Chinas rich are increasingly seeking answers to questions of destiny through the help of feng shui masters.

IN a classroom at Peking University School of Economics, the students pored over their calculations, just as countless preceding generations had done. But the people in this class were not regular scholars. Instead, they represented Chinas business elite, including chief executive officers of major companies, entrepreneurs and financiers.

All were busy divining their destinies at a feng shui class. They hoped to gain insight into the ancient Chinese method of geomancy, which has become an important part of the schools Executive Master of Business Administration programme.

Using a set formula in conjunction with their dates of birth, the students were attempting to discern their ming, or fate, including career and marriage prospects, and also to attract greater fortune by learning how to decorate their offices and align furniture in accordance with the basic tenets of feng shui.

The 43-year-old lecturer, Qi Yingjie, introduced himself via a slideshow as a feng shui master and, dressed in a traditional black tunic suit, he strolled between the desks as the students added, subtracted, multiplied and divided according to the formula.

Use the formula and you will discover your destiny, intoned the former farmer and vegetable vendor, as he lectured the class of executives.

During a break, the students surrounded him, firing off questions: Would it be bad feng shui to place a cupboard beside my bed?; My son loses his temper at home for no reason, can feng shui help solve the problem?; My wife and I often fight. Do I need to reconsider the feng shui of our apartment?

One particular question aroused Qis attention. The door of my apartment faces southwest and I put a bookshelf in the northwest corner of the room. Is that good feng shui? The question was asked by a middle-aged man as he showed the master the results of his calculations, an ornate gold watch glistening on his wrist.

Frowning with concentration, the master scanned the sheet of paper and announced: The door is fine, but you have to move the bookshelf from the northwest corner because your chart shows that it will suppress your future development.

Goldwatch wanted to ask more but the master was dragged off by a fan who wanted a photo taken with him.

Is feng shui the secret to a happier home life? The ancient Chinese might say so and some modern day Midwesterners too. What is feng shui? According to About.com:

Feng shui is an ancient art and science developed over 3,000 years ago in China. It is a complex body of knowledge that reveals how to balance the energies of any given space to assure health and good fortune for people inhabiting it.

There are many ways to use feng shui to tackle problems or challenges within a home.

I heard about feng shui expert Tracy Green of Fargo and invited her into my home to give it a whirl. In the video, youll see me interview her, but she spent a good part of our time interviewing me about my family life and challenges we faced. Almost immediately she asked me if I have trouble making decisions. I had to think about it for a while (just kidding) but the answer was a definitive yes. She says its not uncommon for people living in split level homes or bi-level homes to be indecisive since were faced with a decision about where to go immediately upon entering the home.

She also diagnosed that based upon the placement of my daughters bedrooms, they have more power in the home than they should (well, I could have told her that a long time ago).

Short of moving, what are the solutions to my problems and others? According to Feng Shui experts like Green and others, there are a few simple things you can do:

Clean out the clutter. Clutter blocks energy. Have you ever noticed how much lighter you and your house feel after putting your junk out on the curb during clean up week? Green says think about your desk at work, when its crowded with stuff, its hard to focus on anything.

Live with good quality air and light. Open the windows, have air purifying plants. Think about using full spectrum light.

While the Chinese New Year hasn't officially started yet, many have already welcomed what the Chinese calendar says is the Year of the Water Snake.

According to feng shui expert Tony Suvega on a report on GMA News TV's "Kape at Balita" on Monday, it's bound to be a good year moneywise for Filipinos based on the Philippines' location on the Lo Shu grid, a magic square used by feng shui astrologers and geomancers.

Suvega also said, however, that people still have to take caution this year because it is specifically the Year of the Black Female Water Snake.

"Kapag ang ahas ay itim ay makamandag. Kasi sensitibo 'yung snake eh. Makarinig lang ng sound 'yung snake aarangkada 'yan, may gagawing pangit 'yan," he said, though he noted that snakes are important because they represent passive money.

Suvega also cautioned those born between the years 1984 and 2004 against potential misfortune.

"Mayroon silang sakuna o mga bayolenteng situation na kinalaman sa bakal, so bakal pwedeng sasakyan, baril, bala, ganun," he said.

Still, the feng shui expert noted that these predictions are only a guide, and ultimately, it is up to the person to control his or her life.

Meanwhile, Maxima Tiu, another feng shui expert, said that the water snake can bring on disputes in politics, and, as in every year, floods.

"Ang snake, ang characteristic niya is tahimik siya, pero pagna-attack 'yan, grabe tayo. Water snake din siya, maybe sa mga government, may problema din sa mga politics, away-away, ganun. Tapos kasi water snake siya, baha din eh, may calamity din tayo," she said in a report on GMA News' "Unang Balita" on Monday.

"Basta we think positive, gaganda ang buhay natin," she added.
