Shuri Castle, its location and orientation of all buildings within its compound were all thoroughly vetted using Feng Shui when the original was constructed. The current restored castle was built in exactly same location.
Feng shui is a Chinese philosophical system aimed at harmonizing human existence with the surrounding environment.
Feng Shui spread to the world from China, especially to East and Southeast Asia. It was introduced to the Ryukyu Kingdom sometime at the end of the 14th century with early Chinese immigrants. Feng Shui, as written in Chinese and Japanese kanji characters, literally translates as wind (fuu) and water (sui).
Ishiganto stones are Feng Shui objects commonly used in Okinawa for the purpose of warding off evil spirits,
A Chinese writer and scholar Guo Pu during the Eastern Jin dynasty wrote book The Book of Burial that is considered to be the earliest source of Feng Shui doctrine.
Feng Shui sets the rules based on wind and water that control geographical conditions that in turn control the movement of Qi, a living energy or power invisible to the human eye. Since Guo Pu wrote the doctrine on Feng Shui, this method has been practiced in order to create and determine the most ideal environment and placement of important structures such as dwellings and tombs to ensure good fortune and protection against disasters.
According to records from the Ryukyu government, in the mid 17th century students were sent to Chinas Fujian Province to study geography where they were introduced to methods of Feng Shui. Since the 18th century until this day, people in Okinawa and other East Asian regions use Feng Shui as a highly important tool when building tombs, to determine their style and shape and direction, believing this would affect the fortune of the whole family and prosperity of descendants.
The most representative building on Okinawa, in which Feng Shui was used would be Shuri Castle. Surrounding the castle are hills, which represent the guardian deities of the four cardinal points, and the location of the castle was considered the perfect spot for good power to build up. Of course, not only the location, but also the structure of the buildings inside the castle were all determined according to Feng Shui.
Most old villages in Okinawa were also laid out according to rules of Feng Shui, the most desirable location for the village houses being between a mountain and the ocean. A feature special to Okinawa are fukugi trees that were planed around the houses and along roads to protect against typhoons and the annual rainy season.

Feng shui expert Marites Allen established Frigga in 2012, after studying at the London College of Fashion, a constituent college of the University of the Arts, London.
Named after the Norse deity regarded as the goddess of all the goddesses, Frigga incorporates feng shui concepts into wearable and stylish clothes and accessories.
The basic principle of feng shui is that you attract prosperity and auspiciousness in your life if your living and work environments are balanced and harmonious, Ms. Allen told reporters.
Feng shui uses shapes, colors, symbols, and elements in seeking that balance, so it lends itself naturally to fashion. You apply the same principles on clothing, which is the most intimate environment there is, close to our bodies, and essentially that is wearing and projecting our aspirations to acquire harmony in our lives, she added.
Working with her in putting together the Frigga brand is a team of Londons top fashion designers. Using her meticulously prepared feng shui forecast for each animal sign, the team makes its own creative interpretation by combining the forecast guidelines with the latest European fashion trends.
For this year, Frigga features the Pantone colors that dominate the 2014 fashion palette in the major European fashion houses.
Ms. Allen said the latest collection features fabulous fabrics, chic style, lucky prints, and unique design -- the qualities that set Frigga above other brands.

About 40 miles east of Los Angeles, houses in the new College Park subdivision are designed to have good feng shui.
If you leave Los Angeles, Calif., on Interstate 10 and head east for about 40 miles, you'll run into a quintessentially suburban phenomenon: the opening of a subdivision.
hide captionIn a house with good feng shui, the staircase leads away from the front door so the energy doesn't rush out before it can do good for the house.
At one such development called College Park in Chino, Calif., the lawns are bright green, the D.J. is spinning classic rock and a lot of the conversations are in Mandarin. Among those looking for a house is Eddie Yung. He lives in China now, but he's moving to California.
The number of Chinese buying homes in the U.S. has more than doubled since 2007, with most of those sales in Southern California. Some are buying for investment purposes prices are positively cheap compared to the market in Beijing or Shanghai and others are planning to start a life in the states.
Marketing to those Chinese buyers has meant learning about what customers want in a house's design, says Mark Torres, a division president for Lennar Homes, the company that's building the subdivision.
"We consider feng shui elements in all our designs," Torres says. "Everything from the water-fire elements and making sure that we don't have those types of conflicts [and] designing the entry of the homes to keep all that positive energy in the home."
Just a few miles from College Park is the town of Chino Hills, which Lisa Dutton calls home. But her house has feng shui problems. It's had issues since she bought it from a Chinese seller 15 years ago.
"As he was moving out, he told us the reason he was moving was the house didn't have good chi," Dutton says. "We had no idea what chi was! Had no idea whatsoever. So, we bought the house."
