People who celebrate Halloween are spending more than ever on the holiday in 2020, a year thats been almost all trick and no treat.

Admittedly, the percentage doing the celebrating this year is down 4% (to 58%) in a new National Retail Federation survey, a drop directly attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. But what theyre spending per person has jumped to an all-time high of over $92, with much of that going to decorations.

In part, its because people are spending a lot more time at home. In part, its because decorating the house for the holiday can make up a little, at least for having to forgo the trick-or-treat tradition this year, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC to its friends) and the Oregon Health Authority.

The big-box stores know this all too well, selling out of 12-foot-tall skeletons and creepy jack-in-the-box clowns that would keep Stephen King awake at night.

But there are ways to create decor even Dracula would approve of for falls second spookiest holiday (behind the absolutely terrifying Election Day), that wont suck your bank account dry in the process.

Of course, carving pumpkins is an option (see our previous column for guidance), but the impact is especially short-term, because once you carve them, you have less than a week before they start to rot.

So we that would be Marcia have come up with a few ideas to create some spooky additions to your holiday experience. And for very little money.

Consider them our treat to you. Especially since I plan on eating all the candy wed normally hand out to trick-or-treaters.

If you are a longtime reader, you might remember me saying before that I love Halloween.

I love the season the colors, long sideways shadows, crisp clean air and freaky monsters.

I love the creativity of it all the pumpkins and gourds, homemade decorations and handmade costumes.

In fact, for my September birthday, I was gifted a wiener dog skeleton (Dennis: Dont worry, it was fake) from our granddaughter Noelle. Best present ever!

On Halloween evening, I greet every person at the front door, ask them about their costumes and hand out a full-size candy bar to each and every one of them.

Young, old or in between, if you are dressed up, you get candy from me (Dennis: Is that why Weird Uncle Gary wears a wizard hat and a wrestling singlet every year? Marcia: I cant unsee that!).

Id love it if everyone wore a costume and trick-or-treated. Age makes no difference; its the spirit that counts.

Last year, I came up with the idea to make a giant spider out of a round pittosporum bush in our front garden. I bought foam pipe insulation to make legs, decorated it with orange lights and made eyes out of solar lights.

This year, I decided to use that same idea and make two matching pots that flank our front entry path into spiders. It was a simple, inexpensive project that was easy and fun to do.

I also created spider pumpkins and pots from clippings and divisions I found in the garden. Any excuse to be outside with a shovel and clippers on a sunny fall day is good therapy before we hunker down for the approaching winter.

Plus, the little spider pumpkins have so much personality they make me laugh!

Im sad that because of COVID-19 we will not be greeting people at the door this year, but next year watch out!

There will be flying bats, screaming goblins and Weird Uncle Gary dressed up as Big Foot (Dennis: Anything is better than the wrestling singlet), handing out theater-sized candy.

It will be a Halloween to remember, thats for sure!

Vicky Gibbons of Valhermoso Springs in Morgan County, Ala., wasnt really surprised someone spray-painted Trump on the hood of her car. Its what I would expect from the kind of people Trump has attracted as additions to the Republican Party, Gibbons said Friday. My neighbors are Republican, but they would never do something like this. It would be the fringe or redneck types.

Gibbons allowed a Democratic volunteer to put Biden signs in her yard this week after he asked permission. I told him to go ahead, she said. I had worked with him in (a) campaign. I was manager of the Democratic headquarters in Morgan County in 2008.

They were there for two days, she said of the signs, which also got sprayed the night of the car attack.

The car was parked near the highway where Gibbons' 100-year-old house sits back from the road under big, old trees. Whatever they are, they drip sap in the Fall," she said of the trees, "so the only place I can park I dont have a garage is at the end of my driveway. So, the car was parked that way, nose first. Gibbons imagines the vandals sprayed her Biden signs and then said, Oh, look over here. A nice, white bulletin board.

Gibbons called an auto body shop, and the owner told her to get the car there as soon as possible. The faster you bring it in, the more likely we are to get it off, he said. The shop got the paint off in five or 10 minutes and didnt charge Gibbons. I didnt ask and he didnt say, she said, but I have a feeling he may be a Republican and is ashamed of what somebody did.

Why would she think the shop owner might be a Republican? Shes lived within 2 miles of her home her entire life, she said, and she knows, Most people in Alabama are Republicans.

I live in a sea of loneliness, she said.

Patio season isn't over in Sioux Falls at least not until there's a frost on your beer glass.

Restaurants, eateries and bars across Sioux Falls are stocking their patios with space heaters to extend patio season this year. The decisioncomes from demand for more outdoor diningdue to COVID-19 precautions.

While residents have flocked to patios this summer, several eateries are using their outdoor space to accommodate guests without having to close their indoor dining space.

Some die-hards might keep topatios until the snow starts flying, but owners just hope space heaters will extend outdoor dining for about another month as the temperature drops to the 50s and 40s.

Barrel House:The east-side bar and restaurant keeps its patio open year-round, said owner Mike Fonder. Permanent overhead heaters keep the area warm, and several tables with fireplaces are placed throughout the patio. The features will extend patio season into November for Barrel House, Fonder said.

Bread and Circus: The restaurant installed two 20-foot overhead heaters for its patio space in May. Its owners are also hoping to install temporary walls around its patio to limit the amount of wind in the area.

Carino's: The patio at the Italian restaurant will remain open with three large space heaters and a stone fireplace for as long as able. The area isn't sheltered from wind, though.

Falls Landing: The riverside restaurant installed a few 8-foot tall space heaters around its patio last week after customers suggested the additions. Management hopes to keep the patio open for as long as people want to sit outside.

Icon Lounge: A new space filling what used to be the Icon Lounge will be opening in a few weeks, owners say. The restaurant will use space heaters to extend patio season.

Look's Marketplace: It was difficult for the market and restaurant to find space heaters, due to a national shortage, said partner Beau Vondra. But the restaurant filled its patio with seven space heaters to accommodate customers for as long as they're willing to sit outside.

Mackenzie River: The restaurant and bar has had permanent overhead heaters installed in its patio area since it opened. Manager Austin Whitley believes patio-goers can comfortably use the space through the end of October.

McNally's Irish Pub: The pub's patio would usually be closed by this time of year if it weren't for space heaters warming up customers, said assistant manager Taulant Selamani. The heaters should help customers sit comfortably into 40-degree weather, he said.

Pave: The downtown bar patio has several tables with fire pits and a few space heaters.

Remedy Brewing: The brewing locale has two space heaters filling their patio area and plan to fill the space with more. They're keep space heaters out as long as people are brave enough to weather the snow.

Roam Kitchen and Bar: Space heaters and fire pits allow the restaurant to extend its bar season. Guests flocked to the patio in early spring when the temperatures were rising to the mid-30s, said manager Joe Jirele. The heaters should help extend patio season by about a month.

Vinyl Taco Social Club: A fire pit sits outside the restaurant and four space heaters fill the patio of the Vinyl Social Club. The heaters will help customers withstand the cold into late fall or into the lower 50s, said co-owner Kirk Keupp.

Custom garden-house builder Hillbrook Collections reports orders up 60% year-to-date, compared with 2019. And in the last six months, NEO Builders in Los Angeles saw 250% more interest in their accessory dwelling units," or ADUs, habitable backyard buildings. Horton, who just recast an ADU on his mothers property in Charlottesville, Va., into a pottery studio for her. We repurposed a garage-sale rug and antique chairs that were my grandparents and didnt fit in the [main] house," he said.

Perhaps to erase the dingy pasts of existing garden sheds, many designers paint their interiors white. On walls and between the chestnut ceiling beams of her little saltbox outbuilding, a late-1700s structure about 300 feet from her home in Weston, Conn., interior designer Chris Roughan turned to Benjamin Moores Super White. The hoops youll need to vault through will likely increase with every nicety you want to add, from electrical wiring to a plumbed bathroom. Its been a few months since Microsoft revealed the new user experience that would be coming to both the Xbox One as well as the Xbox Series X|S, but starting this week, everyone with an Xbox should finally be able to check it out for themselves. The October 2020 Xbox One Update has begun to roll out to the general public, which means that when you next power on your Xbox One, you should be able to install it if it didnt install automatically.

If your Xbox looks the same as it always has when you turn it on, head to the home screen and push the Xbox button on your controller. Go to Settings > System > Updates & downloads. Select the first option. Once the new updates been installed, youll notice that the entire UI has been redesigned from the ground up.

This isnt the most drastic visual overhaul that the Xbox One or 360 user interface has ever received, but it is a major improvement over the old UI. Its sleek, modern look can be attributed to a variety of changes, from the new font that appears on the home screen and within menus to the tiles with rounded corners.

One of the key features of the Xbox UI is customization, as you can easily add and remove elements from the home screen. Microsoft has increased the customizability of the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S by adding Customer Profile themes in the October update. If you head to your profile, you can pick a theme that will appear in the background of your profile. There are several already available, including a few Series X and Series S themes.

Microsoft also focused on quality of life improvements, such as the new sign-in experience. Unless you have an Xbox set up to log you in automatically, you will now be greeted by a new screen when you power on the console. So rather than going straight to the home screen, your Xbox will ask you Whos playing today? and prompt you to choose any of the accounts you have logged into on the console, or create a new one.

Finally, the October update adds support for four more languages: Hungarian, Greek, Slovak, and Czech. If you want to choose one of the new languages, head to Settings > System > Location > Language and pick from the list. This is a great addition for those regions right before the Xbox Series X and Series S launch.

Speaking of which, the $499 Xbox Series X and $299 Xbox Series S launch on November 10th.

September was a massive month for new movies on Netflix, both when it comes to Netflixs original films as well as popular movies that Netflix has licensed from other studios. Highlights from among the content Netflix licensed starting in September include Pineapple Express, Red Dragon, Glory, and all three installments of Back to the Future, and thats just the tip of the iceberg. Then, when it comes to Netflixs new original films, there were three in particular that Netflix subscribers seemed to love the most: The new Charlie Kaufmann movie Im Thinking of Ending Things starring Jesse Plemons, The Devil All The Time starring Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson, and Enola Holmes starring Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill. 57 new movies in total were added to Netflix in September, and you can check them all out in our earlier coverage so you can be sure you caught all of the biggest new releases.

September is now behind us and October has arrived, so its time we turn our attention to Netlfixs October 2020 movies list.

Believe it or not, a whopping 44 new movies were already added to Netflixs catalog just during the first week of October. Highlights include Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Basic Instinct, Cape Fear, Fargo, Gran Torino, Her, House of 1,000 Corpses, The Outpost, and a criminally underrated dramedy called Stranger Than Fiction that stars Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. We were so happy to see it slide up the charts this past weekend definitely check it out if you havent seen it already, or give it a second viewing if you have already seen it. Another big release thats already out in October is called Vampires vs. the Bronx, a new original Netflix film that tons of people are talking about right now on social media.

Moving forward, there are plenty of additional releases slated to take place this month that you should definitely look forward to. A new Adam Sandler movie called Hubie Halloween has been burning up Netflixs charts if youre into Adam Sandler movies and other big additions to Netflix include Moneyball, Batman: The Killing Joke, a talked-about Netflix original called The Forty-Year-Old Version, and ParaNorman. Theres also a new Aaron Sorkin movie out today called The Trial of the Chicago 7, which stars Sacha Baron Cohen in his second dramatic role. Finally, David Finchers new flick Mank was supposed to be released at some point in October, but Netflix didnt include it on its official October 2020 releases list. Well have to wait and see if theres a surprise in store.

Netflix is releasing 74 new movies in October 2020 heres the full list - BGR

On November 5, people across Great Britain celebrate Guy Fawkes Night with bonfires and fireworks. Centuries after his failed attempt to blow up the British Parliament, Fawkes's image remains prevalent in popular culture, thanks to films like V for Vendetta (2005). Here are 10 fiery facts about Fawkes and the holiday his treasonous attempts inspired.

Guy (also known as Guido) Fawkes was born in 1570 in Yorkshire, England. He was raised by a Protestant family, but secretly converted to Catholicism as a young man. When he was 21, he went to fight alongside the Spanish Catholics in Flanders. During the fighting, he became an expert on explosives. This, alongside his fanatic Catholicism, is what got him recruited to the Gunpowder Plot.

England became a Protestant country after the Reformation. As such, Catholics were persecuted and forced to practice their religion in secret. A wealthy Catholic named Robert Catesby decided the only solution to this discrimination was to overthrow King James I and his government. He recruited a number of other Catholics, including Fawkes, and together they plotted to plant gunpowder under the British Houses of Parliament and blow it sky-high.

The conspirators rented a cellar underneath the Houses of Parliament. Disguised as a servant named John Johnson, Fawkes began filling it with barrels of gunpowder. Once the explosives were in place and Parliament was confirmed to be sitting, ensuring the House of Commons would be full of MPs, the date for ignition was set: November 5, 1605.

Everything was going according to plan, until one of the conspirators decided to write an anonymous letter to a Catholic member of Parliament, Lord Monteagle, warning him to stay away from the Houses of Parliament on the night of November 5. Monteagle, sensing danger, showed the letter to the King, who ordered the area to be immediately searched. Thirty-six barrels of gunpowder were discovered hidden beneath piles of firewood in a storeroom below the House of Lords. Fawkes, found at the scene while armed with long fuses and dressed for his escape, was arrested.

After his capture, Fawkes was sent to the infamous Tower of London, where he was tortured until he confessed and gave the names of his fellow conspirators. Soldiers were soon dispatched to Staffordshire to apprehend Catesby, the mastermind behind the plot. Catesby and his two compatriots died in a gunfight while attempting to combat the approaching soldiers.

Fawkes, meanwhile, was sentenced to death. Treason carried the harshest punishment, and he was to be hung, drawn, and quartered. On the day of his executionJanuary 31, 1606Fawkes managed to wrestle free from the soldiers guarding him and jumped (or fell) from the gallows, fatally breaking his neck. The executioners were not going to let him escape his full punishment: They cut his dead body into quarters, then set the pieces of his corpse to the four corners of the kingdom as a warning to others.

The day of the ill-fated Gunpowder Plot was decreed a day of celebrationafter the attack was prevented, people lit bonfires to toast the King's safety. November 5 was declared a day of thanksgiving, and the first official celebration took place exactly a year after the failed Gunpowder Plot, on November 5, 1606. People across Britain gathered around bonfires and burned effigies of Fawkes.

The festivities developed over the years. It became customary for children to make a life-sized dummy of Fawkes, which they would take around their neighborhood in a wheelbarrow while asking for a penny for the Guy to collect money to buy fireworks. Huge bonfires were built in every village and town, and a Fawkes dummy would be placed on top and set alight. The traditional brightly colored firework displays represent the explosives that were meant to ignite under the Houses of Parliament.

Various songs and rhymes to help school children remember the story of the Gunpowder Plot were created, including this one from the 18th century:

Guy Fawkes Night (also known as Bonfire Night) is still honored on November 5 across Britain and parts of the former British Empire. Some people celebrate with friends in their gardens, while others gather in their village green, parks, and other public spaces. Bonfires are lit and effigies of Fawkes (or more often, modern political leaders or societal villains) are burned while fireworks burst in the sky. Traditionally, people feast on baked potatoes and toffee apples.

One of the most famous celebrations takes place in Lewes in East Sussex, where a number of bonfire societies, each with their own special traditions, host festivities across the city. Before the fires are lit, effigies of political figures are paraded through the town and the streets throng with people.

Numerous pictures and engravings were produced of the dramatic moment Fawkes was apprehended. His big black floppy hat, leather riding boots, and manicured mustache and beard became iconic. Centuries after the thwarted Gunpowder Plot, Fawkess image is still easily recognizable.

The main character in the comic book V for Vendetta (and 2005 movie of the same name) wears a mask of Fawkess face to keep his identity a secret as he fights against a dystopian authoritarian government. As a result, the Guy Fawkes mask has become synonymous with rebellion, and is often worn by anti-establishment protestors.

When Guy Fawkes was captured, he was supposedly holding an iron lantern to light his way in the dark cellars. Peter Heywood, who helped carry out the search of the Houses of Parliament on the night of the failed Gunpowder Plot, kept the beacon as a souvenir. When he died, the lantern went to his brother Robert, who worked at the University of Oxford. Robert gifted the iron lantern to his workplace in 1641. It was put on display at the Bodleian Librarys picture gallery, then later transferred to the Oxfords Ashmolean Museum, where you can still find it today.

Though the failed Gunpowder Plot occurred more than 400 years ago, it's still tradition for the Yeomen of the Guard to search the cellars of the Houses of Parliament before the State Opening each year. The original spot where Fawkes hid his gunpowder burned down during a fire at the Palace of Westminster in 1834, but officials still scour the existing cellars, just to be sure. However, the searches are performed more for tradition and ritual rather than security.

Under a string of new deals, the content line-up on STV Player will be bolstered by drama programmes East West 101, Striking Out and Devils Dust. They will join what the firm described as an already stellar line-up which includes the likes of Catching Milat, The Bridge and Janet King.

The catch-up window on network content has also been extended, meaning hit dramas like Des and Honour will be available on the player platform for longer.

The group is also adding 140 hours of new sport to the video-on-demand service as part of the latest catalogue expansion. Weekly football analysis shows Lifes a Pitch and The Football Review lead the new additions, alongside petrolhead-friendly titles Garage Dreams, The Racing Years and Shifting Gears with Aaron Kaufman.

STV said it had ordered a wealth of new content from distribution partners DCD Rights, Fred Media, Inverleigh and Broken Arrow.

In total, STV Player now offers some 1,750 hours of exclusive content with seven live channels. The latest programme additions follow a year of accelerated digital growth for STV, with online streams up 66 per cent year-on-year, and the number of minutes watched rising from 719 million to 1.32 billion an 84 per cent year-on-year increase.

The past year has also seen the player being launched UK-wide on Freeview Play, Virgin Media and YouView, making it automatically available in around half of the UKs 42 million internet-enabled TV devices.

Releasing results for the six months to the end of June, the broadcaster said it had seen its highest audience growth ever, up 12 per cent, with all time viewing share of 19.2 per cent. That growth had continued as lockdown measures were relaxed, it added.

While total advertising revenue slumped 20 per cent as the industry was battered by the effects of the coronavirus outbreak, the group pointed to an improving picture.
