.
