Baseball is swinging for the financial fences - January 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

As Major League Baseball's Rob Manfred, now chief operating officer, succeeds retiring Commissioner Bud Selig on Sunday, MLB is heading into a new season in its best financial shape in years. In fact, some sports economists argue the sport is gaining ground financially on the National Football Leauge, the most lucrative and popular professional sport.

Revenue from MLB's 32 teams hit a record $9 billion in 2014, a 12.5 percent increase from 2013, thanks to increases in broadcast fees and gate receipts along with gains from the league's digital media business, Major League Baseball Advanced Media (BAM).

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks will open Major League Baseball's 2014 season in Sydney, Australia. CBS News' Lee Cowan reports ...

The service lets fans stream out-of-market games over their devices. Some experts consider BAM, which also has nonbaseball customers, to be among the most effective digital media business models and is MLB's fastest growing business. Indeed, MLB executives are optimistic about the league's growth prospects, although they declined to provide specifics.

"We believe we have the most valuable assets of any live sport, and we are looking to grow our top line significantly," MLB senior executive Bob Bowman recently told Sports Business Journal.

University of Michigan sports economist Rodney Fort argued that baseball will catch the NFL in the next two to three seasons because of BAM and the growth of regional sports networks. "They have been closing in on football for the past five or six years," Fort told CBS MoneyWatch. "Baseball is definitely going to catch football in the next few years."

Other sports economists aren't so sure. The NFL generates about $10 billion in revenue now and may hit $25 billion by 2027. And pro football's dominance of TV ratings isn't in danger from baseball or any other sport.

Answer Man: Expect fences at courthouse next month - January 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dear Answer Man, thank you for your efforts to track down the facts of life here in DMC-ville. Here is a bit of a challenge, if you care to accept it.

A large, out-of-town demolition company has been awarded a contract to demolish a building owned by the Mayo Foundation. The work is to be done at night within the next two or three months, and it must be completed entirely within a 30-day period.

Snow, new fences cause headaches at Longmont's Vance Brand Airport - January 22, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A City of Longmont snowplow is seen on Airport Road near the entrance to Vance Brand Municipal Airport Wednesday. (Matthew Jonas / Longmont Times-Call)

This winter's persistent snow storms and below freezing temperatures has presented a problem for companies leasing hangar space at the Vance Brand Municipal Airport.

Assistant City Manager Shawn Lewis, who is overseeing airport operations while a replacement is chosen for former airport manager Tim Barth, said that the storms prompted several complaints from companies that fly out of the airport about snow on the runways and taxiways.

Although the airport is next door to the city's public works operations building where the city deploys its snowplows, the double and single-bladed plows are generally not used inside the airport, Lewis said.

"The city equipment we have is dedicated to the streets and the airport is an enterprise fund," Lewis said. Enterprise funds must support themselves through earned revenue and other monies, and is not fully subsidized by city coffers.

"The other reasons is because, well obviously the public works equipment is fully deployed on city streets in the event of a storm because that's its primary function," Lewis said.

The solution is that some of the private companies stationed at the airport contract with separate snow removal companies. For the rest of the shared space some of the runways and taxiways in 2010 the city contracted with Mile-Hi Airport Services, a company that is also owned by the owners of Mile-Hi Skydiving.

Under that contract, the city pays Mile-Hi Airport Services $60 an hour to remove snow when it's preventing the airport from functioning. Mile-Hi Airport Services is also contracted at $60 an hour to mow some parts of the airport and public works facility lawn and sweep debris from the taxiways and runways. Since the contract was first signed in 2010, it has been renewed the maximum number of four times annually, and the service will be bid out to prospective snow removal companies at the end of April this year.

One problem was that snow storms in November and December resulted in constant snowfall that hardened and iced over before it could be plowed by both Mile-Hi and the other contracted companies, making it difficult to plow away. The other problem is an unintentional consequence of a new airport improvement.

In 2013, the airport received a $400,000 grant from the state that it matched with $44,000 to buy and install better perimeter fencing to improve security. Most of that new fencing went up just before Barth resigned Dec. 19

Eventers to make welcome return to Hickstead - January 22, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

ZOE ADAMS riding SATONAMILLION in The Amlin Plus Eventing Grand Prix

Eventers will be back at Hickstead this summer after the loss of the eventing grand prix in 2014.

The popular class in which eventers and showjumpers went head-to-head over a range of coloured poles and fixed cross-country fences was traditionally held on the Thursday of the Royal International Horse Show. But in 2014 it was withdrawn from the programme as Sky Sports dropped Thursdays coverage, meaning that action from the cross-country fences in the grounds would not have been filmed and relayed back to the arena screens.

However, to solve this problem the class has been reformatted into the eventers challenge.

The class will now be kept within the arena and only event riders will be eligible to compete, which will allow the cross-country fences to become more technical and demanding.

Lots of equestrian fans were upset by the loss of the former eventing grand prix class, so were very pleased to be launching the eventers challenge in its place, said Hicksteads Lizzie Bunn.

This year the course will be designed by Richard Taylor. Mr Taylor has been part of the course-building team at two European eventing championships, the Asian Games and the Beijing Olympics.

All the fences will be rustic cross-country obstacles, with some fixed fences and others that can be knocked down.

A number of top riders have won the title during the class sixteen-year history, including eventers Pippa Funnell, Andrew Nicholson and Lucinda Fredericks, plus showjumpers Michael Whitaker and Shane Breen.

There have been some very illustrious eventing champions competing at Hickstead over the years, and were pleased to be inviting the countrys top names once again, added Lizzie.

Saudi Arabia building hi-tech border fence - January 22, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Manama: Saudi Arabia border security forces both in the north and south of the kingdom are ready to deal with any situation, including shooting any infiltrators trying to cross into the country illegally, a security official has said.

They are well prepared in light of the events unfolding in some of Saudi Arabias neighbouring countries and they have the authority to reciprocate and shoot any illegal infiltrators, Mohammad Al Ghamdi, the spokesperson for the border security forces, said.

The plan to secure the southern borders is moving forward. The first stage of the fence is over and the second stage of including modern technology in monitoring and tracking infiltrators is being implemented, Al Ghamdi told Saudi daily Al Sharq Al Awsat.

The official added that the northern borders were secure and that the rate of infiltration into Saudi Arabia was nil, stressing that the modern technology used by the border patrols succeeded in tracking anyone trying to enter the kingdom illegally.

We deal with infiltrators in the 20-kilometre no-man zone, he said.

The tracking of infiltrators trying to enter the kingdom by using aeroplanes is coordinated with the interior ministry security aviation, he said.

On September 5, King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud inaugurated the first phase of a border security barrier along the kingdoms northern borders, stretching from Hafar Al Batin, near the Iraq-Kuwait border, to the northeast town of Turaif close to Jordan.

The Saudi Press Agency reported that the multilayered barrier runs along 900km of the northern border and consists of 50 radars, 78 monitoring towers, eight command centres, ten mobile surveillance vehicles, 38 night vision camera-equipped gates, 32 rapid-response centres, and three rapid intervention squads, all linked by a fibre-optic communications network.

The official news agency said that 3,397 people were being trained by 60 trainers to man the barrier.

The ten kilometre-deep barrier consists of a sand berm, two fences, and a patrol road that connects the various watchtowers and supporting facilities.
