No electric fences were detected during a raid conducted by a team of Tangedco officials in some parts of the Nilgiris North Forest Division on Tuesday. Superintending Engineer T. Haldorai told The Hindu that the raid was carried out following the death of an elephant at Dhoddamanehaada, near Sholur recently. Farms, and buildings in and around Kil Kotagiri, Garikiyur, Mudiyoor, Kokohada, and Banglapadi were inspected by a nine-member team. Mr. Haldorai said that such surprise raids would be conducted in various parts of the Nilgiris frequently.

They're used to keep out dingoes, wild dogs and feral cats. Now scientists say fences could stop cane toads invading large parts of arid Australia.
Toads died en masse after a team of Sydney researchers erected fences around several man-made dams in the Northern Territory, preventing the animals' access to lifesaving water.
The fences also stopped the pests re-establishing their population the following year, making the simple solution the first successful method of controlling cane toads long term.
"There were dead cane toads piled up around the fences," said the study leader, Mike Letnic, from UNSW. "We smashed them."
Since their ill-conceived introduction, cane toads have marched across northern Australia, decimating populations of several native species.
Scientists, conservations and governments have tried many ways to thwart the toxic pest; including trapping, biological controls, even using their own toxin against them, with only short-term success.

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - From graffiti to broken fences there were just over 90 acts of vandalism in Wrightsville Beach last year. Now, town leaders are putting their foot down not just on the vandal, but the property owners for taking too long to clean it up.
Graffiti has been sprayed along the front and side of the closed Wrightsville Food Mart for the past 5 months.
"We've been trying to get the property owner of the Scotchman store to clean up their property, explained Wrightsville Beach Town Manger, Tim Owens. This prompted a lot of it so we can take action and have the problem corrected."
After multiple attempts to the property owner to clean up the property, the town is now working on a new nuisance ordinance that will fine the owner for not cleaning up their property on time.
We talked to Tyler Gregg, the broker for the property, and he admits they've dropped the ball cleaning up it up.
"Since we have already done it twice, this third round we've let it slip, said Gregg. However, we have every intension of cleaning it up."
Johnny Mercers Pier is no stranger to vandalism. Just a few days ago, vandals decorated the underside of their pier.
"It's disconcerning to see this type disrespect to public property," said Matthew Johnson, whose family has owned the Pier since 1969.
However, Johnson thinks this new ordinance could help improve the beach.
I think it's good, he said. It probably wouldn't just apply to vandalism; it would apply to a house that is falling down in disrepair. It just makes the beach look nicer and Wrightsville Beach has a nice image and we just wanted to keep it that way."

Following an increase in the death of wild animals particularly elephants due to electrocution in various parts of The Nilgiris, authorities have decided to crackdown on illegal electrification of fences put up around farms near forests.
Inspections
Superintending Engineer, Nilgiris Electricity Distribution Circle (NEDC) T.Haldorai told The Hindu here on Sunday that surprise inspections would be carried out by the forest and NEDC officials.
The joint operation would be conducted periodically particularly in and around places such as Bokkapuram, Masinagudy and Chokkanhalli.
Stringent action would be taken against those misusing power connections.
Awareness
Awareness would be created about the consequences of misusing or stealing power among the villagers and their cooperation would be sought to nab those who illegally electrify fences.
Assistant Conservator of Forests, The Nilgiris North Division, J.Premkumar said that Ravichandran, the main accused in the recent case relating to the death of a tusker due to electrocution at Dhoddamanehaada near Sholur, would be arrested soon.
Pointing out that he was now admitted in a hospital at Coimbatore for treatment of some illness, Mr. Premkumar said that he would be taken into custody as soon as he was discharged.

Parents and Newport-Mesa residents are invited this week to a series of community meetings on safety initiatives, such new fences, at Andersen, Victoria and Adams elementary schools.
At the Andersen meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, district officials will lay out a final proposal and timeline to add a fence around the school perimeter, reconfigure the school's entrance and add plants and other aesthetic improvements. The meeting will be held in the multipurpose room at the school, 1900 Port Seabourne in Newport Beach.
Similar presentations are set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Victoria Elementary, 1025 Victoria St. in Costa Mesa, and 6 p.m. Thursday at Adams Elementary, 2850 Club House Road in Costa Mesa. The presentations will take place in each school's multipurpose room.
Last year, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District board voted for safety initiatives at the three schools. Since then, each school formed a fence design committee, and the recommendations of the panels were incorporated in the proposals being presented this week.
