A floor is the walking surface of a room or vehicle. Floors vary from simple dirt in a cave to many-layered surfaces using modern technology. Floors may be stone, wood, bamboo, metal, or any other material that can support the expected load.
The levels of a building are often referred to as floors although a more proper term is story or storey.
Floors typically consist of a subfloor for support and a floor covering used to give a good walking surface. In modern buildings the subfloor often has electrical wiring, plumbing, and other services built in. As floors must meet many needs, some essential to safety, floors are built to strict building codes in the first world.
Where a special floor structure like a floating floor is laid upon another floor then both may be referred to as subfloors.
Special floor structures are used for a number of purposes:
Floor covering is a term to generically describe any finish material applied over a floor structure to provide a walking surface. Flooring is the general term for a permanent covering of a floor, or for the work of installing such a floor covering. Both terms are used interchangeably but floor covering refers more to loose-laid materials.
Materials almost always classified as floor covering include carpet, area rugs, and resilient flooring such as linoleum or vinyl flooring. Materials commonly called flooring include wood flooring, laminated wood, ceramic tile, stone, terrazzo, and various seamless chemical floor coatings.[1]
The choice of material for floor covering is affected by factors such as cost, endurance, noise insulation, comfort and cleaning effort. Some types of flooring must not be installed below grade (lower than ground level), and laminate or hardwood should be avoided where there may be moisture or condensation.
The subfloor may be finished in a way that makes it usable without any extra work, see:
There are a number of special features that may be used to ornament a floor or perform a useful service. Examples include Floor medallions which provide a decorative centerpiece of a floor design, or Gratings used to drain water or to rub dirt off shoes.

DECATUR A problem with moisture under the building at Eisenhower High School means that vinyl flooring may not be installed in the lowest level until spring.
At the end of the school board meeting Tuesday, board President Brian Hodges asked for a report on construction because an open house is scheduled for Dec. 18. Project Manager Phil Hazenfield and Mike Sotiroff, director of buildings and grounds, told the board that the moisture prevents the adhesive from setting up, and until the source is pinpointed and corrected, the flooring has to wait.
Hazenfield said the district should not have to pay for the increased costs of correcting the problem. The general contractor believes there is an underground spring causing the moisture, though Sotiroff said he doesnt agree.
The open house and the planned move-in process over the winter break will go forward, even if students have to contend with a concrete floor in the lower level for the spring semester, Hodges said.
In other business, the board approved a tax levy 10 cents lower than last years. Director of Business Affairs Todd Covault said that means that for a $100,000 home, the property tax bill will be $32 lower this year.
The board also voted to abate property taxes for the bonds issued in 2011 to pay for the high school renovations. Sales tax revenues are adequate to make the payments on those bonds, Covault said.
Robertson Charter School CEO Bishop G.E. Livingston and Principal Cordell Ingram gave their annual report at Tuesdays meeting, also. Enrollment is 332 students.
You have received our audit and can tell that we had a good year, Livingston said. We had a higher surplus, because in the previous year, we had a reduction in funding due to your budget cuts, so we budgeted very conservatively, and it turned out well for us. We had challenges this summer that we had to address.
The roof of the building on Geddes Avenue has to be replaced, he said, and because of their conservative budget, they were able to have the worst half replaced for about $200,000. The other half will cost a little more, and they are figuring out how to pay for it now, he said.

So you've decided to invest in a home gym. Good for you! Before you start purchasing weights, equipment, etc., it's a good idea to decide what type of flooring you'll need.
If you're looking for a material to cover and protect your floors from free weights and heavy exercise equipment, rubber is the most popular product there is. Found in commercial and residential gyms around the world, rubber flooring is a relatively inexpensive and effective solution for your gym. However, it is extremely heavy and provides little to no cushion for aerobic activities. For weight rooms or treadmill areas, it will fit the bill nicely. For an aerobics area, you will want to consider a more ergonomically friendly solution such as high-density EVA foam.
The most popular rubber flooring is rolled because it tends to be the least expensive option available. Rolls are typically four feet wide and cut to various lengths depending on the manufacturer. Installing these rolls can be cumbersome and challenging because rubber is quite heavy. You will definitely want provisions in place before you tackle a rolled rubber installation. However, if you have the people to help you, this is the most economical option available.
Another option is rubber mats. These are available in a various sizes and thicknesses in both interlocking or straight-edge options. Rubber mats tend to be much easier to install but they are, as a general rule, more expensive than rolls.
Both of these rubber flooring options are an effective flooring for your home gym and will probably last you the life of your equipment.
Some additional points of note: Contrary to popular belief, rubber is not waterproof. Therefore, it is not an ideal product for outdoor use. It is also not the best product if you're putting your home gym in a garage. This is because rubber reacts to many solvents and liquids such as gas or oil. These can break down and destroy your floor. Car tires also tend to chew up rubber flooring.

Our flooring installation method will depend on the type of floor youve chosen solid wood, engineered, square edged, parquet or laminate flooring. It will also depend on the condition and materials of your subfloor.
The principle methods of floor installation that we use are secret nailing and gluing.
We may need to do some preparation on your subfloor, and we also install soundproofing, insulation, and damp-proofing membranes beneath your floor if it is needed. (Soundproofing is a legal requirement in flats, and damp-proofing is a necessity when laying a floor directly onto cement.)
Once weve completed laying the floor, we can seal or oil it according to the final result youre after.
The time it takes to lay a floor will vary greatly from project to project, but we know how precious time and schedules are in building projects of any nature and we pride ourselves in being efficient and meeting our pre-agreed deadlines.
We always leave your rooms clean and ready to use after any flooring installation.
Secret nailing is the traditional flooring installation method to use if you are installing a solid wood floor. Because solid wood floors expand and contract more than engineered wooden floors they need to be able to move, otherwise the floor will warp. Nailing down the planks allows for this movement.
But some solid wood floors can be glued down or floated over concrete as long as the sub floor is well prepared and the appropriate damp-proof membrane is used.
It also depends on the type of wood, and the width and thickness of the planks as to whether these alternative installation methods are suitable.
Engineered flooring is very flexible in the ways it can be installed. But the flooring installation method that you choose will be because of other factors like the state of your subfloor, the position of the room, if any type of insulation is required, or if you have underfloor heating.
