Obama, looking to mend fences with Congress, is reaching out. To Democrats. - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

President Obama and his closest aides have determined that their best chance of success in the next two years will depend on improved relationships on Capitol Hill, but their behind-the-scenes efforts are more focused on Obamas own party rather than the Republicans who are about to take full charge of Congress in January.

Obamas attention on congressional Democrats, allies whom he once regarded as needing little attention, marks a shift in his view on how to deal with Congress. The president now sees his path to success as running through Hill Democrats, a group that has been disenchanted by the treatment it has received from the White House over the years.

The remedial work has included frequent calls to Democratic leaders since the midterm elections and comes as Republicans prepare to take control of both chambers for the first time since Obama took office. While the president and GOP leaders have pledged to seek common ground, Obamas use of executive action to alter immigration enforcement procedures and other steps have already angered Republicans, making significant legislative accomplishments more difficult.

And White House officials are looking to Hill Democrats as a defense against Republican efforts to undo key elements of Obamas legislative legacy, including the Affordable Care Act, his immigration action and climate policy.

The presidents ability to sustain the vetoes he is likely to issue will depend on whether he is able to mend relations with congressional Democrats many of whom blame the president for the partys large midterm losses and persuade Republican legislators to work with him in a way that has eluded the two parties for the past six years.

On Wednesday, the outreach effort began publicly as Obama hosted Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) who will lead the Senate starting in January in the Oval Office. It was the first time the two have met one on one for an extended period in more than four years. The most recent small gathering they had was with Vice President Biden, nearly 3 1/2 years ago.

McConnell spokesman Don Stewart called the session a good meeting but did not release additional details.

By contrast, House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) has been in near-constant communication with the White House since the midterm elections. He received back-to-back calls from Obama on Nov.24 and 25, the first to discuss the administrations handling of sanctions against Iran amid ongoing negotiations over that nations nuclear program, and the second to confer on the two mens shared opposition to a pending proposal extending a series of federal tax breaks.

In the past couple of months, Ive seen heightened outreach, Hoyer said in an interview Tuesday. To some degree, we become even more relevant than we were before. Now he needs to rely on both houses to sustain a veto.

Those are not the only calls Hoyer has received from the White House recently. Obamas chief of staff, Denis McDonough who paid a visit to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Tuesday called Hoyer on Nov.13 to discuss an effort by lawmakers to force federal approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline and on Nov.25 to talk about tax policy. The White House legislative-affairs staff also called him Nov.6 to discuss immigration policy, a day after Obama called him at home in the evening to discuss immigration and ongoing efforts to counter the Islamic State.

Green Flag can go well in the Betfred Becher Chase, says trainer Lucinda Russell - December 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lucinda Russell believes Green Flag should go well over the Crabbies Grand National fences in Saturdays record-breaking Betfred Becher Chase at Aintree.

As well as the biggest attendance for the Becher of 42,000 due to Aintrees free ticket giveaway there will be a record field of 25 set to line up in the extended 3m2f Grade Three feature.

Last years 22 runners was the previous biggest field for the Becher since its inception. But last years winner Chance Du Roy, top weight and Scottish Grand National winner Al Co head the bumper field, which includes Russells Green Flag.

The seven-year-old made an encouraging return to action at Carlisle last month, finishing fourth to subsequent Hennessy Gold Cup hero Many Clouds.

He will be having his first taste of the unique National fences at Aintree and is a best-priced 12-1 joint third favourite with most bookmakers behind 10-1 market leader Chance Du Roy.

Russell is hopeful he can go close to victory and said: Green Flag is really well. I was delighted with his comeback at Carlisle over a trip that was too short and obviously the winner has gone on.

The step up in trip will definitely suit him. He has always been a very good jumper and should take to the course as the fences are very horse friendly now. I think he is on a reasonable mark and he has every chance.

Philip Hobbs Chance Du Roy, who also finished sixth on his last start in the Crabbies Grand National, bids to match Hello Bud and land the Becher for a second time. Recent Troytown Handicap Chase winner Balbriggan, from Grand National-winning trainer Gordon Elliotts stable, is one of three Irish raiders and is vying for favouritism and is a best-priced 11-1 with BetVictor.

Fellow Irish raider, the Jim Dreaper-trained Goonyella, is 12-1 with several firms including William Hill, Coral and BetVictor.

2011 Irish Grand National winner Lion Na Bearnai 50-1 with Ladbrokes completes the Irish contingent.

Reining in dangerous drones with "geo-fences" - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sales of recreational drones are skyrocketing as photographers, farmers and firefighters realize the incredible views they can capture from high above. Drones carrying small cameras can go where humans can't.

The problem is, that type of consumer cinematography isn't always legal.

"Anybody who's flying above 400 ft is flying is in violation the law. Yes they can fly farther than you can see, but you shouldn't," 3D Robotics co-founder Chris Anderson said. "There's an FAA regulation about that. You can fly below 400 ft -- manned aircraft are above 400 ft, so there's supposed to be a buffer."

Consumer drones have soared to become a $450 million dollar industry, up 45% in the last year, but their future is a bit up in the air. In the last six months, there has been at least 25 close calls with drones reported by airplane pilots and the FAA may crack down on where, how and when drones can fly.

Anderson said their company is taking action to help prevent dangerous flying. While his company's drone could technically fly thousands of feet, a piece of technology is quelling user's dangerous temptations.

"It's called geo-fence, our software limits how high and how far you can go," Anderson said. "We have an obligation as an industry to basically use the intelligence to help people fly more safely."

That won't necessarily stop every concern though. For many, privacy might always be an issue. But Anderson said while drones have the capability, people shouldn't be flying where they can't see.

"You're not allowed to fly over urban areas. FAA rules say you can't fly over visual line of sight, you can't fly over built-up areas," Anderson said. "The point is we already have rules in place but they're not well understood and they're not being well enforced and I think we have an obligation as an industry to say, 'Hey you're in built-up space, you shouldn't be flying here.'"

But Anderson assured there's more to drones than danger. At a price point starting at around $500, people are sending more and more affordable drones into the sky, primarily with GoPro cameras.

"This is the golden age of personal videography. The quality of cameras in our iPhones and GoPros are extraordinary," Anderson said. "YouTube created a marketplace for great videos in your life. We now have the tools, the cameras and software, to take great videos. The only thing we're missing is the thing that Stephen Spielberg has, which is the boom or the crane, the perspective to take it above eye level."

Pineau De Re sticking to hurdles before National defence - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Pineau De Re will not run over fences again before he defends his crown in the Crabbies Grand National next April.

Dr Richard Newlands 11-year-old was a 25-1 winner of the worlds most famous steeplechase at Aintree last spring and his entire campaign is unsurprisingly being geared around a return to Merseyside.

The veteran finished tailed off on his seasonal reappearance over hurdles at Cheltenham last month, but Newland is confident his charge will bounce back in due course.

He is likely to turn out again at Carlisle on Sunday week and Newland is hoping he will be in action at the Cheltenham Festival in March for another crack at the Pertemps Final, having finished a close third in last seasons renewal.

We will know a bit more when he runs at Carlisle. In hindsight, he got very tired at Cheltenham and I was very glad that Daryl (Jacob) did not knock him about, said Newland yesterday.

We try and win every race we can. I was a bit surprised to be called before the stewards (after the Cheltenham race). They were doing their job and it was certainly not a question of the horse not trying we were trying.

He had 11st 12lb in very testing ground and in hindsight the run probably came a couple of weeks too soon. Hopefully, he will put up a better show next time.

Who will be on board Pineau De Re on April 11 remains up in the air.

Leighton Aspell was the man in the limelight last season, while Sam Twiston-Davies, Richard Johnson, Brian Hughes, Jason Maguire and Jacob have all ridden the horse since he joined Newland from Ireland last year.

Newland said: We have no idea who will be riding him in the Grand National Leighton came in as a spare last year and did a fantastic job.

Aditya Chopra and Kajol mend fences? - December 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Kajol

Mumbai: Kajol is ecstatic these days, thanks to her 90s blockbuster Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge celebrating its 1,000th week. According to sources, the actress has also patched up with Yash Raj Films honcho, Aditya Chopra.

Kajol, who was axed from the YRF family and its many big celebrations, has allegedly stepped in for the promotions of the grand celebrations of DDLJs long journey with leading man Shah Rukh Khan and rest of the cast.

When actresses across generations who worked with the late Yash Chopra walked the ramp, Kajols absence had made headlines. She was also not invited for the star-studded premiere of Yashjis last directorial film Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Also, Kajol had to bear the brunt of the tussle between her husband and good friend, says a source. But it does seem like Adi and Kajol have decided to forget the wars of the past.

She had suffered a hairline fracture recently for which she has been limping around. But that didnt stop her from shooting for a TV show with SRK and rest of the DDLJ cast.

And not so long ago, Kajol and Karan Johars renewed ties was the talk of the town. Looks like the star is clearly in a mood to start afresh by re-thinking her equations with close friends. Adding to the developments, those close to the DDLJ gang have revealed that it was SRK and Karan who were instrumental in playing peacemakers between her and Adi.

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls sending strong team to Aintree for Betfred Becher Chase day - December 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Paul Nicholls could be double-handed in both big races over the Crabbies Grand National fences on Betfred Becher Chase day at Aintree this Saturday.

The champion trainer, who has won the Becher three times, has both Just A Par and Mon Parrain among the 28 entries for Saturdays feature race which were headed by Scottish Grand National winner Al Co and last years Becher Chase hero Chance Du Roy.

Mon Parrain has shown his liking for the Grand National fences in the past finishing runner-up in the 2011 Topham Chase. But he was pulled up at Cheltenham on his most recent start and is a 25-1 chance with Ladbrokes, William Hill and Coral for Saturdays extended 3m2f contest.

The seven-year-old Just A Par won a Grade Two in his first season in novice company and was an encouraging fifth on his only start so far this campaign in the Listed Badger Ales Trophy at Wincanton last month.

Nicholls said: I have got two in each of the races over the Grand National fences this weekend. Both Mon Parrain and Just A Par have been aimed at the Betfred Becher Chase. Just A Par had a run at Wincanton the other day and he could do well in a race like this.

Mon Parrain was a little disappointing at Cheltenham last month but he often needs a run or two to get back to his best. He has jumped round the Grand National course well in the past and the big fences will hopefully spark him up again.

Last years Becher Chase winner Chance Du Roy, who was also sixth in the National itself in April, is currently the market leader with most firms in his bid to land a second victory for the in-form Philip Hobbs stable. The 10-year-old is a best-priced 10-1 with Coral and William Hill. While the Peter Bowen-trained Al Co, who warmed up for his first try over the National fences when last of 11 in a 2m4f handicap hurdle at Haydock last month, is a 20-1 chance.

The Jonjo ONeill-trained Burton Port, who unseated Brian Harding at the second fence in last seasons Grand National, could also run in the Becher having been fourth at Aintree over the Mildmay fences on his last start in the Betfred Mobile Veterans Handicap Chase in October.

ONeill said: We are running Burton Port again over the National fences because he exited too early for us to see whether he liked them or not in the Crabbies Grand National.

We want to try him again now over the course rather than wait until next years Crabbies Grand National. He is training well at home and is pleasing me. We will see how he gets on.
