Falls cost Marlborough $5.7 million - August 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

People losing their balance is costing Marlborough $5.7 million with nearly 44,000 days of productivity lost due to falls, ACC figures reveal.

Falls continued to be a major cause of injury, with people tripping over leads or falling off ladders.

Most injuries were in the home, where people felt more secure.

Pete Halligan from Blenheim fell off a ladder two years ago and was lucky to walk away unscathed.

He was cleaning out the guttering on one of his rental properties and was stretching to clear out debris when he fell. "The ladder slipped away because it wasn't secure. I was pushing the limit for how far I could extend myself. I was really really lucky I didn't do myself more injury."

It prompted him to start a safe gutter cleaning business - Gutter Sucker NZ. His employee uses an industrial vacuum cleaner to get leaves and muck out of gutters - from the ground.

People losing balance was the most common cause of injury, while the most common pre-accident activities were recreation or sport.

ACC general manager of injury prevention Megan McKenna said the data would help the Marlborough community prioritise injury prevention. "These reports give us all a snapshot of what's happening at a community level, and we hope they'll help inspire solutions that ultimately enhance people's wellbeing."

Speaking at a Health and Safety Expo at Marlborough Convention Centre on Friday, World Health Organisation Safe Communities judging panellist Geoff Wilson said a five-year analysis of ACC claims showed a downward trend for work injuries, motor vehicle injuries and assaults in Marlborough.

ACC injury claims for people aged 10-18 years had decreased by 43 per cent, compared with 3.4 per cent nationally.

THE AL GILKES COLUMN: When peeing is gross - August 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

IF YOU THOUGHT that Bajan men were the only ones in the world who pull out their dingalings out of their zips and pee wherever the urge hits them, at the side of the road, on a tree, on a paling, in the sea, in a gutter, on the back wheel of a bus, in a sweet potato field in the country or an alley in the heart of the City, think again.

YouTube is currently soaked by thousands of hits for a video, which, as reports indicate, relatesto the fact that urinating in public is also a bighabit and a great a problem in Asian countries, especially India.

They note that its not uncommon to see men urinating on walls, in alleys and on corners. Sounds just like Barbados and so we could probably call ourselves, or they themselves, Barbindians.

The condition, as is in Barbados, particularly Bridgetown, has to do with a lack of public toilets, together with poor understanding of hygiene andpublic decency.

Apparently, many attempts have been made to solve the problem by activists and different organisations, including public campaigns in Delhi, cleaning and painting of walls, and shaming offenders in Rajasthan by drumming and blowing whistles. But those efforts have had little visible impact.

So how can India stop people from urinating in public? Probably through the latest attempt being made in the city of Mumbai where The Clean Indian, an anonymous anti-public urinationactivist group, has rolled out a possible solution to the problem.

If you go on YouTube, there is the video of The Clean Indian in action with what they call theirpissing tanker. The members wear masks and patrol the city on a giant yellow water tanker spraying any and everybody they see urinating in public.

Their action has been greeted with mixed reactions from Indian citizens with many supporting the effort. It has also been highlighted in an article published in the BBC News online magazine and, according to the reports, there have been interesting debates about whether it is a cultural issue rather than hygienic, whether it is a problem and whether people should bother.

So do we in Barbados need a Clean Bajan group driving around in a refurbished old Barbados Fire Service tanker dousing any men caught with theirdoggies out and in hand, letting it flow wherever they feel like?

The only problem I perceive is that on Kadooment Day, when revellers along theroute have little or no alternative but to pee in public, a large number of the people being doused will be female.

It happens every year: Summer seems to last forever, but then the end comes quickly enough to take everyone by surprise. Soon those last few dog days of summer will be upon us, and there will likely be half a dozen (or dozens?) of chores you haven't gotten to yet. Well ,now is the time.

To help you get motivated, here are several DIY project ideas. They are in order from easiest to toughest, so you can choose depending upon your particular brand of summer laziness.

So grab that sunscreen and let's get started.

    Clean up that yard

After a long summer of fun, your backyard is probably looking a little drab. Go beyond picking up the toys and rolling up the hoses. Now is the time to do the heavy work. Those pavers need straightening, the shrubs need mulching, and the fencerow needs a serious cleanup before winter rolls around. Take a few days and clean up your place as though you were going to put it on the market. A major cleanup now makes fall and winter chores easier to handle.

Find a new place to store your stuff

Men In Kilts Launches in the Okanagan Valley - August 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Kelowna, BC (PRWEB) August 11, 2014

Men In Kilts Kelowna opens for business Friday August 15th, 2014 and will be the eleventh location to open since franchising began in 2010 and the third in the province of BC. The franchise will service the communities of Kelowna, Westbank, Vernon, Penticton, Osoyoos, Summerland, Grand Forks and Oliver and offer Window Cleaning, Gutter Cleaning, Siding Cleaning, Pressure Washing and Snow Removal services to residential and commercial customers.

Franchise Owners Gareth Rider and Stacey Steele transitioned into the window cleaning business after spotting their very first tartan truck. Gareth says, Throughout our research into franchises, Men In Kilts kept showing up in our searches. We read a lot of reviews about the franchising opportunities in various publications across North America. We started to see their trucks driving around town all the time and one day while we were on site painting a clients house, I looked out the window and saw Men In Kilts next door cleaning out the gutters - the decision was made!

Gareth and Stacey, now kilted technicians themselves, used to run their own painting company in Calgary, AB, but wanted a change - which included a move to BC - and starting a Men In Kilts franchise allowed them to do that.

Stacey says, Growing our painting business in Calgary came with many hurdles and growing pains. A major one being our marketing and branding needed an overhaul. Men In Kilts provides us with the support we really needed in the areas we were facing troubles with in our previous business; investing in this franchise has been the best thing weve done to date.

Men In Kilts Founder Nicholas Brand is excited that another franchise is opening in the same province where it all started. By opening a third location in BC we are definitely making a name for ourselves on the west coast of Canada and I cant wait to see what happens next. Gareth and Stacey are going to make excellent Franchise Owners and do very well for themselves and the brand.

So far the attention they have received roaming about the Okanagan in their kilts has been great. Rider says, There have been lots of smiles, laughs and questions asking us if we actually clean in our kilts. Naturally, Stacey has been getting a lot of attention because she is a female in a kilt which has sparked many conversations. Stacey's favourite response to that is, Someone has to keep these men in line.

When asked what they are most excited about as they begin their new adventure Stacey says, Were excited about spreading the word and providing the quality service Men In Kilts has to offer to the Kelowna/Okanagan Valley. We cant wait to grow the business and push it to all it can be while bringing smiles to the world....one kilt at a time.

Customers can begin scheduling their services by going to the Men In Kilts website or calling 1-800-777-5458.

All Island Gutter Cleaning of Long Island Lists The Terrible Ten Hazards of Clogged Gutters - August 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Long Island, NY (PRWEB) August 09, 2014

A bunch of twigs or leaves in your gutter may not seem like they could cause much harm to your home, but don't take them lightly. Clogged gutters can lead to many major and expensive house repairs. Here are the top ten problems that may arise if you don't have your gutters professionally cleaned:

    1. Leaking Gutters: The most common problem arising from uncleaned gutters is a leak. Fortunately, they're usually easy to find. But if the leak is not fixed, major damage will occur in due time. Mold and rot can cause the gutter to break away from your home and possibly even fall off completely.

    2. Flooded Basement: Basement water issues down below are often caused by clogged gutters up top. Roof water can overflow and accumulate around the foundation, kicking back into your basement.

    3. Leaking Roof: If your gutter can't effectively maintain the water drainage during the winter months, the moisture will accumulate on the roof and ice overs. During the next thaw, water running off the roof is blocked by the frozen snow and backs up into the house.

    4. Indoor Wall and Ceiling Damage: When that rook leaks and water runoff has nowhere to go, but inside your house, you may encounter serious interior wall and ceiling damage.

    5. Rotted Wood: Some homes have foundations made from wood. Gutters that aren't cleaned force water to accumulate into and saturate your house. Over time the wood will rot, causing possible foundation damage and issues with your home's structure.

    6. Cracked Foundations: Excess water against the foundation wall weakens the footing and leads to cracks, especially in the cold weather. Built-up water at the foundation freezes and causes "frost-heave" which causes severe cracks to foundation walls.

    7. Slippery Sidewalks: Overflowing gutters can leave water on your sidewalk and driveway where it can freeze and cause a potential hazard to you, your family and your guests.

    8. Driveway Damage: Clogged or misdirected gutter spouts can cause your driveway to sag and crack.
