Sound Transit announcement.
Crews will install electrical wires over both sets of tracks on N. 1st Street, continuing in the Stadium curve and on Stadium Way to the traction power substation (between S. 4th St. and Division Ave.) this week. To minimize impacts to businesses and the travelling public, this work will happen at night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and last about four weeks. This wire work is relatively quiet. The wire work is a rolling operation, and will move from one place to another quickly along the route. N. 1st St. will be closed in both directions from Yakima Ave. to the crosswalk, and Stadium Way will close southbound to the traction power substation at night. Parking will not be available in these areas at night.
Crews continue building the Tacoma General Station and the curb and gutter work on the east side of MLK Jr. Way from 6th Avenue to S. 3rd St. Access is open to hospitals, medical centers and the emergency department. To access Tacoma General and the Emergency Department, follow MLK Jr. Way north from 6th Avenue or south from Division Ave. To access Kaiser Permanente, follow S. J St. to S. 3rd St. Please allow a little extra time to reach your appointment thank you. MLK Jr. Way is closed northbound to thru-traffic from 6th Ave. to S. 3rd St. The travelling public should follow the detour on S. J St.
Crews continue installing curb and gutter on the west side of MLK Jr. Way from S. 13th St. to S. 16th St. and on the north side of Division Avenue from MLK Jr. Way to Yakima Ave. The block on MLK Jr. Way from S. 13th St. to S. 14th St. will be completed this week. In addition, crews are installing signals in the Broadway/N. 1st St. intersection tonight and at the MLK Jr. Way/Division Ave intersection this week at night. Two-way traffic on MLK Jr. Way and Division Ave is maintained in these areas.
Looking ahead, crews will install station finishes at the St. Joseph Station, starting next week.

Opening the anchor-locker hatch and taking a look inside gives you great insight into the quality of a boats build. Courtesy Regulator Marine
Its hidden away under a hatch at the bow, but whats inside can say a lot about your boat. Of course, there are certain things to look for in an anchor locker to help the stowed anchor inside do its job, but it also can reveal much about the quality of your boats construction. Take a look inside the anchor locker shown here, from a Regulator 41, to get an idea of what to look for in a quality build.
Gas-assisted struts or shocks that hold open the hatch are essential for keeping your hands free to work the anchor. The last thing you want in rough seas is to have one hand holding up the hatch while you work inside the locker.
A gasketed hatch ensures a snug fit with the anchor locker and helps prevent rattling or pounding while underway. It also helps prevent water intrusion into the locker from the deck.
The gutter around the lockers opening prevents water intrusion from the deck, and the two drains help the water quickly exit so that it doesnt collect. Pooling water in an anchor locker can cause mildew and damage the anchor line.
Note how Regulator made a cutaway in the locker to access the anchor rode. This is essential to manage any issues with the anchor chain or kinks inthe line that can jam up the works, particularly when dealing with an electric windlass.
Every anchor locker, whether it has a windlass or requires manual deployment of the anchor, should have a chain stop to hold the anchor in place while its being stowed so that it doesnt accidentally cut loose and drop under the boat while youre running.
Not every boat has this, but the Regulator 41 installs a washdown hose in the anchor locker so that you can rinse dirt and debris off the anchor rode and the anchor itself as you haul it in or it gets weighed by the windlass.
While a boat without a windlass can still possibly have a high-quality anchor locker, having one properly installedas shown heresure makes life easier when youre on the water.
Installing a windlass remote allows you to work the anchor from the bow if needed.
Regulator installs a small LED in the anchor locker to help you see inside in low-light conditions.
While many boats still employ a pulpit at the bow of the boat, a lot of high-end builders now fit the bow with a through-stem anchor roller that stows the hook in place at the bow externally. This equipment keeps the anchor and rode out of sight and allows for cleaner lines. This setup also prevents the anchor-rode line from chafing your gunwale topside at the bow.
The hatch on the Regulator is finished, gelcoated fiberglass on both sides, as is the anchor lockers interior, a sure sign of high-quality construction.
Read Next: Remote Anchoring
Looking at a boat as well-built as the Regulator 41, you wont find any rough, unfinished fiberglass when you lift the hatch. You also wont find any exposed, sagging or sloppily run wiring in the anchor locker.

Homeowners need to take extra steps to protect their homes during the colder months, as the ice, wind and rain can wreak havoc at winter time.
Leaf Home, a home solutions provider, recently offered the following winter checklist for homeowners to protect their properties against seasonal damage.
It turns out that winter protection all starts with the guttering. As such, Leaf Home advises to keep those gutters clean by removing leaves and other debris that may get trapped inside them, as well as any birds nests! Homeowners should also ensure their guttering is still in good condition, as its common for underlying problems to first appear in the winter time.
If the guttering is left unkempt, it can cause ice dams that may eventually damage it. The problem is that the build up of ice gets increasingly heavier, pulling at gutters until they start to break. Some gutter guards can actually make the ice dams worse, so its important to keep an eye out if the home has any. Leaf Home says ice dams can be prevented by boosting ceiling and roof installation, sealing electric cables and vent pipes and proactively fixing cracks in the chimney flashing.
Its also important to ensure the gutters are the right fit for the house. If its not the right sort, it will be easier for weather to damage other spaces through them. This is particularly a concern in older homes, so its important homeowners assess this before trouble appears.
Besides the guttering, another important task is to conserve energy in the home by ensuring that the outdoor climate stays where its supposed to be outside. The main points of entry for those chilly drafts that can suck all the heat out of a home are the windows and doors. Leaf Home recommends checking for holes in screens, making sure the windows are the correct choice for the regions climate, and adding window film or insulation.
Last but not least, Leaf Home reminds homeowners that one of the main dangers in winter can be black ice on the driveway and on ramps. So its a good idea to shovel off that snow or put salt down to ensure no-one can slip or fall while using them.

A building in Wyandanch that serves both veterans and the community at large is about to undergo some major renovations.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 361 building at 30 William St. has been deteriorating for years, said Kenneth Woods, 53, commander of the post. The prefabricated building, originally a library, was constructed in 1972 and was donated to the VFW after the group incorporated in 1983.
Roughly 15 of the 45 members meet at the building monthly to go over topics such as benefits for veterans, as well as plan community fundraising efforts. The post also uses the building for local charity work, such as a recent Thanksgiving turkey dinner giveaway and a Christmas Toys for Tots drive.
But to keep the lights on, aside from member donations, the building must be rented out to the community for parties and events, Woods said.
"Its really the only way we can make money," he said.
That has become increasingly difficult since the pandemic started in 2020, Woods said, with the number of rentals falling from two to three a month to one every two months. Making things more difficult has been the buildings appearance, he added.
"It does not look like any other VFW on Long Island," said Woods, a retired Army first sergeant. "Through the years its just not been appealing. The floors are caving in, the lights are not up to proper standards."

The VFW filed an application through the Town of Babylon to seek federal Housing and Urban Development funds and the town has hired Austin Interiors Inc. of Smithtown to do the work for $292,000.
The company is tasked with replacing the floor, ceiling and doors, renovating bathrooms and installing updated fixtures, putting in emergency exit lighting and new smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fixing the roof and installing new gutters. The work will begin within the next two months and should take about two to three months to complete, said town spokesman Kevin Bonner.
"Many times I would kind of be embarrassed," Woods said of visitors seeing the building. "I can finally feel good about people coming to our post now."
Members will have to fundraise to address problems not covered by the HUD money, such as fixing the parking lot and adding a wheelchair-accessible ramp, Woods said.
Norman Sellers, 53, a Gulf War Navy veteran and former commander of the post, said hes hopeful the renovations will allow members to further meet the needs of those in Wyandanch.
"Were comrades who serve with pride whether in or out of uniform," he said. "We want to do more in this community."

The end of Arctic air and warming temps this weekend will start a freeze-thaw cycle that could wreak havoc with your roof.
ST PAUL, Minn. The end of an extended Arctic blast featuring sub-zero temperatures for days on end should be something to celebrate, right?
Not if you're a roof in Minnesota.
A warming trend should push temps up above freezing this weekend during the daytime hours, while at night they drop back down into the single digits or teens. The ensuing freeze-thaw cycle is a classic recipe for ice dams, a winter phenomena that can cause significant damage to both the exterior and interior of your home.
The Minnesota Department of Commerce says contrary to the beliefs of some, ice dams are not caused by roofing, ventilation or gutter problems. The real culprit is inadequate air sealing inside the home - gaps around plumbing vents, electrical wires, chimneys, etc. - that allows warm, moist air to escape into the attic. Once there, it melts the underside of the snow layer on the roof, causing water to run down shingles until it reaches a cold spot, where it freezes.
Over time, that ice can build up into a dam that stops water from running down the roof slope, causing it to pool and eventually seep into the home. The resulting damage to insulation, ceiling drywall and other areas can cost thousands of dollars in repair.
Once an ice dam builds up to the point it is causing interior damage, the commerce department says the best option is to hire a professional company that will remove it using steam. Doing it yourself most often involves getting up on a slippery roof, unadvisable at best and downright dangerous at worst.
Because the primary cause of ice dams is warm air leaking from the attic, commerce department experts say the best way to prevent ice dams from forming is to seal leaks with caulking or expanding spray foam.
A home energy audit, especially one that uses an infrared camera, can locate where warm air is escaping into your attic. An audit can be performed by your local utility provider, a non-profit energy group or local heating and air company.
You can also add a layer attic insulation installed to a minimum of R-50.
For more on the cause of ice dams and potential solutions, check out a dedicated pageon the Minnesota Department of Commerce website.

Mason from Denver writes, What's driving you crazy? The intersection of Downing and Louisiana, at the corner of Wash Park. If traveling East on Louisiana and wanting to turn left heading north on Downing, you run into an issue with cars turning right in their own turn lane. However, westbound Louisiana has a separate turn lane for going North with a Yield sign. Is this sign to yield to people turning left on eastbound? Stuck in a turn lane.
That busy intersection on the southwest side of Washington Park is going through a transformation. It is part of Denvers goal to modify traffic flow and increase pedestrian/bicyclist safety as they access recreation activities in Washington Park.
Denvers Department of Transportation and Infrastructure installed new traffic signals that hang on new signal poles at this intersection. They also made major infrastructure and utility upgrades. That was one phase of the changes. The other change you will see is in those turns you mentioned. Once construction is complete this spring, the westbound right turn traffic will have a dedicated lane. The 60-foot-long turn lane is already carved out and paved, but new striping needs to be completed.
The yield sign located at that right turn lane is to make sure drivers yield to pedestrians who are crossing. Those right-turning drivers are also supposed to yield to the vehicles traveling northbound on Downing past Louisiana. DOTI tells me the drivers turning left from eastbound Louisiana to northbound Downing must yield to oncoming traffic, including the vehicles turning right. To help with that turn, the city added a northbound left turn green arrow.
MORE: Read more traffic issues driving people crazy
There is still work left to do at that intersection. DOTI crews are still working to rebuild the curb and gutter around the signal. They also need to finish the improvements to the sidewalks that are much wider and easier to use. That work will be complete when the weather warms up this spring.
The improvements to this intersection are just one part of many improvements along the Downing Street corridor on the west side of Washington Park. You can read about them from Denvers Downing Pedestrian Crossings & Speed Study.
