English weather doesn't dampen St George's Day spirit in Yate

3:48pm Monday 28th April 2014 in News By Alexandra Womack

Chris Boskett and Paul Warner of the Royal British Legion with George and the Dragon played by Helen Lee and Paul Harding of Discover History, MP Steve Webb with Mayor of Yate Cllr. Wully Perks and Madeleine Bills of the St George Society at the St George

THE Great British weather was in full force on Saturday as Yate celebrated St Georges Day.

The towns heritage centre hosted one of the biggest events to mark the countrys patron saint in the region with a line-up of traditional English entertainment, side stalls and refreshments.

St Marys green, between the centre and St Marys Church, saw a flow of displays by local primary school children including St Pauls Catholic Primary School, St Marys Primary School and North Road Community Primary School.

Morris dancers wowed the crowds and a Punch and Judy show kept children entertained.

Several acts were forced inside due to blustery gales in the middle of the event.

Community heritage officer and organiser David Hardill said: Five or six years we held the event and we knew immediately we wouldnt be putting up any gazebos or marquees because of the weather. But on Saturday it was breezy and only occasionally gusty so we couldnt anticipate it.

We did have a big marquee blow away but the Dunkirk spirit came out with everyone rallying round to help.

North Port wants to widen Price Boulevard - April 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 3:37 p.m. Last Modified: Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 3:37 p.m.

NORTH PORT - As commuters head to work and students arrive at several schools in the mornings, especially North Port High and Heron Creek Middle, traffic on two-lane Price Boulevard frequently backs up.

The stop-and-go experience gets repeated after classes are dismissed and, after 5 p.m., as commuters return home.

The City Commission recently decided that widening Price will be the city's next major thoroughfare project.

Price serves as the main east-west connector between Interstate 75 and U.S. 41. It spans much of the city, serving as the conduit thousands use to reach the city's main north-south connectors between I-75 and U.S. 41, Sumter Boulevard and Toledo Blade Boulevard.

There's no other way to cut across the city without using the federal highways, former city commissioner Fred Tower said. It (widening project) definitely is needed.

Nearly 7,000 vehicles traveled daily on the stretch west of Sumter Boulevard and nearly twice that many, 13,100, relied on the segment between Sumter and Toledo Blade Boulevard, according to a 2013 survey by the Florida Department of Transportation.

The City Commission says traffic will worsen if the two-lane road is not widened to four lanes.

City officials say the 5.8-mile project, from Biscayne Drive to Toledo Blade, can be done using the existing 100 feet of right of way and without taking anyone's property.

That's the plan that makes the most sense, Mayor Jim Blucher told city administrators. ...I think we need to move forward with it.

Thrilling Terengganu - April 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SETIU WETLAND, WEAVE EASY

All seven coaches start from TH Hotel and travel in a convoy, with police escorts no less, to Setiu Wetland. The 75-minute drive along coastal road is dotted with scenic views of colourful fishing boats anchored on the countrys longest beach by the South China Sea. It reminds us why fishing is an age-old tradition in Terengganu.

Setiu is also famous for its enchanting beaches, traditional fishing villages and nature, especially its wetland areas where we are heading. Here, aside from learning about the importance of mangroves, we plant more mangrove trees.

Meantime, in the shade of a make-shift tent not far from the mangroves, old women are giving a demonstration on mat weaving. Seated on the floor with their legs tucked sideways as kampung folk do, and armed with nipah, rattan and bamboo, they showed us how this was done. Most have over 10 years experience in weaving and are often commissioned to weave mats and baskets for chalets, restaurants, resorts and individual homes in Terengganu.

Besides weaving fruit baskets and floor mats, the women also show how to weave attap leaves, often used as roofing material for gazebos and beach huts.

As some members of the media struggle at their first try, these women make it look like a piece of cake.

    STOP, IM TICKLISH!

It takes about an hour to get to Gawi jetty from Kuala Terengganu. From there, we board several boats to a few attractions on Lake Kenyir, the biggest man-made lake in Southeast Asia.

Our first stop is Orchid Garden. Located on Hulu Selimbar Island, 20 minutes from the jetty, here you can find various wild orchid species and exotic hybrids of local and international species blooming in an array of colours.

We then board our boat and head for the tropical garden on Tekak Besar Island, an eco-tourism, research and development centre for diverse types of fruits tropical, wild, exotic and indigenous fruits which are close to extinction.

Changes coming to the 2014 Hunger Hike - April 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) The Hunger Hike has become a Lafayette tradition.

Hunger Hike is our communitys oldest and really most respected fundraising walk, said Lafayette Urban Ministry Executive Director Joe Micon.

This year, the tradition that began in the 1960s is coming with some changes. Due to construction on the John T. Meyers Pedestrian Bridge, this years starting line is moving.

Were not able to stage our site where we usually do at Riehle Plaza, so this year, we are here in the east end of the Levee Plaza parking lot, said Micon.

Micon said the new starting location will take participants through Tapawingo Park, allowing them to enjoy not only the park itself, but other local festivities.

Were going to bringing about 1,000 people walking right through Art on the Wabash, so thats a really good link and partnership as well, said Micon.

An additional 5K run has also been added the day before the hike, Saturday, September 20. The run will start at 8 a.m. at Cumberland Park in West Lafayette, and will give runners a scenic experience.

It goes through forests, lakes, around close to three different gazebos. So, its a great event, said Micon.

Last year, the hike raised more than $90,000. This year, the goal has been increased to $125,000 as the need to fight hunger continues to grow.

Planners host hearing on shed regulations - April 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Zoners will hear from townspeople on new regulations that would allow all sheds smaller than 200 square feet to be built without a permit.

A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 22.

The Planning and Zoning Commission discussed the changes made to state building codes, which became effective on Feb. 28, at a meeting on March 11.

Amendments to the towns rules and regulations would exempt several small structures, including sheds and free-standing decks, from needing a building permit for one and two structures on a single property. The changes would bring town regulations in line with state laws.

In order to establish consistency with these recent code changes, this amendment expands the list in the zoning regulations for minor accessory structures that are also to be exempted from the need of a zoning permit, the proposed amendment says.

Minor accessory structures previously included walls and fences, as well as doghouses and birdbaths.

Structures added under the amendment include storage sheds, gazebos and playhouses of less than 200 square feet; prefabricated swimming pools that are equal to or less than 24 inches deep; swings, non-habitable tree houses and other playground equipment; and decks not exceeding 200 square feet in an area that is not more than 30 inches above grade at any point and that are not attracted to a dwelling and do not serve an exit door.

The changes will also provide lot coverage and floor area exceptions for accessory structures not requiring a zoning permit, as suggested by the zoning enforcement officer, Richard Baldelli.

A day in the life of Surfside Beach - April 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Between the steady hum of traffic on U.S. 17 and the constant, soothing roar of the Atlantic Ocean are the surprisingly quiet streets of Surfside Beach that cover two square miles on the southern end of Horry County.

About 4,000 people proudly call Surfside Beach home. Those numbers swell in the summer with day-trippers, weekend visitors and weekly vacationers.

All seem to seek the family-friendly atmosphere that gave the town its motto: The Family Beach.

Rental homes on Ocean Boulevard bear names like Jolly Mon, Legal Ease, Recovery Zone and Just Chillin which speak to both the way of life in town and the respite sought by its visitors.

A day in the life of Surfside Beach is a retreat for any family.

Lynne Riszk, along with her husband and two daughters, decided to vacation in Surfside Beach for the first time during their daughters spring break.

She said it was a nice change after the harsh winter in Connecticut and the quiet of the small towns beach was exactly what the foursome needed.

A couple blocks away from the sand and sea are playgrounds, ball fields, bocce ball courts, a library and parks. Gazebos dot the towns lakes and only two hotels are on the oceanfront, with a third on the north end of U.S. 17 Business.

Its easy to find something unique in the many consignment and thrift shops along U.S. 17 business and theres no shortage of beachwear stores, either.

Joleen Pastore, a school teacher who has lived in Surfside Beach about two years, said she loves that she doesnt need to travel far from home for good food or shopping.
