Bamboo Floor Installation – CaliBamboo GreenShoots - January 17, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

The goal of acclimation is to allow the moisture content (MC) of the flooring to fully adjust to its new surroundings before installation.

    1. Determine Normal Living Conditions Ideal interior environmental conditions vary from region to region and jobsite to jobsite. It is the installers responsibility to know what the ideal climate conditions are and customize the acclimation of the floor around those conditions. For a general view of moisture content averages by region, see the map below.

    2. Control Home Conditions Accordingly Acclimation should occur at normal living conditions. Before opening the cartons, the indoor environment should reflect the room temperature and relative humidity levels expected to be present before, during, and most importantly, after installation. Operate temperature / humidity control systems as normal. Allow normal ventilation through rooms.

    3. Cross-Stacking Flooring Planks For maximum stability, Cali Bamboo recommends cross-stacking the flooring at the installation site while it acclimates. Remove the flooring from boxes and cross stack planks at least 4 off the subfloor with even spacing between planks to allow for complete and even air-circulation around the flooring.

    4. Acceptable Areas for Acclimation Acclimate the flooring as close to the center of the installation area as possible. Do not store flooring next to outside walls, in direct sunlight, near air vents or under conditions that dont reflect the normal home environment. Garages, and exterior patios, for example, are not acceptable areas to store wood flooring during acclimation.

    5. Determine Appropriate Acclimation Time Frame Cali Bamboo flooring should be allowed to acclimate on the job site for a minimum of 5 days. Extended conditioning may be necessary depending on the climate. For regions or conditions that are extremely dry, humid or highly-fluctuating, 2 or more weeks may be necessary for acclimation.

Flooring Cost Calculator – Estimate Installation and … - January 17, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

How You Can Calculate Flooring Costs and Price On Your Own

Estimating your flooring costs is like anything else, it isnt difficult if you know how. All you have to do is calculate how much your materials will cost and how much your labor will cost.

Do you know what kind of flooring materials youre going to be using? If so, have you already picked out the style of that flooring? There are many options in the way of colors, finishes, etc which can make your cost per square foot go up or down. The first step in estimating your floor replacement project is to narrow down your choice of flooring material. When you have between one and three it is easier to do the math and understand the costs involved. At that point, simply multiply the square footage by the flooring cost per square foot to arrive at the total materials cost. We recommend adding 10% to this due to incidental needs like curved edges which mean you need a whole new piece, or having to cut the flooring due to the edge needed for a wall.

Calculation of labor isnt as straightforward as estimating the materials. The reason is that what contractors might charge to remove the current flooring, especially in cases of tile and hardwood, can vary wildly. Installation costs can vary just as much, so we would recommend contacting 2-3 contractors and asking how much they charge per square foot for removal and installation of flooring. Depending on your square footage you might get a discount (usually for projects over 500 sq ft).

As an example, lets say Im replacing my carpeting with tile flooring. The tile Im installing is $1.50 per square foot and Im redoing my kitchen which is 250 square feet. A contractor has quoted me a flat $150 feet for ripping up and hauling away my used carpet, and will install the new tile flooring for $3 per square foot. Lets figure materials first. $1.50 per square foot for the tile multiplied by 250 square feet, which equals $375. Add in 10% and the total for flooring materials comes to $412.50.

For labor, $3 times 250 square feet equals $750. No need to add 10% here. Add in the removal and haul away for the carpeting and the total labor cost is $900.

The total flooring installation price will be the sum of $412.50 for the materials plus $900 for the labor therefore the estimated cost is $1,312.50 (plus applicable taxes).

    Flooring Installation – discountfloor.com - January 17, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Installation is the most critical step to insure the overall performance and appearance of your new floor. You should contract a floor covering installer much like you would a building contractor. A reliable installer should carry insurance, both liability and workmen's compensation. Atdiscountfloor.com we want to help you find the best installer available. We offer these guidelines to help you make a more informed decision on selecting your installer:

1: The first and best way is through referral. Possibly a friend or relative, maybe even your builder, has had floor covering installed recently. Even if this option is available, get more references and verify them. Possibly even look at more of their work.

2: The second way and could very well be a first choice is to call the CFI (Certified Floor Covering Installers) for a referral. They will furnish phone numbers for independent certified installers in your area. Certified installers usually charge a bit more but will follow all the guidelines set forth by the Carpet and Rug Institute.

3: The third way is to check your local yellow pages under the listing "Carpet and Rug - Installers". Again, we can't stress enough, the importance of referral and verification.

You can receive a copy of installation guidelines (commercial or residential) form the Carpet and Rug Institute. http://www.carpet-rug.org

Installing bamboo follows closely in how traditional hardwood is installed, but one thing is clear; be careful. Why? Some bamboos are quite soft in that they can ding and dent quite easily. Probably the best advice here is protect the floor after each section is installed. More on this topic is covered below.

With any type of installation, critical steps to success should be performed before starting. These include acclimation, moisture testing, and proper floor preparation. Generally the lack of floor preparation is one of the leading reasons for failure. In a nutshell, all subfloors should be flat while allowing a tolerance of 3/16" over a span of 8-10 feet. For more on all these topics, follow my floor preparation articles.

    Nailed or Stapled

If you have a wood subfloor the direct fastening method seems to be the preference. Originally many manufacturers did not provide specifications, rather they assumed most installers were safe in following standard methods which included stapling. In recent years more guidelines have surfaced that includes the use of 18 gauge cleat nails over staples that eliminate or cut down on tongue splitting; a result that can create squeaky floors.

Products now being recommended by larger manufacturers include the Powernail 50P or Primatech Q550 specifically when it comes to the harder, more popular stand flooring varieties.

Guidelines for nail down procedures should be similar to that of common hardwoods. Fasten every 6-8" on center (OC) and approximately 2" away from each end joint. Always keep a good eye on nail penetration. These tools are pneumatic and fasteners will not seat properly if the air pressure is too low or high. Failure to monitor can result in crushed board tongues (high pressure) that can result in squeaking, or adjacent board surface dimples or bumps (low pressure) once the floor is installed.

    Floating Floors

Too often I hear, "they said we could float this floor." Not all products can be installed by the floating floor method, specifically solid products. Wider engineered or cross ply products should only be considered for floating. Floating floors are installed over various types of underlayment providing a cushioned feel. Some more popular basic underlayments include three in one (3-1) types that provide cushion and moisture protection for concrete subfloors.

Click or glue? Click or snap lock products have become popular with the DIY crowd in laminate, hardwood, and bamboo. How long they hold up has always been on many installers minds. As of this update, September 20, 2014, we're glad to report these systems are holding up well but should be avoided near areas of potential moisture. Glued type floaters require the application of Titebond adhesive into the groove of the boards when installing. The consensus favors glued type floating over others.

Floating floors need expansion area as do other types of installations. Often misinformed salespeople confuse laminate flooring expansion with hardwood or bamboo. Laminate manufacturers use 5/16" as a guide. Our suggestion; play it safe and allow as much expansion as possible. Small layouts or square rooms may only need 3/8" expansion, but if the installation flows into other rooms and runs in excess of 40 feet or thereabouts, more expansion area should be allowed. Do not butt or install any floating systems against a fixed object such as fireplace hearths, columns and the like. Failure to heed this advice will result in tenting or buckled flooring.

    Glue Down Floors

Across the website you'll find we don't consider gluedown installations for do it yourselfers. But we realize many aredetermined. If considering such, it is important to use the recommended adhesive! With many brands being sold without installation specifications, what is one to do?

Manufacturers that do make the effort, specify urethane type adhesives such as Bostiks (example shown above). Water based adhesives should be avoided! Our suggestion; buy the more expensive urethane glue and sleep better at night. The others will cause severe cupping within a matter of days and your new floor could be permanently ruined.

Installation Costs? Protect As You Go

Labor rates for installation follow closely with that of common wood floors but will vary from one region to another, including your hometown. As with any prefinished floor, care should be given priority, especially during the installation process. Always keep work areas clean of debris and cover already completed areas with cardboard, masonite board or other thicker protective materials and sweep frequently.

    Other Thoughts

In earlier years we heard numerous complaints about bamboo and their performance. Often a salesperson not familiar with the product is to blame and not the product itself. Many put too much emphasis on the durability as being almost indestructible; harder than oak or maple and more. The complaints reminded us of the same when laminate flooring became popular in the mid to late 'nineties.

There are differences in hardness, an often used selling point. As you'll notice on other pages, not all products are the same. Some will be more consistent in color from one board to the next while others can offer a wide variation (example above). With any type of bamboo or wood floor, always utilize three or four cartons when installing to obtain a better distribution of color.

Vinyl / Resilient Flooring Installation – WFCA - January 17, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Life would be some much easier if we all had magicians in the family. You know someone who could levitate the furniture while rolling out our new vinyl flooring and then, with a mere wiggle of the nose, the job would be done! We all know it's not that easy and it can be stressful. But knowledge is power. Here's our list of what you can expect before, during and after installation.

    The No-Stress Pro

Sure your ex-girlfriend's brother's uncle can do this for you wholesale, but trust your retailer to recommend a professional to install your new flooring. It's not an easy process. In fact, even the best Do-It-Yourselfers should resist the urge.

Click here to find a professional vinyl flooring installer in your area.

    The Shape of Your Substrate

The surface on which the vinyl flooring will be laid is called the substrate. Are you installing over wood, concrete or old vinyl? Each has its own special preparation. Your substrate may require an underlayment. No, not an undergarment but it is an additional layer. An underlayment will add height to your floor and may affect your appliances and counters.

In order for your warranty to be upheld, many manufacturers require moisture testing if you are installing vinyl over concrete. Make sure your installer can do this for you.

And if you are still thinking about doing this yourself, only a true professional will be able to tell if you can install your new vinyl over your old vinyl. Be sure to ask.

    Hows your subfloor?

Your existingsubfloor may need to be prepared to receive the vinyl flooring, or a new subfloor may be required. We suggest you discuss this with your retailer and, if subfloor work is necessary, that it be done by qualified professionals. It is important that the subfloor be as clean and level as possible. That helps insure your new vinyl flooring will be beautiful and well supported.

    Installation Methods

There are three methods used to install vinyl flooring depending on the manufacturer and the style:

    Before the Big Day

Call a friend, hire a team, do whatever you need to do, but make sure you remove furniture and other stuff from the room in which your new vinyl flooring will be installed. You probably dont want installers handling your precious things and they may charge you extra for the opportunity.

If you have gas appliances, contact the Gas Company about safely disconnecting and reconnecting these pieces. Ask your retailer about disconnecting and reconnecting such items as icemakers, stereo equipment and computers; and the removal of heavy items like pianos.

Also, consult with your retailer to determine if you will be charged to have your toilet moved out and replaced if your are putting new flooring in your bathroom. If they cant do it, you may need a plumber.

    Good Temps

The area of installation must be climate controlled (heated or air conditioned). Indoor humidity should be maintained between 45-65%.

    The Old Flooring

Will your new flooring be installed over your existing floor covering, or do you want your existing floors or carpets removed before the new one is put in? Removal of old flooring or carpeting can be time consuming and someone has to haul it away and dispose of it responsibly. Be sure to discuss the situation with your installer and assume that at least one day will be spent on removal, cleanup and preparation.

    Choose a Trim

    Doors

Interior doors often have space at the bottom to accommodate new flooring. If yours do, then youre good to go. If yours dont or theyre cut for something lower than the floor youre installing, you may need a qualified carpenter to cut or shave the bottom of each affected door. Check with your installer about their door policy.

    Clean Up

Vinyl flooring installation results in lots of trash old carpets or floors, plastic wrapping, remnants, fast food containers. Talk to your retailer or installer about his or her clean up policy and what is done with remnants. You may want to save some leftover pieces of vinyl for future repairs just in case.

    Take A Day Off

Its a good idea to be home on the day your new floor is installed. Inevitably, questions will be asked. Decisions will need to be made. And nobody has an eye for the details of your home like you do. So take a vacation day, call in sick, work from home just be there.

    Watch From A Distance

Razor blades and stringy glue can make your vinyl installation area hazardous to the health of your children and pets. Find a comfortable space in another room or outdoors while the work is taking place.

    Conduct A Walk-Thru

Before your installer leaves, walk through the installation area together to ensure that every last detail meets or exceeds your expectations. Ask questions and make sure that you approve of both the product and the installation before making your final payment.

    After the Install

    Madness to the Method

    Final Tips

The hard part is over. Its time to relax and enjoy your new floor.

Installing Laminate Flooring | Installation Tips and Advice - October 16, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Installing laminate flooring is one of the easiest home remodeling projects that the average homeowner can do themselves. In most cases, you should be able to complete a room within a single day -- or less, depending on the type of product you're using.

All laminate flooring is installed as a "floating" floor - meaning it is laid on top of your existing surface without being glued down or attached in any way. When you fit together your planks, you must remember not to make a perfect wall-to-wall floor - leave a small gap along all walls to allow for any expansion caused by humidity and heat, and cover the gap with baseboard moulding.

Laminate flooring planks (or tiles) come with locking tongue-and-groove designs so they fit perfectly together.

Before beginning the job, however, you will also need to put down an underlayment of cork, foam or similar product to cushion the floor and absorb sound. Some laminate flooring brands come with the underlayment already attached, eliminating one more installation step!

All manufacturers provide detailed instructions to make the job go smoothly. Make sure to follow those instructions closely, or you may void your product warranty.

Installing laminate flooring has never been easier, thanks to some recent design innovations.

Do-it-yourselfers now have three choices when purchasing laminate flooring:

Traditional planks that are glued together according to the manufacturers' specifications. This forms an incredibly secure bond, but can be time-consuming and require extra time for cleanup.

Pre-glued planks that you wipe down with water (to activate the glue) before setting into place.

Glueless flooring that is held in place by a variety of locking mechanisms or joints attached to the underside of the planks. Today's glueless brands are as secure traditional laminate flooring but often are more costly.

In the end, your choice may depend on your budget, your time available and your personal preference. Some do-it-yourselfers like the challenge of installing flooring with glue.

On the other hand, if you choose a glueless variety, there will be no cleanup and you can begin using the floor the second the final board snaps into place!
