SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
A Savannah man suspected of starting several fires on the city's south side in 2011 was arrested Thursday.
Brian Jerome Powers, 50, was taken into custody after the Chatham County grand jury returned an indictment charging him with more than 12 arson fires in several jurisdictions dating back to 2008.
Powers was charged with first-degree arson in connection with a fire at a laundromat near the intersection of Waters Avenue and Montgomery Crossroads on Feb. 20, 2011. Savannah firefighters responded to four separate intentionally set fires in the 8400 and 8500 blocks of Waters Ave. during a 30-minute period that morning. Three of the fires were set in trash Dumpsters and one was set in the laundromat.
When Savannah firefighters arrived at the laundromat at 8414 Waters Ave. at about 2:20 a.m., they encountered smoke and flames in the rear of the business. After extinguishing the blaze, the firefighters were dispatched to dumpster fires at 8506 Waters Ave. and 8510 Waters Ave. The fires were extinguished without any extension to other building.
According to the 16-count indictment, Powers is also connected to a series of arsons in Pooler and could be connected to other fires.
"Looking up and down the street, there have been gazebos and front yards set on fire, garbage cans next to houses, and we've had two buildings at the Sanctuary Church that caught fire," said Assistant Chief Hugh Futrell with Southside Fire.
Evidence against Powers was presented to grand jurors on Wednesday. He was apprehended on Thursday and is being held at the Chatham County Detention Center.

Rowing is a lifestlye Drew van Bourgondien has happily adopted.
But its not one the 15-year-old originally set out for when she started at St. Andrews Regional School.
I didnt know I was going to be a rower and I can easily say its become part of my life, she said on Sunday afternoon. Coach (Alia Zawacki) has taught us a lot and pushed us hard.
Van Bourgondien watched the final races of the high school city rowing championships at Elk Lake from her teams tent with many of her St. Andrews teammates. Theirs was one of the many collapse-able gazebos that leant a festival vibe to the regatta, and protected rowers and spectators from the rain.
Van Bourgondien won both events she raced in, the junior womens quad and eight. Full results from Nov. 3 and Nov. 4.
It was a great weekend for us, said Zawacki, co-ordinator and head coach of the St. Andrews Rowing Academy. The former five-time national champ with the Vikes built the program herself, and will see many of the crews to nationals this spring.
This is a very young program, our second year, so were particularly excited about winning so many junior (Grade 9 and 10) and Grade 8 events, Zawacki said.
St. Andrews won six of the city championships 25 events one behind overall leader Claremont, the regions other high school rowing academy.
Rowing, it seems, is becoming more popular with the youth of Greater Victoria.
From what I understand, the city rowing league started in the 1980s with about 40 rowers, and its up to 600 now, said Kevin Light, first-year coach of the Claremont rowing academy.

The City of Sonora Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Tuesday for its first conditional-use permit application, following the June passage of a city ordinance allowing residents to construct minor accessory buildings on their properties, according to City of Sonora Community Development Director Rachelle Kellogg.
Keith Designs, a Jamestown company, has applied for a permit on behalf of two Sonora residents who would like to replace an existing structure on their residential property with a 115.5-square-foot gazebo, according to the meeting agenda.
The gazebo will encroach onto the front parcel of the Shepherd Street property by no more than 6 feet, 8 inches.
One of the residents, Tom Aitkin, did not know he was the first applicant when reached Thursday, but said he thinks the city will approve the gazebo.
Im not worried about it, he said.
Applying for the permit costs $325 and requires a public hearing before the Planning Commission at a regular meeting.
The City Council passed the ordinance on June 18, allowing residents to construct temporary minor buildings of no more than 120 square feet within their rear and side yard setbacks on their properties by applying for a conditional use permit. Setbacks are typically about 10 feet from the property line.
Temporary minor accessory structures are defined as gazebos, garden sheds, playhouses, greenhouses and art studios, according to meeting documents.
Garages and carports are governed by a separate city code.

This spectacular display of what looks like a city made made on a giant Lite-Brite is actually the illuminated architecture of an annual memorial in Kobe, Japan. Seventeen years ago, Kobe was ravaged by an earthquake that left the city in darkness. In December of that year, to honor those who died and enliven the devastated city, the Italian government donated enough lights to build a cityscape sparkling with millions of tiny, hand-painted bulbs. The Kobe Luminarienow an annual event that draws in as many as 5M people a yearwas designed by Italian art director Valerio Festi and Kobe native Hirokazu Imaoka to be a show-stopping display of light-up archways, gazebos, and tunnels. Above is the "Citadel of Peace," an illuminated fortress that shames even the most elaborately lit up homes seen in the U.S. While it all looks like a belabored Christmas display, the tribute to the lives lost in 1995 really has nothing to do with the December holiday. Linkin Park Soweto venue 'safe' -
November 10, 2012 by
Mr HomeBuilder
Johannesburg - Extra security and safety checks have been arranged for Linkin Park's Soccer City show on Saturday after an accident outside their Cape Town venue, Stadium Management SA (SMSA) said on Thursday.
"In light of the tragedy at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday night, SMSA has undertaken additional security checks to ensure the utmost safety for all patrons," said the company, which manages their next venue.
A woman died and 18 people were injured when an advertising structure outside the stadium was toppled by wind ahead of the concert. The concert went ahead.
SMSA said it had taken all necessary precautions to ensure a safe show in Soweto on Saturday. The police, flying squad, dog unit, bomb squad, metro police, and paramedics would be in and around the stadium.
Husband considering legal action
SMSA chairman and CEO Jacques Grobbelaar offered condolences to the family of the woman who was killed.
Western Cape government health department spokesperson Mark van der Heever said 18 people were assessed and treated at the scene on Wednesday night.
Of those, 12 patients required hospitalisation and were transported to public and private hospitals by Cape Town's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and private ambulance service, ER24.
The name of the woman who died had not yet been released to the media.
The Cape Argus reported that her husband was considering legal action. It quoted two women who had been doing promotional work, saying gazebos that had been erected earlier had been packed away because of the wind.

MeTee: Tee-Shirt Design in Seconds. - Belmont University is a private, coeducational, liberal arts university located in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. It is the largest Christian university in Tennessee and the second largest private university in the state, behind nearby Vanderbilt University. Belmont Mansion was the home of Adelicia Hayes Acklen Cheatham, a wealthy Nashville socialite, businesswoman and slave owner. Built starting in 1849, it was one of the most elaborate antebellum homes in the South, with 36 rooms and 19000 sq ft (1800 m2) in size. The estate contained an art gallery, conservatories, bowling alley, lavish gardens, aviary, lake and a zoo (which was then subsequently opened to the public). In 1887 Acklen Cheatham sold the estate to a group which intended to develop it into a subdivision, but in 1889 the mansion and 13 acres of its grounds became the home to a women #39;s school run by a Miss Hereon and Miss Hood. This school merged with Ward Seminary in 1913 and was known as Ward-Belmont College, which included both a junior college and college-prep (or high) school for women. Today it is owned by Belmont University but maintained by the Belmont Mansion Association, a non-profit group. The mansion is open for tours and features Victorian art and furnishings. ‘Township tourism a half-baked cake’ -
November 5, 2012 by
Mr HomeBuilder
THE recent launch of the Township Tourism programme was a hurried event, which took place without adequate consultation with some owners of the targeted facilities, The Standard has established. BY JENNIFER DUBE
The government last month launched the programme targeting 13 houses that once belonged to nationalists such as President Robert Mugabe, the late Vice-President Joshua Nkomo, Enos Nkala and George Nyandoro.
Most of the houses, which will be marketed under the township tourism concept, are located in Harares populous suburb of Highfield.
It has emerged that some of the houses are now owned by other people, not even related to the nationalists.
But the government has said it intends to upgrade the former nationalists residencies to national museums under the programme.
Some of the owners of the houses said the organising team only contacted them a few days before the launch of the programme, requesting to pitch up gazebos in front of their houses.
They were only told tourists would be visiting the houses.
Others complained that they felt used after they were not given things they were promised by the organising team.
We feel cheap after that exercise, a daughter of one of the late nationalists said.
They said they wanted to empower families of nationalists and the ordinary person in Highfield, but it has now become clear they were just doing the whole thing for themselves. They could not even come back to say thank you or to give us the T-shirts they promised us. But Nyandoros son, Micheal, was cautious.
