Protecting Your Foundation
Controlling the flow of rainwater runoff from your roof is an important part of protecting your home. Soil expandswhen it absorbs water, and contracts when it dries out. The shape of your roof causes more rainwater to run off on some sides of your home than others, causing the soil to expand unevenly. This uneven expansion and the resulting contraction is the leading cause of foundation damage.
Another issue caused by rainwater runoff is splashback. As the falling water hits the ground, it impacts and displaces the soil at the base of your home. This harms any plants you might be growing and throws dirt onto the siding of the building. It also creates a depressed area in the ground where water can collect and stand. This is called ponding. The standing water is unattractive and attracts insects like mosquitos, termites, ants, and roaches.
Rain gutters take the rainwater runoff from your roof and transport it away from your foundation, so the soil can expand evenly and your landscape can remain intact. They can also help you save and reuse all that water, helping you maintain your landscaping during a drought without running up your water and sewer bill.
Foundation repaircan be expensive. Rain gutters are not. Aseamless rain gutter system may only be a fraction of the repair cost.
Being proactive can save you from costly and tiresome repairs later. Would you rather spend a few days repairing your foundation, or a few hours having rain gutters installed?
We will come to your home and provide a free detailed in-home estimate for all of your gutter and exterior carpentry needs. Book online or call and chat with us at 512-410-0290.

In this video, This Old House general contractor Tom Silva shows how to install an efficient rain-handling gutter system.
Aluminum Gutter Installation Steps:1. Measure along the house fascia to determine the length of each piece of gutter.2. Apply a bead of silicone sealant along the inner edge of an aluminum end cap. Tap the end cap onto the end of the gutter, then secure it with a crimping tool.3. Cut the gutter to length using a hacksaw and tin snips.4. Fasten pre-mitered aluminum corner to the gutter end using sealant and aluminum pop rivets.5. Attach an end cap to the second length of gutter, then rivet it to the mitered corner to create the L-shaped gutter assembly.6. Use a hole saw to drill a 3-inch-diameter hole through bottom of the gutter. Attach an outlet fitting to the hole using sealant and rivets.7. Hold the L-shaped gutter assembly in place against the house fascia.8. Use a level as a straightedge to position the high end of the gutter. Be sure the front edge of the gutter doesn't protrude above the roof plane.9. Slip a gutter-mounting bracket into the high-end of the gutter, then drive a screw through the bracket and fascia and into a rafter tail.10. Adjust the pitch of the gutter so that rainwater will drain down to where the downspout will be installed.11. Slip brackets into the gutter and drive the screws through the brackets and into the rafter tails. Place one bracket at each rafter tail.12. Place two elbows onto the upper end of a length of downspout, and secure them with short sheet-metal screws.13. Screw two aluminum wall brackets to the house corner boards.14. Slip the elbow on the upper end of the downspout over the outlet fitting protruding down from the gutter above.15. To hold the downspout in place, drive short sheet-metal screws through the wall brackets and into the downspout.16. Dig a shallow trench from the lower end of the downspout out away from the house. 17 Use PVC primer and cement to assemble a rainwater drainpipe made from 4-inch-diameter PVC pipe and assorted fittings.17. On one end of the drainpipe attach an elbow and rectangular downspout fitting. On the other end, glue on an elbow and drainage cap.18. Slip the bottom end of the downspout into the rectangular downspout fitting attached to the end of the PVC drainpipe.19. Lay the drainpipe in the trench, then backfill.

Rain gutters and downspouts are essential tools that are used to divert and carry rainwater away from the foundation of your house. They help to prevent soil erosion, damage to siding, and basement leaks. It is essential that gutters are measured, pitched, and installed correctly in order to function properly. Gutter installation is a job that many homeowners can tackle on their own with a little effort and the proper tools. Read the article below for instructions on how to install gutters.
Method 1

Method 2

3
Then, locate the ending point, or the downspout location, of the gutter run. This will be at the corner of a fascia board, and may include one downspout being fed by two different gutters.
4
5
Snap a chalk line between the high and low points. Use a level or a measuring stick to try to get an even line. This will be a guidepost for your gutters, so it helps to be precise.
Method 3
1
Cut the gutters to size. Use a hacksaw, or heavy duty tin snips to cut the gutter at the appropriate measurement. You may need to cut your gutters at a 45 degree angle if two gutters meet at a corner.
2
3
Mark the location for the downspout opening on the gutter. Use a jigsaw to cut a square opening at the appropriate place in the gutter.
4
Attach the downspout connector and end cap to the gutter using silicone sealant and short metal screws. An end cap should be used on any open-ended run of gutter.
5
6
7
8
Seal any gutter connection seams with a heavy bead of sealant and allow to dry overnight.
Question
What if my facia angles into the house instead of straight down?
Justin Kirkman
Community Answer
Figure out the angle and cut wood blocks. Use wood that's the same size as the facia. (If it's 2x6 facia, use 2x6 material and install it two feet apart on the facia.) An easy way to find the angle is to sit a block of wood against the outside of the facia and hold a level until the block is plumb; then, trace the line.

When it comes time to installing or replacing gutters, its important to refer to a specialist to get good advice. Several options are available, depending on the area where the home is located, its style, your budget and your tastes.
The primary role of gutters is to prevent water infiltration. Gutters collect water dripping on the roof and channel it away from the home. Without a gutter system, water will fall near the foundations, thus increasing the risk of water infiltration. Furthermore, without gutters, water will fall heavily and ruin flowerbeds.
Several types of fasteners are available in order to keep gutters attached to the home. Several options are available to you, depending on the roof type and its requirements. These are the major types of fasteners.
Nails are a basic attachment system and are especially used for fastening aluminum gutters. Its the most economical solution, but its major disadvantage is that it leaves rust lines with time, as well as being visible on gutters.
The spaced hanger is another popular alternative and its main advantage is that it is invisible from the ground. Although more expensive than nails, it offers a more attractive look to the gutter.
Equivalent to spaced hangers including an integral screw, this type of hanger is much easier to install, and is also invisible from the ground.
Slightly more expensive, the continuous hanger is the most solid fastening system out there. It protects the gutter from the weight of snow and ice. In addition, as it closes the gutter, it decreases the amount of maintenance required to clean the eavestrough in order to prevent clogs that cause water infiltration.
Gutters can be made from many different types of materials. Depending on the robustness desired and especially the desired style, several options are available on the market.
Copper is very durable and rust-resistant, and is the preferred choice for owners of old homes. However, this option is more costly and it must be taken into consideration that the color becomes dull and greenish with time.
Galvanized steel, which is a lot more affordable, is less attractive and ends up rusting; however, it is robust and durable.
Aluminum is the most popular material and very versatile since it is available in numerous colors, and several profiles and widths.
Vinyl gutters are generally chosen for their low cost; however, vinyl is not very resistant to intense cold in addition to losing its luster or changing color due to exposure to the sun.
When the time comes to select gutters to be installed in a home, we must ask whether we want seamless or sectional gutters. However, you might not have a choice depending on the material you choose for your gutters. Sectional gutters can often leak if they are not properly sealed. Furthermore, seamless gutters offer a more finished look. In addition, seamless gutters are installed by a professional, whereas sectional gutters are available in hardware stores or can be used by an installer, in the case of certain materials.
You can install the gutters yourself instead of using the services of a professional installer; however, some options are only available to professionals. In addition, installing them is not an easy task, so youd better be prepared. You must pay attention to the slope so that water flows properly and doesnt remain stagnant, because if this is the case, the risk of water infiltration increases.
In order to reduce required gutter cleaning and prevent blockages that cause water infiltration, its possible to install gutter guards. Several gutter guard models can be installed to prevent debris from entering the gutter system, and this will also allow water to be properly drained. Depending on your needs and the environment surrounding your home, one of the installers from this list can direct you to the leaf guard that best suits your needs.

Gutter installation
If youre thinking about installing and hanging gutters yourself, be careful. There are plenty of mistakes to be made. Improperly installed gutters can damage your house or even put your safety at risk in the wrong situation. Here are the five most common gutter mistakes, and how to avoid them:
There are a wide variety of gutter materials, sizes, styles, and gauges. Each has its benefits and drawbacks, but choosing the wrong one can be a nightmare. Choose the most durable material you can afford, and talk with your contractor or hardware store about roof shingle size and what width of gutter is right for your house. Standard residential homes typically use K style aluminum gutters, 5 or 6 inches wide from side to side, but if you live in a particularly rainy climate or looking for a different style gutter, other choices are available like round aluminum gutter . The gauge of a gutter is equally important, standard is 26 gauge but we recommend that you go with 32 gauge to be safe, particularly in regions that have extreme weather events (snow/ice, heavy rains, etc.)
Gutters may look perfectly even, but its a carefully crafted illusion. Gutters actually have a slight pitch that allows water to flow towards the downspouts, generally one to two inches of decline for every forty feet of length. Its very gradual and not noticeable, but it helps sweep away debris and keeps your gutters clean, and allows water to flow to the downspouts without overwhelming them, thus backing up the system. As you mount your gutters, check with a level to make sure theyre at the proper pitch.
All gutters are attached to your house by mounting system or different types of hangers (inside, outside, or strap), and the hangers need to be carefully spaced close together (3 feet or less) to give the gutter proper support. Without the correct support, the rain gutterswill sag. Water will collect in the lower places, tugging at your gutter system, until eventually the whole system will be ripped off your home. If using hangers, space according to instructions, or a bit closer if need be, and your gutters will stay where they belong, sending water to where it belongs.
Water runs down your roof, goes off the edge, so the gutter goes on the edge, right? Simple. And like so many things that seem simple, its actually wrong.
When choosing gutters, consider the material, as well as the size and width needed.
Your gutter needs to be a few inches under the edge of your roof. Why? Physics. If you put a paper towel on a drop of water, the water will be sucked into the fibers (a phenomenon called capillary action). Your roof does the same thing. Water will drip off the very edge of your roof, but also be pulled back up on the underside, and drip out a few inches underneath your roofs edge as well. A permanent solution you should consider is installing drip edge. Drip edge gets installed under the first course of shingles and promotes water to run freely from roof edge down into gutter. Without it, water may run down behind your gutter, down fascia board and siding, leading to potential damage.
Clogged gutters can result in runoff water, which can damage your home and landscaping. Gutter guards can prevent clogs and save you money. Download our free gutter guide
Finally, gutters will need to be welded or soldered together in order to be attached. But plan ahead in your construction to use as few welds as possible. Over time, the material in gutters, especially at the seams, is subjected to extreme temperature, force, and, of course, water. This puts a strain on any connections you solder or weld, and will eventually break the gutter if theyre not checked and touched up occasionally. The seams are the weak point in any gutter system, so treat them accordingly.
Seamless gutters or continuous rain gutters are another option available from contractors in some areas, so we highly recommend you consider having them installed on your home to avoid all the potential problems that welded together gutters can cause overtime.
As you can see, this can be tricky business. Dont go at it alone. Contact us today, a gutter installer wholl do the job right!
