Sophomore students Ian Keppler, Joe Reidl and Kyle Katsios stand in front of a doghouse they built at class in their building trades class.
Members of the freshman class stand with a doghouse they built in their building trades class.
SPARTA Building Trades teacher Steve Wagner of Wantage has been donating doghouses to local animal rescues since 2008.
Its a part of the curriculum, Wagner said. It gives students an excellent breakdown of all phases of construction from flooring to 2x4 framing, trim work, staining, painting and roof installation.
Wagner came up with the idea to donate doghouses built by Vo-Tech students after encountering One Step Closer Animal Rescue volunteers at the Newton Walmart, during a bake sale event to raise funds.
The students are doing something good, and at the same time, learning part of the trade, Wagner said. Besides construction, building trades also covers electricity, plumbing, dry-wall installation, low-pressure boiler systems and industrial maintenance. Wagner explains most of the materials used to build the doghouses are either donated or recycled, and that all building trades students freshmen through senior contribute to the construction of the doghouses.
Wagner builds about two houses a year with his students. In the past, the classes have donated the doghouses to the following non-profit, no-kill rescues: Pets Alive Animal Sanctuary in Middletown, N.Y., Father Johns Animal House in Lafayette and O.S.C.A.R. in Sparta.
O.S.C.A.R., which wasnt in need of a doghouse, referred Wagner to Pets Alive, who is this years recipient of the doghouse that was built in November and December.
It is quite an experience," Freshman Brandon Hall, 14, of Wantage said. "There is a lot to do when building a doghouse. I liked framing the walls and roof the best.

Coswick Hardwood Inc. is thrilled to launch a new line of European-style wood flooring, Chevron collection. The new line will be presented at the Surfaces show in Las Vegas January 28-30th, 2014, and will be available in North America in early 2014.
The distinguishing characteristic of Chevron flooring is the 45 degree diagonal cut at the end of each plank that allows individual pieces to be laid in a zig-zag pattern. Chevron style calls for impeccable geometric precision, which, in turn, makes it a more elegant, visually rich surface, as well as allows for more variation in installation patterns.
Coswick Chevron collection includes nine designer floors, manufactured from white oak, ash, and American walnut and available in several surface finishes. Use of 2-layer T&G engineered technology not only allows Coswick to manufacture a wider plank, but also ensures superb stability in a wide range of interiors, temperatures and climates.
Coswick is one of few hardwood flooring manufacturers to offer a full lifetime structural warranty on all engineered floors.
Historically, emergence of Chevron flooring signaled the evolution of more geometrically complex styles in flooring across Europe, said Mr. Vladimir Ianovski, founder of Coswick Hardwood Inc. Use of state-of-the-art technology to create the new Chevron collection allowed us to make the classic flooring style found in European palaces and chateaus available for just about any type of modern interior.
Chevron-style flooring is found in numerous palaces and chateaus across Europe, including the Louvre, royal palaces and medieval castles in the Loire Valley - Amboise, Villandry, Montsoreau, Saumur, Azay-le-Rideau, Langeais, Chambord, Chenonceau, Blois, Brissac and many more.

KUALA LUMPUR: Kanger International Bhd (Kanger International), a China-based bamboo maker which made its debut on the ACE market yesterday, seeks to list on the main board in two to three years.
It is in talks with local real estate developers and hotel operators to supply its products, with a hotel in Sabah having adopted its offerings, managing director Leng Xingmin told reporters after the share debut here yesterday.
The company is expanding into Malaysia in the wake of growing competition in China, a market where Alliance Research estimates to have 200 bamboo flooring makers.
Malaysia has abundant supplies of bamboo but no one is tapping the resource, Leng said.
Although the demand for bamboo across the world is expected to pick up five per cent every year amid calls for the adoption of greener materials in industries such as construction, the material is underutilised in Malaysia, Leng said.
The listing would help Kanger promote the use of bamboo and increase brand awareness, he added. Kanger currently operates two plants in China and plans to set up a manufacturing plan here after the completion of a feasibility study by mid-2014.
The plant would allow it secure more supplies for customers in Malaysia and China, Leng said, declining to offer investment figures.
According to Alliance Research, it is too early for investors to be excited as there are substantial execution risks due to the intense competition within the industry.
Despite the eco-friendliness of bamboo flooring, consumers generally prefer hard flooring such as tiles and marble due to their durability and ease of installation, it said in a note.
There is also increasing consumer concern on the potential health risk from formaldehyde-based adhesives used in bamboo flooring products, the research firmsaid.

Installation of Parquet Hardwood Floor -

Installation of Parquet Floors Job Site Inspection Storage and Handling Subfloor Requirements General Information on Adhesives Spreading the Adhesive Installing the Parquet Flooring Completing the Installation Sanding Stain and Finish Maintenance Installer/Owner Responsibility
Back to main F.A.Q.
Handle and unload with care. Store in a dry place being sure to provide at least a four-inch air space under cartons which are stored upon "on-grade" concrete floors. Flooring should not be delivered until the building has been closed in with windows and doors in place and until cement work, plastering and all other "wet" work is completed and dry. Concrete should be at least 60 days old. Solid oak parquet flooring should be stored in the environment in which it is expected to perform. Air conditioning/heating systems should be in place and in operation at least 14 days prior, during and after installation of the flooring. Check adhesive label for storage limitations.
If installing over inadequate, existing plywood subfloor consider installing plywood underlayment over existing subfloor. Standard 4 X 8 plywood sheet should be cut in four pieces and screwed to subfloor leaving small gap between the sheets to allow for expansion.
NOTE: Test several areas, especially near exterior walls and walls containing plumbing.
NOTE: A "DRY" SLAB, AS DEFINED BY THESE TESTS CAN BE WET AT OTHER TIMES OF THE YEAR. THESE TESTS DO NOT GUARANTEE A DRY SLAB. ALL CONCRETE SLABS SHOULD HAVE A MINIMUM OF 6 MIL POLY FILM MOISTURE BARRIER BETWEEN THE GROUND AND THE CONCRETE
NOTE: When installing UNFINISHED SOLID WOOD PARQUET flooring, allow a minimum of 36 hours adhesive curing time before applying seals, stains and finishes to unfinished flooring. Trowel filling and fillers are required to reduce the possibility of panalization caused by the finish "gluing" the slats together. Test the moisture content of the wood in accordance with the stain/finish manufacturer's recommendations. Avoid installing from the surface of the flooring. If necessary distribute weight using a kneeler board.
Maximum Adhesive Working Times:
Hold the trowel at a minimum 45 angle (figure below) firmly against the subfloor to obtain a 50-60 sq. ft. per gallon spread rate.
Please follow technical specification for working time for adhesive.

WISA Solutions Remodels Basement -
December 20, 2013 by
Mr HomeBuilder
Lorton, VA (PRWEB) December 20, 2013
WISA Solutions was awarded a basement remodel in Fairfax Station, Virginia. This was an entire basement remodel that included a new bathroom, flooring, bar and gym.
The first phase of this project was the demolition. All of the flooring was taken up along with a complete demolition of the bathroom and bedroom.
The first part of the remodel WISA started was the bathroom. The bathroom remodel included a new tub, tile, vanity, hardware, toilet, lighting and fixtures. The homeowner picked out all of these products from WISA's showroom with the assistance of a WISA designer.
Once the bathroom remodel was complete, WISA began painting the rest of the basement. Along with painting, WISA did trim work and crown molding throughout the entertaining room of the basement.
The next phase after the painting and trim work was the flooring. The homeowner picked out laminate flooring from WISA's showroom for the entertaining room. The laminate flooring was installed using a floating method which means no adhesive or nails were used in the installation. The existing bedroom was converted into a home gym which had thick rubber flooring installed that was glued onto the concrete sub floor.
After the flooring, WISA began building the bar in the entertaining area. The cabinetry was also from WISA's showroom. Granite was used as the countertop for this bar. WISA provided a free bar design for the homeowner so they could see the finished product on paper before proceeding with the work.
Once the bar was built and finished, the WISA project manager contacted the homeowner for a final walk through. During this phase, WISA addressed all questions or concerns by the homeowner.
WISA Solutions business hours are from 8AM-5PM weekdays and 10AM-2PM on Saturdays and by appointment with any time outside of that.
