Installing bamboo follows closely in how traditional hardwood is installed, but one thing is clear; be careful. Why? Some bamboos are quite soft in that they can ding and dent quite easily. Probably the best advice here is protect the floor after each section is installed. More on this topic is covered below.
With any type of installation, critical steps to success should be performed before starting. These include acclimation, moisture testing, and proper floor preparation. Generally the lack of floor preparation is one of the leading reasons for failure. In a nutshell, all subfloors should be flat while allowing a tolerance of 3/16" over a span of 8-10 feet. For more on all these topics, follow my floor preparation articles.
Nailed or Stapled
If you have a wood subfloor the direct fastening method seems to be the preference. Originally many manufacturers did not provide specifications, rather they assumed most installers were safe in following standard methods which included stapling. In recent years more guidelines have surfaced that includes the use of 18 gauge cleat nails over staples that eliminate or cut down on tongue splitting; a result that can create squeaky floors.
Products now being recommended by larger manufacturers include the Powernail 50P or Primatech Q550 specifically when it comes to the harder, more popular stand flooring varieties.
Guidelines for nail down procedures should be similar to that of common hardwoods. Fasten every 6-8" on center (OC) and approximately 2" away from each end joint. Always keep a good eye on nail penetration. These tools are pneumatic and fasteners will not seat properly if the air pressure is too low or high. Failure to monitor can result in crushed board tongues (high pressure) that can result in squeaking, or adjacent board surface dimples or bumps (low pressure) once the floor is installed.
Floating Floors
Too often I hear, "they said we could float this floor." Not all products can be installed by the floating floor method, specifically solid products. Wider engineered or cross ply products should only be considered for floating. Floating floors are installed over various types of underlayment providing a cushioned feel. Some more popular basic underlayments include three in one (3-1) types that provide cushion and moisture protection for concrete subfloors.
Click or glue? Click or snap lock products have become popular with the DIY crowd in laminate, hardwood, and bamboo. How long they hold up has always been on many installers minds. As of this update, September 20, 2014, we're glad to report these systems are holding up well but should be avoided near areas of potential moisture. Glued type floaters require the application of Titebond adhesive into the groove of the boards when installing. The consensus favors glued type floating over others.
Floating floors need expansion area as do other types of installations. Often misinformed salespeople confuse laminate flooring expansion with hardwood or bamboo. Laminate manufacturers use 5/16" as a guide. Our suggestion; play it safe and allow as much expansion as possible. Small layouts or square rooms may only need 3/8" expansion, but if the installation flows into other rooms and runs in excess of 40 feet or thereabouts, more expansion area should be allowed. Do not butt or install any floating systems against a fixed object such as fireplace hearths, columns and the like. Failure to heed this advice will result in tenting or buckled flooring.
Glue Down Floors
Across the website you'll find we don't consider gluedown installations for do it yourselfers. But we realize many aredetermined. If considering such, it is important to use the recommended adhesive! With many brands being sold without installation specifications, what is one to do?
Manufacturers that do make the effort, specify urethane type adhesives such as Bostiks (example shown above). Water based adhesives should be avoided! Our suggestion; buy the more expensive urethane glue and sleep better at night. The others will cause severe cupping within a matter of days and your new floor could be permanently ruined.
Installation Costs? Protect As You Go
Labor rates for installation follow closely with that of common wood floors but will vary from one region to another, including your hometown. As with any prefinished floor, care should be given priority, especially during the installation process. Always keep work areas clean of debris and cover already completed areas with cardboard, masonite board or other thicker protective materials and sweep frequently.
Other Thoughts
In earlier years we heard numerous complaints about bamboo and their performance. Often a salesperson not familiar with the product is to blame and not the product itself. Many put too much emphasis on the durability as being almost indestructible; harder than oak or maple and more. The complaints reminded us of the same when laminate flooring became popular in the mid to late 'nineties.
There are differences in hardness, an often used selling point. As you'll notice on other pages, not all products are the same. Some will be more consistent in color from one board to the next while others can offer a wide variation (example above). With any type of bamboo or wood floor, always utilize three or four cartons when installing to obtain a better distribution of color.

Installing Bamboo Floors - Installation Tips
Life would be some much easier if we all had magicians in the family. You know someone who could levitate the furniture while rolling out our new vinyl flooring and then, with a mere wiggle of the nose, the job would be done! We all know it's not that easy and it can be stressful. But knowledge is power. Here's our list of what you can expect before, during and after installation.
The No-Stress Pro
Sure your ex-girlfriend's brother's uncle can do this for you wholesale, but trust your retailer to recommend a professional to install your new flooring. It's not an easy process. In fact, even the best Do-It-Yourselfers should resist the urge.
Click here to find a professional vinyl flooring installer in your area.
The Shape of Your Substrate
The surface on which the vinyl flooring will be laid is called the substrate. Are you installing over wood, concrete or old vinyl? Each has its own special preparation. Your substrate may require an underlayment. No, not an undergarment but it is an additional layer. An underlayment will add height to your floor and may affect your appliances and counters.
In order for your warranty to be upheld, many manufacturers require moisture testing if you are installing vinyl over concrete. Make sure your installer can do this for you.
And if you are still thinking about doing this yourself, only a true professional will be able to tell if you can install your new vinyl over your old vinyl. Be sure to ask.
Hows your subfloor?
Your existingsubfloor may need to be prepared to receive the vinyl flooring, or a new subfloor may be required. We suggest you discuss this with your retailer and, if subfloor work is necessary, that it be done by qualified professionals. It is important that the subfloor be as clean and level as possible. That helps insure your new vinyl flooring will be beautiful and well supported.
Installation Methods
There are three methods used to install vinyl flooring depending on the manufacturer and the style:
Before the Big Day
Call a friend, hire a team, do whatever you need to do, but make sure you remove furniture and other stuff from the room in which your new vinyl flooring will be installed. You probably dont want installers handling your precious things and they may charge you extra for the opportunity.
If you have gas appliances, contact the Gas Company about safely disconnecting and reconnecting these pieces. Ask your retailer about disconnecting and reconnecting such items as icemakers, stereo equipment and computers; and the removal of heavy items like pianos.
Also, consult with your retailer to determine if you will be charged to have your toilet moved out and replaced if your are putting new flooring in your bathroom. If they cant do it, you may need a plumber.
Good Temps
The area of installation must be climate controlled (heated or air conditioned). Indoor humidity should be maintained between 45-65%.
The Old Flooring
Will your new flooring be installed over your existing floor covering, or do you want your existing floors or carpets removed before the new one is put in? Removal of old flooring or carpeting can be time consuming and someone has to haul it away and dispose of it responsibly. Be sure to discuss the situation with your installer and assume that at least one day will be spent on removal, cleanup and preparation.
Choose a Trim
Doors
Interior doors often have space at the bottom to accommodate new flooring. If yours do, then youre good to go. If yours dont or theyre cut for something lower than the floor youre installing, you may need a qualified carpenter to cut or shave the bottom of each affected door. Check with your installer about their door policy.
Clean Up
Vinyl flooring installation results in lots of trash old carpets or floors, plastic wrapping, remnants, fast food containers. Talk to your retailer or installer about his or her clean up policy and what is done with remnants. You may want to save some leftover pieces of vinyl for future repairs just in case.
Take A Day Off
Its a good idea to be home on the day your new floor is installed. Inevitably, questions will be asked. Decisions will need to be made. And nobody has an eye for the details of your home like you do. So take a vacation day, call in sick, work from home just be there.
Watch From A Distance
Razor blades and stringy glue can make your vinyl installation area hazardous to the health of your children and pets. Find a comfortable space in another room or outdoors while the work is taking place.
Conduct A Walk-Thru
Before your installer leaves, walk through the installation area together to ensure that every last detail meets or exceeds your expectations. Ask questions and make sure that you approve of both the product and the installation before making your final payment.
After the Install
Madness to the Method
Final Tips
The hard part is over. Its time to relax and enjoy your new floor.

Installing laminate flooring is one of the easiest home remodeling projects that the average homeowner can do themselves. In most cases, you should be able to complete a room within a single day -- or less, depending on the type of product you're using.
All laminate flooring is installed as a "floating" floor - meaning it is laid on top of your existing surface without being glued down or attached in any way. When you fit together your planks, you must remember not to make a perfect wall-to-wall floor - leave a small gap along all walls to allow for any expansion caused by humidity and heat, and cover the gap with baseboard moulding.
Laminate flooring planks (or tiles) come with locking tongue-and-groove designs so they fit perfectly together.
Before beginning the job, however, you will also need to put down an underlayment of cork, foam or similar product to cushion the floor and absorb sound. Some laminate flooring brands come with the underlayment already attached, eliminating one more installation step!
All manufacturers provide detailed instructions to make the job go smoothly. Make sure to follow those instructions closely, or you may void your product warranty.
Installing laminate flooring has never been easier, thanks to some recent design innovations.
Do-it-yourselfers now have three choices when purchasing laminate flooring:
Traditional planks that are glued together according to the manufacturers' specifications. This forms an incredibly secure bond, but can be time-consuming and require extra time for cleanup.
Pre-glued planks that you wipe down with water (to activate the glue) before setting into place.
Glueless flooring that is held in place by a variety of locking mechanisms or joints attached to the underside of the planks. Today's glueless brands are as secure traditional laminate flooring but often are more costly.
In the end, your choice may depend on your budget, your time available and your personal preference. Some do-it-yourselfers like the challenge of installing flooring with glue.
On the other hand, if you choose a glueless variety, there will be no cleanup and you can begin using the floor the second the final board snaps into place!

Hardwood Flooring
Wood floors are really the foundation on which Flooring.org is built. Hi I'm Eric Hurst, the founder of Flooring.org. I got my start in the flooring business in 1998 when I began sanding, finishing and installing hardwood floors in the family business. Now 14 years later, with the help of some great people on my team, and the grace of my Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, Flooring.org is continuously growing as a leading source for hardwood floors on the internet.
Hardwood flooring is considered by many to be the most desirable type of floor to be had. Because wood flooring is a natural, organic product, literally there are no two boards alike. Every single plank of a wood floor is unique, never repeating a grain, and every piece varies in color, however slightly, from the next. Because of it's natural organic properties, wood is the perfect canvas upon which to create a totall unique flooring product. Whether the wood is stained (nearly any color imaginable can be achieved with wood stains and aniline dyes) or texture the wood using methods like hand scraping, distressing or wire brushing, the designs that can be achieved with hardwood floors are virtually limitless.
If you haven't already, take a moment to browse over our selection of hardwood flooring products using the menu above. You'll find a huge selection of first quality wood floors from reputable manufacturers at prices that are more than competitive. We're also confident that you'll find the customer service experience at Flooring.org to be unmatched by any other flooring dealer, either local or online!
We offer a large selection of laminate flooring from several major manufacturers. Laminate has become a prominent flooring option for residential and commercial space because of it's durability and it's overall affordability including lower labor and material costs compared to most other types of hard surface flooring. We offer first quality laminate floors from trusted names like Armstrong, Balterio, Bruce, Quickstep, Home Legend Laminate,
Some things to consider when shopping for laminate floors are durability (verified by an "AC" rating from 1 to 6, with AC6 being the most durable), price (be sure to shop around) and of course style. One thing to keep in mind with laminate is that while it is very durable and scrath resistant, it is also a "throw away" floor, meaning once it has worn out, there is nothing you can do but throw it out and replace it. So if the budget allows, you may want to consider investing in a real wood floor that can be sanded and refinished when it starts to look worn.
Did you know that Bamboo is actually a grass? Well it's true, bamboo is technically a wood, however it is harder than some woods, making it viable option when considering your new flooring material. There is a huge variety of bamboo flooring on the market, so be careful and do your research to avoid ending up with an inferior floor made from prematurely harvested bamboo, or finished using a poor quality finish that will scratch too easily. If you choose a bamboo floor from a reputable manufacturer like Wellmade Bamboo, Hawa Bamboo or Home Legend Bamboo, just to name a few.
Since bamboo floors have become so popular in the last decade, the variety of designs available on this renewable platform have really exploded. Bamboo floors are now available in every style you could find in any wood floor, and then some! Bamboo floors come in hand scraped styles as well as wire-brushed, french bleed staining techniques, any color you could possibly imagine, and a variety of different thicknesses and construction types. There is also a bamboo floor to fit nearly any budget, and there is a bamboo flooring product to fit almost any level of installation skills for the do-it-yourselfer!
Cork floors have increased their market presence dramatically over the last several years. Because they are eco-friendly and highly renewable, they are a great choice for "green" flooring. When cork is harvested, it does not kill the tree that it came from, and more cork grows in it's place and the process can repeat itself many times, making cork one of the world's most renewable resources.
Cork flooring is now available in both tiles and planks, so you can create a plank floor look like that of a hardwood floor, or a tile look like that of a marble or porcelain floor. Cork comes in a veriety of different patterns which are made by the different methods of processing and compressing the cork after harvesting. Some of the more reputable cork floor manufacturers include WE Cork, APC Cork, Home Legend Cork and Wicanders to name a few. You can shop and compare cork floors from these, and other manufacturers by visiting our cork flooring section. And of course we are available by telephone or live chat to answer your questions!
While there are a few types of flooring that are growing in popularity in recent years, there is no other category of floor materials that is growing in popularity at the pace that Vinyl flooring is. Recent developments in printing technology have enable manufacturers to make vinyl floors that are more beautiful, and more realistic in comparison to the materials they emmulate; namely wood and tile.
The main types of vinyl floors on the market are Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) and Vinyl Plank (pretty self explanatory). LVT is used primarily in commercial applications like hospitals, schools, hotels, assisted living facilities and really any public building that needs flooring that is durable, beautiful and easy to maintain. For residential use, vinyl plank is the primary choice as of late. Vinyl Plank is available in a huge variety of wood prints to emmulate nearly any wood flooring product you might find. Vinyl Plank floors are great for the do-it-yourself installer, as most of this type of flooring can be installed using the floating method (click together) or peel and stick, both of which are pretty easy installation methods.
Stone tiles have been a popular flooring material for literally thousands of years. Stone is readily available in many different compositions such as marble, travertine & granite and is harvested from many different parts of the world. Ceramic & Porcelain tiles are man made products with a natural stone image printed on the surface, providing a more economical alternative to real stone floors.
Tiles are installed using thinset mortar, and a variety of different types and qualities are available to choose from. Thinset is spread to the subfloor using a notched trowel, and then the tiles are set in place. While tile is definitely not the easiest type of flooring to install, it is definitely a project you can tackle with the right amount of time and patience. The odds are you know someone that has installed tile floors before and they could help you, or at least offer some pointers.
One of the smartes inventions in the history of carpeting is Carpet Tiles. I think we've all had that moment where you've watched in horror as the red juice slips out of your child's hand, or the dinner plate slides off the table face down on the carpet. And we all know that those stains seem to always rear their ugly heads no matter how you go about cleaning them. Well thanks to carpet tiles, that accident doesn't have to ruin your entire floor! Just pull up the effected tiles, and drop new ones in! You can do the carpet tile replacement yourself, and you can save thousands of dollars by not replacing your entire carpet just because of one accident.
If you've faced the fact that your staircase is out of date and in desperate need of some remodeling, we have the right products to get your staircase brought up to date, without sending your bank account down the stairs. We carry stair parts in a huge variety of woods including oak, hickory, maple, brazilian cherry, brazilian walnut, tigerwood, brazilian teak and many more! We have everything you need to update your staircase including treads and risers, stringers and skirtboard, handrail, balusters and accessories.
If the only part of your staircase that needs a facelift is the balusters, you may want to consider using our iron balusters to dress up your stairway easily and affordably. We offer a huge selection of styles and colors and our prices on iron balusters are beyond competitive, making purchasing your new metal spindles from us both easy and cost-effective!
