SEVERAL million Italians voted in a run-off primary election yesterday to choose the center-left candidate for prime minister in next spring's national elections.
The contest will decide whether Pier Luigi Bersani, 61, or Matteo Renzi, 37, stands for the Democratic Party (PD) against a still-to-be-chosen center-right candidate to take over from Prime Minister Mario Monti.
Thousands of voting stations, many of them white canvas gazebos on street corners, would close at 8pm and exit polls would be released shortly afterwards.
US-style party primaries are relatively new to Italy and have been welcomed by many as a departure from the past, when the party hierarchy chose the candidate for prime minister.
Most opinion polls say the slow-speaking, bald, professorial Bersani will defeat Renzi, who bounces around platforms at rallies in open shirts and jeans.
More than 3 million supporters of the PD voted in the first round a week ago - which eliminated three other candidates - and a similar number was expected to turn out for the final vote. Some people queued for hours.
Some 100,000 people who didn't vote last week asked to vote yesterday but only some 7,000 requests were accepted since they had what party rules considered legitimate reasons for missing the first round, such as health problems.
While markets are wary of Bersani's alliance with a party called Left, Ecology and Freedom, both men have pledged to continue the budget discipline started by Monti. They would put more emphasis on economic growth as well as easing burdens on workers and pensioners.
Bersani, who says he represents experience, won 44.9 percent of the vote in a first-round on November 25. Renzi, who paints himself as a Kennedy-esque reformer and insists the Democratic Party (PD) needs a big shake-up, took 35.5 percent. Three other candidates divided the remaining votes.
A poll by the SWG organization said Bersani, who is PD leader, would get 53-57 percent in the run-off and Renzi, mayor of Florence, 43-47 percent.

The slow pace and small-town pleasures of Fallbrook, Calif. best known for its avocados and festival celebrating the green fruit can't match the glitz of, well, glitzier destinations. That lack of flash is what's most appealing about this rural outpost in north San Diego County. The ancient oaks of Live Oak Park are waiting to provide shade for a picnic, nurseries that dot the hills are filled with colorful plants to take home, and there are some bright new restaurants known only to locals. C'mon down, sit a spell.
The bed
My husband and I stayed at the Pala Mesa Resort (2001 Old Highway 395; [800] 722-4700, http://www.palamesa.com; weekend rates start at $149-$165). This 1960s-era hotel, on 205 acres, overlooks a golf course. The lobby and restaurant are in front; rooms are at the rear of the property. Guest rooms are basic yet pleasant; some have balconies or patios with nice views. Try to get an executive king, which has more amenities and space. Bridezilla alert: The resort's lovely gardens, waterfalls and gazebos are a magnet for weddings.
The meal
Aqua Terra, overlooking the Pala Mesa Resort golf course, is a cool place for drinks and appetizers. We chose sushi and a baked avocado and topped it off with chocolate martinis. Far funkier was Oink and Moo Burgers and BBQ (121 N. Pico Ave.; [760] 451-6005, http://www.oinkandmoo.com), which recently opened downtown. We ate on the patio, a converted garage, and made, well, pigs out of ourselves. Hand-ground burgers and pulled pork were a messy treat.
The find
Nurseries are big here, and Myrtle Creek (2940 Reche Road; [760] 728-5340, http://www.MyrtleCreekNursery.com) is a standout. It's on an old farm with a 19th century farmhouse, and a visit here feels like a relaxing day in the country. There are plants and trees, of course, but the most fun is wandering through the shops, which feature arts and crafts, vintage kitchen furnishings and plenty of seasonal gifts. Find No. 2: Grand Tradition Estate & Gardens (220 Grand Tradition Way; [855] 728-6466, http://www.grandtraditiongardens.com), a popular wedding venue since 1984, opened to the public this year. You can stroll through gorgeous Mediterranean- and tropical-style gardens, then eat lunch at the newly opened Veranda (reservations are a must) at the back of the Victorian mansion overlooking a heart-shaped lake.
The lesson learned
Most of downtown Fallbrook shuts down on Sunday. Leave time on Saturday to explore the village, a throwback to a kinder, gentler era with historic buildings, shops and two art galleries.

Builtrite Express Portable Buildings
Using the old fashioned, country tradition of barn building, we at Built Rite Express, LLC. create quality storage buildings and gazebos for many happy customers throughout Indiana Kentucky. We use the same traditional construction techniques and philosophies handed down from generation to generation among the many Amish and Mennonite communities in Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia. But make no mistake, you can find our buildings and gazebos in the heart of southern big cities as well as the small towns and farms across the south. The kind of quality, care and attention to detail that we put into each and every one of our barns and gazebos is rarely seen on such a consistent basis in the storage building industry, but we don #39;t stop there. Our overriding philosophy of quality can be seen in our company #39;s culture everyday. From:Jerry ColvinViews:1 0ratingsTime:01:38More inPeople Blogs
