Fences needed for organic grazing -

Farmers Creamery, the makers of Kalona SuperNatural organic dairy products, Marilyn Farms, and Kalona Amish and Mennonite dairy farmers have partnered to launch an online fundraising project through Kickstarter.com called Fencing Fields. Their goal is to increase the supply of certified organic, grass-fed milk by offering a custom grazing program to the local farmers. This will allow the farmers to increase the size of their herds by providing access to fenced, organic grazing pasture at Marilyn Farms.
The increased availability of organic milk will allow Farmers Creamery to produce more Kalona SuperNatural products!
Marilyn Farms has 600 acres of organic pasture available for local Kalona Amish and Mennonite dairy farmers to graze their cows. In order for these farmers to partner with Marilyn Farms and use the land, it must be fenced. The Kickstarter campaign will raise money to install fencing at Marilyn Farms creating custom grazing pasture for organic dairy cows.
Both mature, milk-producing cows and young heifers that cannot yet be milked are currently being grazed on local Amish and Mennonite farms. USDA organic regulations stipulate specific amounts of pasture, per animal, per year. By fencing the fields at Marilyn farms, local dairy farmers would be able to graze their non-producing heifers off-site during the growing season. This would leave more room for mature, milk-producing dairy cows on their farms, resulting in an increased supply of organic milk that will be used to produce more Kalona SuperNatural products.
The Fencing Fields Kickstarter campaign is important to the Kalona community because it allows the Amish and Mennonite dairymen to creatively increase their herd size while maintaining traditional farming practices. By custom grazing their immature cows, these farmers will be able to increase their certified organic milk supply, says Phil Forbes, president of Marilyn Farms. This will result in dairymen being able to sustain their small, family farms.

WACO (SMU/NCEA) -- Two SMU Mustangs were named to the National Collegiate Equestrian Association All-American Teams, the organization announced on Wednesday. Both honors came in equitation over fences as Sylvia de Toledo garnered second team recognition and Schaefer Raposa earned honorable mention accolades.
"I am really proud of Sylvia and Schaefer," head coach Carol Gwin said. "They are both very deserving of the honor. They both competed at a high level and it shows in the results. They are very team oriented and it was a pleasure coaching them this season."
de Toledo, a second team honoree last season, went 10-3-1 in equitation over fences this season. The sophomore earned Most Outstanding Performer in the New Mexico State and TCU meets. A New York City native has won five straight head-to-head matchups. She is the first Mustang with back-to-back second-team accolades.
Raposa was an honorable mention recipient last year. This season the junior carried a 10-4-0 record with three MOP's. Her score average is 81, which is a team best. The Clinton, N.Y., native has won six of her last seven head-to-head matchups.
The NCEA determined the 2015 All-America selections. The top four-riders per discipline were selected as first team while the next four were put as second team. There is no limit on the number of riders receiving honorable mention, as long as they met an established criteria.
The Mustangs face Kansas State in the opening round of the NCEA Championship on April 16. The three-day event is held at the Extraco Events Center in Waco, Texas. It is the ninth consecutive year that the City of Waco and McLennan County have hosted the championship.

Allowing arches and trellises on fences and establishing fines for code violations are on the agenda for theGretna City Council Wednesday (April 8). The council's agenda looks pretty light for the meeting that begins at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, Huey P. Long Avenue and Second Street.
The council will award a contract for demolition of the Dick White Center at Mel Ott Park. It also will award a contract to buy chemicals for the water treatment plant.
Here are three otherissues to watch.
Fence ordinance: The council will consider a maximum height of 8 feet for fences adorned with gateway arbors and trellises on residential property. Councilman Joe Marino III said the Historic District Commission received requests to add the design elements but the ordinance did not provide direction on the issue.
Hearing procedures: An amendment governing administrative hearings for health, housing, fire and historic district code violations establishes a fine of $100 to $250 for a first offense. Repeat offenders would face a maximum $500 penalty.
State funding: The council will authorize Mayor Belinda Constant to sign agreements with the state for capital outlay money to pay for two projects. They are for $640,000 for the Stumpf Boulevard force main project and $115,000 to Jefferson Parish water line connection work.

TAYLORSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Monday afternoon it was quiet and calm at Ray Jewell Memorial Park in Taylorsville where, just days earlier, flood waters caused major problems for the Little League. All four baseball fields seem deserted, covered in water and layers of mud.
I didn't know the current was going to take over and blow all the fences down," said Little League vice president Chris Redmon.
Three days ago the entire park was covered in water. It washed away dirt from under the bases, removed a pitcher's mound and even carried off a port-a-potty.
"I mean we lost a lot of stuff it just floated away," said Redmon.
Corn and tobacco stalks fill the field and dugouts. Dirt, leaves and debris stuck in fences still standing, and a shed for baseball gear was moved off its foundation by the rushing water.
"It was about a foot into the concession stand," Redmon said.
A lot of food and drinks that were inside the concession stand will end up in the trash, and the overall damage is estimated around $60,000.
The current was so strong that it brought down a fence onto the new batting cages they're building and moved a picnic table more than 50 yards. One bench, which was supposed to be in a dugout, ended up on the other side of the diamond.
Opening day is supposed to be April 18, but 250 little leaguers like Mason Wright, 10, and Jacob Redmon, 8, will now have to wait.
"I really wanna play right now," said 10-year-old Mason Wright. "I like to see kids play and I like having friends."

Rising young jockey Sean Bowen secured the winner over fences that he needed at Haydock to allow him to make his debut in the Crabbies Grand National at Aintree next week.
The 17-year-old completed a 20-1 double on the day aboard Paul Nicholls 5-2 favourite Virak when winning the 888sport.com Handicap Chase by six lengths at Haydock Park. The win means the 5lb claimer - son of Welsh trainer Peter Bowen, who will saddle 2014 Scottish National winner Al Co at Aintree next week - has the requisite number of wins over fences to line-up in the worlds greatest steeplechase.
Time had been running out for Bowen, who needed a 10th win over the big obstacles to qualify to ride in the Aintree marathon. With no chase rides on Sunday and no jumps racing on Tuesday and Wednesday, the youngster would only have had Easter Monday to get the winner he needed had he not prevailed at Haydock.
Thankfully for Bowen, the wait is over and he will now be on board Nicholls Mon Parrain, who is a best-priced 50-1 for the National.
Bowen, who is battling for the conditional jockeys title and moved on to 36 winners for the season with his latest successes, said: It is absolutely massive for me to be able to ride in the Grand National, especially aged just 17. Thats whats given me the most buzz, more than the wins today.
It will be great to ride in the National, that was a target, but the main target is to go for the conditional jockeys title, though Nick (De Boinville) will be hard to beat.

I have been waiting for that for a while and now I have got it Mon Parrain will be give me a lovely spin in the National.
I was very getting very frustrated and Monday was the last day I could do it. So this was really my main day I could do it. I am glad I have.
He added: Mon Parrain has form over the fences and jumped around their fine. I schooled him yesterday and he schooled absolutely brilliantly. He is in fine form and hopefully he can give me a good spin over the National fences.

Young jockey Sean Bowen has claimed an important treble at Haydock taking his tally over fences to 10 which qualifies him to ride in the Grand National.
The 17-year-old will ride the Paul Nicholls-trained Mon Farrain in the world's most famous steeplechase next Sunday after his Haydock victory on Virak for the stable.
Bowen admitted he had been frustrated in his attempt to reach the standard but was now turning his attention to the National.
"I've been waiting for that for a while, but I'm glad I've got it and hopefully Mon Parrain will be a good spin in the National," Bowen said.
"I was very frustrated. Monday was the last day I could do it as Tuesday and Wednesday there are no jump meetings.
"Thanks to Paul for giving me the chances to ride these horses and it's great to get my 10 winners over fences.
"It will be great to ride in the National."
Nicholls will have four or five horses in the race.
