It took Naples officials 25 years to get the proposed Gordon River park off the ground.
Now, after an auction last month raised $5 million to help build it, some citizens are asking Naples City Council to proceed with caution, pointing out part of the Riverside Circle property is an old landfill with high levels of methane and arsenic.
They want more studies, assurances and cost estimates that consider environmental problems before the city proceeds with engineering, architectural and landscaping phases.
On Tuesday, council is expected to discuss a 2004 city study that showed methane in nearly all 12 drilling locations on the property, and a September 2013 filter marsh report that revealed landfill contaminants were leaching into an adjacent marsh, where the city installed a filter to treat stormwater runoff.
A historical landfill that has been documented to have methane gas and arsenic is contaminating the filter marsh to the northwest of the landfill site, said Corey Cabral, a citizen activist who has emailed city officials about his concerns.
This site has a very high risk of settling if developed, said Cabral, a certified general contractor who spent 35 years in development and construction. If the buildings settle, then the foundations crack and they can fail. These cracks also allow methane gas into the buildings.
He noted design professionals suggest light-load, passive uses for landfill properties, such as bike and hiking trails.
They recommend quiet, low-impact things not Disneyland on the Gordon River, he said of the park, which is expected to include a carousel, pavilion, a caf, rock climbing, gazebos, restrooms, a 40-foot hill, lakes and waterfalls.
The Trust for Public Land, a San Francisco-based think tank, estimates at least 4,500 acres of landfills in large cities were successfully turned into parks, ball fields, golf courses, basketball and tennis courts.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protections protocols for building on landfills recommends caution due to unacceptable risks to human health and the environment.

Over the last 10 years people have been moving not so much towards bigger homes, but towards more efficient homes. They want more space, but sometimes getting more space does not mean it is usable space. So just because the house is bigger does not mean it is better. Consumers are looking for houses that have an open floor plan, a new room arrangement and new outdoor living considerations.
"Large homes waste space when the builders do not consider how homeowners use it," a Stone Creek Builders representative said. With the latest home building trends in mind, Stone Creek Builders moves towards more of an open floor plan. "Consumers are demanding size and greater flexibility in meeting their needs. It provides homeowners with the option to go green and use natural construction materials."
Stone Creek Builders can see changes on the first floor, the second floor and new amenities for outdoor living. Great rooms, dining rooms and kitchens are still rooms people want to keep, but make more functional while the traditional living room is out. People are converting living rooms into home offices, the representative said. Large mudrooms and big garages with plenty of storage are also on customer's wish list for the main floor. More people are looking to have their master bedroom on the 1st floor now. They want more privacy away from the kids. Also this gives them the freedom of living in the house longer as they get older. They dont have to move because they can no longer go up the stairs.
They also want to move the laundry room near the master bedroom, even if it means moving it to the second floor, according to the representative. Tray ceilings are in demand in the master bedroom and people do not want vaulted ceilings any more. Bathrooms are changing as well, the consumer wants bigger tile. Grout is out, more natural materials are in. Soaking tubs are not going away but we do see them going away in the smaller homes of favor of a bigger shower.
Outside, the trend is to create living space that offer a lot, in particular an outdoor kitchen. Consumers also want enclosed spaces to relax in summer. "They're asking for fire pits, gazebos, pool houses and front porches," the representative said.Equipping new homes with mudrooms, great rooms and outdoor kitchens. Stone Creek Builders meets consumers demands for smart home technology and going green trends.
Those are some of the trends that Stone Creek Builders has seen from their customers throughout the past 10 years that are staying. We feel that going green is going to be the biggest thing happening in the building industry over the next 10 to 20 years, the representative said. People want smart home technology. They are trying to live cleaner and want their homes to reflect that.

A fishy affair! -

There are some restaurants in Delhi which are always on top of the list of couples because of their ambience rather than their food. One such place is Lodhi The Garden Restaurant. Private gazebos, candlelight and pleasant greenery around makes the milieu quite romantic.
I am a regular at the restaurant, but this time I am here specifically to explore the ongoing Seafood Fiesta that features Chef Elam Singhs selected dishes. However, I find the menu very selective and rather disappointing, as it hardly offers any seafood except five variants of fish. All my cravings for a bite of juicy crab or a tender lobster are fated to remain just cravings. Nevertheless, I gamely start with a bouillabaisse soup with seafood in a garlic broth. Though it is pretty decent, it didnt come piping hot, which brings its taste down to just about average. The bread served along with it is crisp and perfect, which lifts the experience though. Following it up with fritto misto as the only option in starters makes sense an assorted seafood basket with calamari, fish and prawns. The fish is fluffy and crisp but the prawns are overdone and chewy. The calamari goes well with the remoulade though.
Through with the platter quickly, I test out the six listed main course dishes one by one. The chef starts with a herb crusted cod fillet with potato gratin. The fillet is bland, hardly has any flavours. Surprisingly, the potato gratin tastes much better than the fish.
The roasted snapper in a herb emulsion competes with the cod in being bland. I am somewhat at a loss to understand how the chef is not able to serve fish that is well marinated. The reason might be the packed restaurant even on a Tuesday night, but still, when they are paying a good amount at a restaurant, the food should be good too.
After the two fish preparations come the char-grilled prawns in a North Indian style. Seasoned with Indian spices and served with the traditional mint and coriander chutney, the prawns are a relief. Tender and juicy, and grilled almost to perfection. But the one dish which is really good and makes my visit worth it is the chimichurri tuna steak. Nice subtle flavours and good influence of chimichurri sauce make every bite a delight.
Sadly, though I go there after reserving a table and also the dishes to be served, the chef tells me that salmon is sold out for the day.

Cheaper stall rents are among a new clutch of incentives aimed at boosting north Norfolks struggling street markets.
To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has announced the measures in the hope that they will help regular traders and encourage new ones at the markets it manages in Sheringham, Cromer and Stalham.
In recent years all three have seen a fall in the number of market traders attending and, in Stalhams case, there is now only one regular stallholder, selling burgers.
The council wants to try and ensure that traditional markets keep playing an important part in the economies of the three towns.
It plans to cut regular traders rents by 10pc, reduce charity stalls rent to 5 - with charities able to book up to 12 places a year - cut rates for new starters for the first eight weeks, offer gazebos to rent for new starters and charities, and boost market advertising.
In return, traders would be expected to get rid of their own waste, rather than relying on the council to collect it.
Rhodri Oliver, NNDC deputy leader, said: Everyone loves to wander around a traditional market, whether they live locally or are on holiday.
