Gemma Tattersall: how to make skinnies easy - January 30, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Not a big fan of narrow fences? This season you are unlikely to walk a cross-country track without at least one skinny to negotiate, and accuracy questions are becoming increasingly challenging.

British Europeans squad contender Gemma Tattersall regularly practises skinnies as part of her regular routine. She says that doing your homework makes these questions straightforward, and just because its the off-season doesnt mean you should stop training for them.

These days everything is jumped to a skinny or corner and horses have to be ready for anything, says Gemma, who introduces each of her horses to narrow fences early in their education.

If they see small skinnies from an early stage they become the norm.

The following exercise is easy to do at home:

Paddleboat escape from Antioch police proves unsuccessful - January 30, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

ANTIOCH -- A man who fled police by jumping backyard fences after allegedly violating a restraining order briefly pedaled a paddle boat into a lake before deciding to surrender, police said.

The unusual pursuit began shortly after 11 a.m., after the man showed up at a residence in the 600 block of Wilbur Avenue, where he was forbidden to be per a restraining order, Antioch police Sgt. Tom Fuhrmann said.

After police were called, the man used the fences to escape and grabbed a paddleboat from a dock at Lake Alhambra, Fuhrmann said.

He pedaled into the lake and stayed there for a short time before giving up. He pedaled back to the shore with his arms raised, and police arrested him after he got to shore.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

Fuhrmann said the man was expected to be charged with violating a restraining order. Other charges stemming from his use of the paddle boat also were possible, he said.

Britain's blind showjumper Karen Way reveals her love for Pearl - January 29, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Karen Way, 53, from Stockport, was registered blind 40 years ago She was always passionate about horses but was unable to afford one Former showjumper Emma-Jane Brown wasmoved by Karen's story She raised 9,000 to buy grey mare Pearl by skydiving out of a plane

By Kathryn Knight for the Daily Mail

    Published: 06:17 EST, 28 January 2015 | Updated: 08:08 EST, 28 January 2015

Soaring gracefully over the fences in the showjumping arena as her trainer shouts his instructions, Karen Way looks every bit the accomplished horsewoman.

Listen carefully however, and even a novice might sense that some of the commands seem surprisingly simple. Like walk straight and make the turn.

But then they need to be - because Karen, 53, from Stockport, cant see where she is going. Shes blind, and relies on both her instructor and her bond with her beautiful eight-year-old-grey mare, Pearl, to navigate her way around the course and its many fences, some of which are over a metre high.

    Scroll down for video

Karen Way is Britain's only blind showjumper who has an extraordinary bond with her horse Pearl

It requires extraordinary trust, not to mention courage qualities that 53-year-old Karen has in abundance, along with a humbling lack of self-pity.

Bumps, falls, she has had them all along with a nasty scar on her neck from one unceremonious unsaddling and a firm kick under the chin from one steed less gracious than her beloved Pearl.

Critics: $10 billion border bill unneeded - January 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

TUCSON A $1 billion-a-year bill moving through Congress would add miles of roads and fences along the border and waive more than a dozen environmental laws within 100 miles of the border even though top immigration officials say that's not needed.

The proposed bill requires the Department of Homeland Security to achieve operational control of the U.S.-Mexico border. That means that all illegal entries are stopped meaning all illegal entries are stopped, which top DHS officials have said is unrealistic.

But Martha McSally, Southern Arizona's newly elected Republican U.S. Representative who co-sponsored the House bill, said setting an ambitious standard is the best way to achieve success.

"We have to set a very high goal to understand how important it is to get this job done," McSally said. Arizona's U.S. senators, Republicans John McCain and Jeff Flake, co-sponsored the Senate version of the bill.

The House bills author, U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, calls it the toughest border security bill ever set before Congress, but neither the Border Patrol union nor local environmentalists think it's needed.

We dont address the underlying issues, said Roger McManus, a biologist who is president of Friends of the Sonoran Desert. People keep coming here for jobs, and drugs keep coming over the border because there's a demand for them, he said.

Groups on both sides of the immigration debate also have spoken out against the bill either because they say it doesnt do enough to stop illegal immigration or because it won't lead to comprehensive immigration reform.

Perhaps the strongest rebuke of all came Friday from Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, who issued a statement saying the bill "is extreme to the point of being unworkable; if enacted, it would actually leave the border less secure. The bill sets mandatory and highly prescriptive standards that the Border Patrol itself regards as impossible to achieve, undermines the Department of Homeland Securitys capacity to adapt to emerging threats, and politicizes tactical decisions."

Among other things, the Republican bill would:

    add 48 miles of new double-layer pedestrian fencing;
