A burglar who used his distribution of leaflets for a gutter-clearing business to target houses to break into was caught after a police officer took his registration number.

And following his arrest Dwain Matthews pleaded guilty at the crown court in Leamington to burgling houses in Kenilworth, Cubbington and Marton.

Matthews, 30, of Tarquin Close, Willenhall, Coventry, who had escaped with thousands of pounds worth of property, was jailed for two-and-a-half years.

Prosecutor Lal Amarasinghe said that in June there were a series of burglaries in rural areas of Warwickshire.

Each time the offenders canvassed the area with leaflets offering a guttering clearing service to identify houses where there was no-one at home.

They would then break in and carry out untidy searches before escaping with jewellery and other property worth thousands of pounds.

In June a Kenilworth family went on holiday, and when they returned they found their home in Mountbatten Avenue had been broken into and jewellery, an i-Pad and an i-Pod had been stolen.

On June 10 the familys neighbours had seen a man in the road handing out leaflets.

And a police officer who was unaware of the burglary at the time, but thought he was acting suspiciously, wrote down the registration number of his vehicle - which was registered to Matthews.

The following day a house in Birdingbury Road, Marton, was broken into and a quantity of jewellery stolen from a womans bedroom, including wedding and engagement rings. The woman, who described her bedroom as having been ransacked, was deeply upset by what had happened and by the loss of the rings, said Mr Amarasinghe.

The second edition of the nationwide cleaning exercise which came off on Saturday, did not receive the expected patronage from the public in some areas of Accra.

The local government Ministry initiated the campaign in November 2014 to rid the country of filth after several hundreds of people contracted cholera and some deaths recorded. Many Ghanaians did not participate in the exercise in November, prompting officials of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to put in more measures to whip up interest in subsequent months.

Public Relations Officer of the Assembly, Nuumo Blafo told Citi News in an earlier interview that the Assembly was dissatisfied with the initial turnout.

Shops were opened while they should be closed and refuse were left on the shoulders of the roads We have added two tipper trucks to collect the filth gathered on the shoulders of the road. We have sent out enough information ahead of the second exercise, he said.

However, Citi News checks on some streets of Accra showed the turnout did not improve.

Citi News reporter Eugenia Tenkorang, who visited some areas in Adabraka in Accra, including Odawna and the Adabraka markets, reported that very few people participated in the national event.

At Odawna, close to the Odawna Clinic, there was only one person, Kofi Sarfo, who was cleaning dirty and choked drains.

Kofi Sarfo had no gloves, boots, nose covers or other protective equipment or cleaning tools.

Accra residents ditch 2nd National Sanitation Day

Hiplife music giants VVIP, made up of Reggie Rockstone, Prodigal and Zeal will lead their fans and friends on National Sanitation Day (NSD), which falls on Saturday December 6, 2014, to clean up drains and other places within Nima and Mamobi after which the group will mount the stage to perform in a live show dubbed 'SANIJAM'.

This was made known to NEWS-ONE when the VVIP trio hosted the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Julius Debrah, and top management staff of Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), SIC Life and PZ Cussons at the Rockstone Office (Django) in Accra.

VVIP and Friends will also provide 'Kooko and Kose' as breakfast for the expected fans and guests who will converge after the clean-up exercise at Nima Gutter, popularly referred to as 'Bakyin Guta'.

Abdul Hamidu Ibrahim, in a speech to welcome the dignitaries, described the National Sanitation Day as an event which brings back exciting memories of the spirit of volunteerism which was a common thing in the past and which enhanced the welfare of mankind.

Ibrahim, whose stage name is 'Zeal', mentioned that communal services in the past were characterised by the presence of drumming and music adding that VVIP and Friends are equally proud to be associates using their talents in music (hiplife) to influence the community of Nima and Mamobi to achieve cleaner and healthier surroundings.

Reginald Osei aka 'Rockstone' was happy that his father, St Osei the great fashion designer, went on hunger strike over the insanitary conditions that prevailed at the Trade Fair area adding that he is happy to walk in the footprints of his father.

The Executive Director of Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), Abdul-Samed Iddrisu, who was present during the event on behalf of the bank, donated a cheque of GH50, 000 as the bank's support for the NSD, while SIC Life presented GH 25,000 and PZ Cusson, represented by Gazie Decker, Head of Brand Development and Activation, presented disinfectants and cleaning agents worth GH20, 000.

Each of the donors expressed satisfaction that the purpose of the NSD was in line with their respective companies' corporate social responsibilities of ensuring that the communities within which they live and work are kept very clean and tidy to ensure the sound health of the people.
