NARRAGANSETT The Narragansett Planning Board and Historic District Commission convened on Tuesday evening for a special workshop to analyze possible amendments to local historic districts and to identify key properties and areas for potential district additions. The subcommittee focused on the need to further examine designations and districts in light of the recent controversy surrounding a proposal to subdivide a lot on Kentara Green, specifically one of the Sherry Cottages. Over the course of the last two months, many residents have been up-in-arms about a proposal made by David DiClemente to sub-divide his property at 65 Gibson Ave., sitting on Kentara Green, in order to build a two to three car garage with an apartment above. The apartment was originally not part of the proposal, but was added later in order to adhere to the towns policy on lot sub-divisions. The proposal came before the planning board and historic district commission at different times throughout the course of the last two months.

Rockville is taking some preliminary steps toward preserving the King Farm Farmstead Park, as city officials work to determine a more detailed plan for the farm.
While some of the structures have potential for future use, others are deteriorating and the need to find a use for the site is increasing, according to a report on the facility provided to the mayor and City Council.
They voted 4-0 Monday night to schedule a briefing with the citys Historic District Commission and allocate money to deal with groundhogs on the property and assess it for hazardous materials while they consider what should be done with the property in the long term.
The city needs to start making some decisions on the farm, said Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton.
We cannot wait any longer, she said.
The steps approved Monday will cost from $22,000 to $32,000. The report estimates that taking all the actions it recommends would cost about $5.6 million.
The King Farm was once the largest farm in the area, but much of it has been developed into homes, parks, stores and offices. Today, only eight buildings on 7 acres remain of the original farm.
The farmstead park was given to Rockville in the late 1990s and was designated as historic by the city in 2006.
The agreement that gave the farm to the city requires that it must be used as a neighborhood park and site for recreational activity for the public.
Despite its current state, the site has been the center of much interest from various groups.

With the September debut of Forza Horizon 2 rapidly approaching, developer Playground Games has unveiled 31 more vehicles slated to appear in the open-world racer.
Unlike the initial deluge of cars revealed last month, Playground is now unveiling vehicles in smaller, thematic packs. The first 16 "were chosen with heritage in mind," according to Playground, and the list includes such highlights as the 2002 Ferrari Enzo Ferrari, the 1967 Corvette Stingray 427 and, because a list of iconic cars isn't complete without at least one 70s-era American muscle car, the 1971 AMC Javelin AMX.
Playground later unveiled a list of 15 cars with "notable racing history," including rallycross stars like the 1992 Lancia Delta HF Integrale EVO, classics like the 1965 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe and 1971 Plymouth Cuda 426 HEMI, and high-powered supercars like the 2011 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. Granted, the Bugatti doesn't have a lengthy history of racing wins, but it does have a massive price tag only matched by the horsepower under its hood, so apparently it qualifies.
Forza Horizon 2 is slated to launch on September 30 on both Xbox One and Xbox 360. For more on the cars available at release, please see Playground's latest Xbox Wire update.

Three adults and two children are homeless after a fire swept through an East Lake home Wednesday night, Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said.
The fire started just before 8 p.m. Wednesday at 4207 10th Ave., and the fire department responded with four companies. The house was cluttered and had several roof additions, which made it difficult for firefighters to find and extinguish the fire, Garner said.
Still, the blaze was under control within 30 minutes, and no one was injured. Most damage was in the kitchen and garage, Garner said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called in to help the family.

Family of five displaced by fire -

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - A family of five has been displaced from the Chattanooga home after a house fire Wednesday night.
Four companies from the Chattanooga Fire Department responded to the alarm at 4207 10th Avenue before 8:00pm Wednesday.
CFD Captain Schroyer said there was a lot of smoke and fire inside the home.
The firefighters' efforts were hampered by the home's construction, which had void spaces and several roof additions, making it difficult for fighters to reach the fire, according to Bruce Garner, the Public Information Director for the Chattanooga Fire Department.
It took about 30 minutes for the fire to be brought under control, with most of the damage being confined to the kitchen and garage areas.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Damages are estimated to be about $25,000.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross of Southeast Tennessee provided assistance to the family.

The Springfield Planning Commission met in a special summer session to see the application of a new project at Springfield Country Club complex. Somewhat reminiscent of the process for the Marriott Courtyard, the principals like to get moving as soon as ready. Planners accommodated the request for the meeting and recommended approval after an hour of the presentation.
Referred to as the hotel spa, the new structure will provide needed storage, office space, a spa and several bridal suites.
The hotel has been a great success, and the township is very happy with it, said Solicitor Jim Byrne.
Byrne appeared on behalf of the township which has granted a land lease for the Marriott. This property is included in that agreement. Pat Burns manages the township-owned country club banquet facility and, in cooperation with Marriott, owns and operates the hotel. Burns is the applicant for this project as well.
The golf course and banquet facility in particular have storage needs which have substantially outgrown the existing out buildings. A garage and shed are run down, outdated, deteriorating and have nowhere near modern standards, Byrne noted. However the necessary utilities and infrastructure are on site for use. Once the old buildings are demolished, the new structure will have a footprint only slightly larger.
As with the country club and Marriott, the project has no taxpayer expense, Byrne stressed.
The lowest level for storage will be visible only from the golf course side. The top levels will be approximately the same elevation as the Taylor-Evans House, a historic home on the property. The second level will feature a spa under the same management as the Joseph Anthony Salon and Spa in Glen Mills. The upper floor will have several suites, which are particularly suited but not limited to wedding parties, said Burns.
The new building will be linked to the Marriott by a covered walkway and designed to appear as a seamless addition to the overall complex.
The applicant and township are aware of restrictions relevant to any changes at the Taylor-Evans House, the oldest portion of which dates back to the late 1600s, and has had numerous additions and adjustments in the ensuring centuries. If the decision is made to refresh the paint and better coordinate it with newer building, colors will be discussed with the appropriate organizations.

Stunning by night or day, the outdoor patio is always available for a summer barbecue with family and friends.
Well established landscaping creates a lovely border around the home - but don't worry, it's low maintenance.
The lush lawns and gardens are kept alive during the East Coast summer by using water from a large dam that's on the shared property.
The large flat lawns are perfect for a variety of outdoor activities - backyard cricket anyone?
The outlook is one of the Turnpenny's favourite features on the property; from stunning sunrises to an ever changing landscape of colour throughout the seasons.
The kitchen is a lovely light space with a beautiful view out to the garden.
With extensive lawns and hills to roam, the Turnpenny family live a 'free range' lifestyle, and their chooks do too: it's actually one of the things they love most about their Patutahi property.
"With fresh eggs at the back door, who could want for more! We also enjoy growing produce in the veggie garden - especially when we get to enjoy the asparagus patch in spring and raspberries all summer," says Julie Turnpenny.
The couple decided to move to the country from the coast in 1993, and while the original house on the property was very run down, they still saw plenty of potential in the site.
"The elevation gives us seasonal views over a landscape of vineyards, pasture and agriculture, and we also see spectacular sunrises over the Poverty Bay flats."

Adding color to a homes exterior -

Q. We have ordered a new garage door that comes primed but not painted. Our 40-year-old house has natural cedar siding and some brown trim, somewhat Arts and Crafts style. The garage takes up approximately 50 percent of the front facade. Do you have any color suggestions? Think fun. We are in our 70s, and want fun/tasteful/ pretty. Many thanks. Sue
A. Color is an individual choice, but it also needs to work with the color of your homes exterior cladding. What could look fabulous on your garage door is a smoky gray/green-blue color. Think turquoise that is softened with gray. Any shade of blue goes well with wood shades, and this choice has lots of life to it. Although front doors and trim look good in a high-gloss finish, because the garage door is so large, use a satin finish.
There are other additions to your exterior that will build on the style and appeal of the facade. Fypon manufactures thousands of decorative millwork elements in a variety of architectural styles.
Each piece is crafted from tough, weather-resistant, high-performance materials that are resistant to decay, insect infestation and water damage. For Arts and Crafts homes, Fypon recommends woodgrain/timber products such as lightweight beams under a porch ceiling, brackets, corbels and two- and three-plank panel shutters.
Shown here over a double garage in a row of townhouses is a trellis system kit in woodgrain. It also comes in smooth style. Also shown is a cheerful window flanked by three-panel shutters with a beam window sill. The violet stain is a vibrant color that would also suit your home. Planters and gardens add color and joy to the front of your home as well.
When you are not sure of a color selection, experiment with different shades on a large piece of Bristol board, tape up the new color against the existing exterior color, stand back and see how it makes you feel.
Fypon has declared August National Curb Appeal Month. We all benefit from the care our neighbors take in their home and surrounding property. Enjoy your new venture, and never lose your wonderful spirit.
Q. I have a wooden angel that I painted white and want to apply highlights to in a shade of brown. Ive seen you do this on a white headboard. What is the mixture you applied? Thanks for all your great ideas. Macelinda
A. There are many recipes for creating the aged or antique look that you are looking for. I generally use one part latex paint mixed with three parts glazing liquid. The color comes from the paint; choose a burnt umber or medium-brown shade. Apply a thin coat of the colored glaze over the dry white painted surface. Let dry. Apply more coats until you have the color that you want. The glaze makes the mixture translucent so that you will see the white shining through. The more glaze in the mixture, the more translucent it will be and the longer it will take to dry. More paint in the mixture will make it more opaque. Experiment on a spare piece of painted wood until you have the shading that suits.

Adding color to a homes exterior
LOCKPORT Niagara County leaders are again considering a new Public Works Department facility, but this time it could be significantly scaled back from the failed plan of six years ago.
It would still be built on Junction Road in Cambria, where the county bought 60 acres of land for the project for $180,000 in 2008.
However, the County Legislature called a halt to planning when it received a $42 million cost estimate for the new complex, which was to include the Public Works offices, a highway equipment garage and extras such as space to store the countys voting machines.
This time, the project may include only a highway garage to replace the aging building on South Niagara Street in Lockport, according to Richard W. Eakin, deputy public works commissioner for buildings and grounds.
The Legislature is to vote Tuesday on paying the Wendel engineering firm of Amherst $18,500 to come up with a floor plan and exterior renderings of the building.
Its my understanding were going to be supplied with more alternatives than we were before, said Majority Leader Richard E. Updegrove, R-Lockport.
He suggested a possible hybrid facility to store the countys trucks with the possibility of future additions.
The resolution on Tuesdays agenda speaks of determining what departments should be identified to be included in a Phase I construction.
No cost estimate for the eventual construction has been determined, Eakin said.
Referring to the 2008 stop order, Updegrove said. A lot of things have changed since then, but the deterioration of the building Public Works is housed in has not changed.

Theres no need to pour concrete. Get off the ground with a simple treated-wood foundation. Build it just like a deck platform.
2 of 2
Walls and roof finish the addition and make it look like its always been part of the house.
Is a packed garage keeping you from buying your dream motorcycle? Or maybe you just need a little more space for lawn equipment, bikes or your woodworking tools. A bump-out addition may be the solution to your overcrowded garage. And in this article well show you how to build one. If you have basic carpentry skills and experience building a deck, shed or other structure, then you can build this garage addition. In this article, well focus on the tough parts of the project, like installing the beam and building the roof. Study Figures A C for construction details. A Materials List is available in Additional Information below.
Start with a traditional pressure-treated deck, then add the walls and roof.
In addition to a basic set of carpentry tools, youll need a hammer drill to bore holes for the concrete anchors, and ladders or rented scaffolding to finish the roofing and other exterior details. While not essential, a reciprocating saw will simplify the wall tear-out.
We spent roughly $2,000 for materials for this 5 x 12-ft. garage addition. Your costs will vary depending on the type of siding, roofing and windows you choose.
With a helper, plan to spend about half a day installing the beam and a long weekend framing the addition. Then plan to spend another weekend finishing the exterior. The time it takes to complete the project will depend on whether you finish the inside as we did. Keep in mind that you can hire a siding, roofing or drywall contractor to complete parts of the project youre not comfortable with.
