GALLERY: More than 1500 visitors flock to Rhyl's Festival in the Park - August 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MORE than 1500 visitors flocked to this years Festival in the Park in Rhyl.

Despite some early showers, organisers and supporters of the event - which was held in the Botanical Gardens on Grange road, put up gazebos to keep guests sheltered and were able to enjoy an amazing day.

The day featured the Medieval Falconry team, chainsaw carving, donkey rides, the Vale Ladies Choir, Giant inflatables which included a gladiator joust and a giant equaliser, with two contestants pulling against one another on a giant bungee rope, a giant slide and Mr Magico put on a magic show.

There was also stalls, teddy tombola, adult tombola, fairground games, craft and plant stalls.

A spokesperson from the Botanical Gardens Community Association, said:

Considering the rain first thing, which we expected to put people off, we had an amazing day with a vast number of visitors. Despite one or two things on the programme having to be cancelled we still ended up with lots for people to see. We had in the region of 1500 to 2000 visitors over the course of the day.

I would like to thank everyone who came out despite the iffy weather and say a big thank you to all the volunteers who made the day such a success.

Sri Shirdi Sai Baba Temple in Monroeville plans expansion - August 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Leaders of the Sri Shirdi Sai Baba Temple in Monroeville plan to expand several parts of their complex on Abers Creek Road, including building a new two-story temple and a 50-foot spire.

On Wednesday night, the Monroeville Planning Commission made a unanimous recommendation that the project be approved.

The temple was seeking approval for site plans and several other aspects of the project, including a proposal to revise lot lines in order to create parcels of roughly one, 22 and 36 acres for the project.

New construction would include the spire, which exceeds the 35-foot height currently allowed, the new temple with more than 15,000 square feet of space, a connecting wing and four gazebos.

The existing building has been in use by the temple's congregation since 1991, but it is nearly 100 years old, according to Streamline Engineering President Martha Frech, engineer for the project.

It's an old structure; they want to modernize it for their congregation, Frech said.

The new temple would be an 81-by-81-foot two-story building, reduced from previous applications that outlined a three-story structure. The application has undergone numerous changes since originally coming before the commission in August 2011.

Monroeville resident Robert Serafini, who lives near the property, had concerns about stormwater management, particularly related to the roughly 1,400-foot proposed driveway, which would come off of Northern Pike.

The water runoff situation on Northern Pike is already bad, and this driveway is going to make it worse, Serafini said.

Frech told the commission that stormwater flow from the driveway would be directed to a PennDOT drain near the proposed entrance, and that a stormwater pond and rock bed would help alleviate water flow from the wooded area of the property.

Real estate notes: Regus leasing in busy Southpointe II complex - August 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Activity at Zenith Ridge 2, one of the three office buildings being built by Burns & Scalo Real Estate Services in Southpointe II, remains strong. The latest tenant to lease space is Regus, which has signed for 15,000 square feet. Regus, which offers shared workspace that includes offices, meeting rooms and access to business lounges, will be on the first floor of the 150,000-square-foot, five-story, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design/G-rated building. Other tenants include EQT, which leased 30,000 square feet, and Sentric Corp., which leased 13,334 square feet.

A new speculative warehouse/distribution facility, with 75,000 square feet, is under construction on a site off Crown Court in North Fayette with an anticipated opening by the end of the year. The estimated $5 million development by Ashford Imperial Partners is being marketed by Joel Kreider and Mike Mannella, both of Newmark Grubb Knight Frank. The speculative structure, which can be subdivided, is in the Imperial Business Park.

Officals of Sri Shirdi Sai Baba Temple Inc. will seek the approval on Wednesday of the Monroeville Planning Commission to build a two-story, 13,410-square-foot temple and spire, including a 1,466-square-foot addition, 264-square-foot connecting wing and four gazebos, at 1449 Abers Creek Road. The request includes cut-and-fill oprations of about 24,800 cubic yards because the site has a steep slope or grade. The total site will include one lot of 36.646 acres, a parcel of 22.755 acres and a third lot of 0.768 acre.

In Westmoreland County, two 15-year loans at 2.25 percent interest have been awarded by the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority to renovate buildings for multi-tenant occupancy by leasing to potential businesses. Farnham and Pfile Co. Inc. will receive $896,530 to renovate a building in Monessen. A $542,842 loan will be provided to the Economic Growth Connection of Westmoreland for similar treatment to a building in Mt. Pleasant. It is anticipated that the projects will lead to 33 new jobs and retain 79 positions. Total investment for both projects is more than $3.55 million. The Department of Community and Economic Development awarded the city of Latrobe a $60,000 Keystone Communities grant to support the Main Street Program. The grant will provide funding, on behalf of the Latrobe Community Revitalization Program for implementation of the Main Street program over the next three years. Funds will be used to attract businesses and hotel development, downtown facade improvements, ordinance enforcement, the development of a walk/bike trail and the renovation of 3,000 square feet of mixed-use space.

Dollar General opened on Saturday at 4725 Centre Ave., Oakland, with from six to 10 employees.

Annie Hanna Cestra has been reappointed by Gov. Tom Corbett to a term on the Pennsylvania Department of Real Estate Commission. This marks her third term on the Commission which she serves as the current chair. Chestra is executive vice president and chief operating officer of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services.

A check for $75,000 was presented to the Washington County Agricultural Fair board of directors by the Washington County Board of Commissioners. This marks the final payment for improvements to the fairgrounds. The county has invested more than $975,000 at the site since 2002, primarily for the construction of buildings 2 and 4.

Astrobotic Technology Inc., which delivers affordable space robotic products, services and future missions for emerging commercial space markets, is expanding its terrestrial facilities at 2515 Liberty Ave., Strip District. It has obtained a $123.290 seven-year loan from the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, a matching grant from Allegheny County and private financing for the $328,996 project. It includes a 10,000-square-foot expansion on the second floor with office space for 50 employees and specialized facilities, including a clean room, shake table and thermal-vacuum chamber. Astrobotic's 2015 inaugural mission will land on the Moon's Lacus Mortis region to claim the Google Lunar XPrize and explore a lunar pit that is a suspected entrance to a lunar cave. Team Astrobotic, with Carnegie Mellon University, has been selected to compete for three of the recently established terrestrial Milestone Prizes, which awards $1.75 million for accomplishments in landing, mobility and imaging.

Healthy & Beautiful Gardens - August 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Friday, August 15th, 2014 Issue 33, Volume 18.

Hello, fellow gardeners! Even though its not February, I thought this might be a good subject for landscaping this week. I think wed all like a little more romance in our lives, wouldnt we?

I dont recommend planting anything right now. Its a little too warm, but once we get into fall weather assuming we get some fall weather thats an ideal time to get new plants in the ground as they can acclimate well and have plenty of time to get roots established before the spring growth.

Alright then. What do you think of when I say romantic garden? Many people might think of roses or hearts carved into their garden gate, or they might even think of a Jacuzzi spa for two. Those are all romantic of course, but Id like to expand on that as well as give some other possible ideas readers might not have even thought of.

One thing that conjures up romance to me is privacy. This can be accomplished through judicious planning of plant and tree placement as well as hardscaping; hardscaping would be things such as trellises, pergolas and gazebos. All of these structures should be covered with fragrant vines for maximum effect.

Fragrance is one of those elements that add romance to the garden, especially in the evening! Roses (English roses, rugosas, and heirlooms are the most fragrant) and jasmine vines are high on my list, but those are not the only options.

How about lavender, mock orange, heavenly scent, honeysuckle, sweet peas viburnums, wisteria or gardenias? These are all great choices.

Citrus trees are a great addition because they smell great when they flower. Is there anything more scrumptious than the scent of orange blossoms?

Lemon verbena is a great plant because it smells great and can be used for potpourri making also.

Those in the Fallbrook area and west of that may be able to grow some of the more tropical fragrant plants as well. Plumeria would be on the top of my list.

    SOLA3 celebrates its 10th anniversary - August 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Ryan Mavity | Aug 12, 2014

Rehoboth Beach Save Our Lakes Alliance3 will ring in its 10th anniversary with a celebration Saturday, Aug. 16.

For founder Sallie Forman, the 10th anniversary was a chance to look back and ahead.

Looking back at the highlights of our accomplishments, we thought, Wow, weve done a lot, she said. Theres a lot more to be done.

SOLA3, with the three referring to Rehoboths three lakes Lake Gerar, Silver Lake and Lake Comegys was a case of citizen activism in action. In 2004, Forman, who lives at Lake Comegys, banded with other homeowners to protest three townhouses being built right on the edge of the lake.

We didnt think that was a good thing, she said.

After failing to make much headway with the developers, the community organized to help manage the lakes.

First up was Lake Gerar, which was in bad shape, she said, plagued by pollution and algae blooms. Working with city officials and Envirotech, SOLA3 helped secure a state grant to restore the shoreline with a natural vegetative buffer and install aerators.

Next, SOLA3 moved on to Lake Comegys, where the group lobbied Delaware Department of Transportation to convert an old DelDOT right-of-way into a conservation easement, giving all properties along Lake Comegys a setback from the lake.

Perhaps SOLA3's most important success, Forman said, was that state officials, under the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, have acknowledged ownership of Silver Lake. Forman said SOLA3 pushed hard to resolve the issue of who owns Silver Lake, which for years had been split between Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach and Sussex County. Using a 1978 public lands survey researched and presented by SOLA3 attorney Gene Lawson, DNREC acknowledged in February 2013 that it owned Silver Lake up to the shoreline.
