Reid faces task of mending fences with Republicans after campaign attacks - November 26, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) infuriated Republicans during the campaign with his harsh partisan attacks and now faces the delicate task of mending his relationship with the GOP.

"I do think he lost more credibility with Republicans because of his aggressive comments during the campaign, said Ron Bonjean, a Republican strategist and former leadership aide who served in the Senate and House.

The make-up of the Senate is almost the same and I think Sen. Reid is likely to produce the same type of gridlock he did before because of his unusually partisan stance," Bonjean added.

Reid said Romney, a fellow Mormon, sullied their shared faith after the GOP nominee told a group of donors that 47 percent of Americans suffered from a sense of victimhood and mooched off the government. Reid declared in the closing days of the campaign that Senate Democrats would not work with Romney to pass his severely conservative agenda.

But sources who know the Democratic leader, a former amateur boxer, say its a classic case of Reid being Reid. He punches hard during the campaign but is willing to pivot to constructive bipartisan relationships after Election Day, just as fighter is willing to embrace his opponent after the final bell.

Sen. Reid knows as well as anyone theres a time for politics and a time for governing, said Rodell Mollineau, a former senior aide to Reid. The time for politics has passed. First and foremost, Sen. Reid cares about governing. So now that the election is over, he would want to find a consensus to move things forward.

More from The Hill: With second term assured, Obama aides eye jobs as lobbyists Washington has dj vu, not just vertigo, at edge of 'fiscal cliff' Taliban 'reintegration' in eastern Afghanistan faces steep challenges, US officials say

Reid immediately extended a peace offering to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) after Democrats picked up Senate seats.

I look at the challenges that we have ahead of us and I reach out to my Republican colleagues in the Senate and the House. Lets come together. We know what the issues are, lets solve them, he told a boisterous audience and stand of television cameras packing the ballroom of the Liaison Capitol Hill Hotel on Election Night.

The following day, Reid reiterated his offer and made an overture to his home-state colleague, Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.), another target of his campaign barbs. During Hellers race against Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.), Reid accused his colleague of a failure in leadership for not rounding up GOP votes for an online poker bill.

Obama, CEOs mend fences over fiscal cliff - November 26, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Boeing's Jim McNerney was among 5 CEOs Obama called over the weekend about the fiscal cliff, which could give the White House and Big Biz an excuse to mend fences.

WASHINGTON (CNNMoney) -- Fiscal cliff negotiations are proving to be the perfect excuse for President Obama and the business community to smooth over a rocky four years.

The White House has struggled to make and keep friends in the business community, thanks to contentious policy fights over financial and health care reforms. Obama famously dubbed Wall Street as "fat cat bankers" and bashed health insurers for raising premiums and denying coverage.

The tension grew worse during the election when business groups doubled down their contributions to defeat Obama. The financial sector spent more $50 million supporting the President's opponent Mitt Romney, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Thanks to a new crisis at hand -- the fiscal cliff -- there are some signs that the ice may be breaking. It helps that the White House and leaders of big businesses are united in their desire to avoid the fiscal cliff -- the Jan. 1 expiration of the Bush tax cuts and the Jan. 2 across-the-board spending cuts -- which economists fear will lead to an economic maelstrom.

Last week, the president reached out to several CEOs to shore up support for his position in averting the cliff, which includes tax hikes for the nation's wealthy. He invited 12 CEOs of large U.S. companies like General Electric (GE, Fortune 500), Xerox (XRX, Fortune 500) and Honeywell International (HON, Fortune 500) for talks at the White House last week. Over the weekend he called another five CEOs including Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase (JPM, Fortune 500), according to CNN.

These talks could set the stage for a more congenial relationship in the next four years. Several business lobbying groups say they have not had a warm reception from the West Wing in the last four years.

Rob Nichols, president of the Financial Services Forum, a lobbying group for financial CEOs, said the fiscal cliff presents an "opportunity" for the business community and the White House to work together in a way that moves past the tension of the last four years.

The fiscal cliff has given CEOs plenty of opportunities lately to talk with top officials in the administration and Congress, said Matthew Miller, vice president at the Business Roundtable, which represents CEOs of big business.

OAG, OPA mend fences - November 26, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Monday, November 26, 2012

Years of strained relationship between the Office of the Attorney General and the Office of the Public Auditor may have finally come to an end not only with the revival of the Attorney General's Investigative Unit but also as a result of renewed cooperation between the two offices initiated by the new attorney general, Joey Patrick San Nicolas.

Former AG Ed Buckingham, now a fugitive from justice, scrapped the AGIU, a joint effort between OAG and OPA.

On his first week in office, San Nicolas led OAG officials in a meeting Friday afternoon with Public Auditor Michael Pai and OPA legal counsels, including George Hasselback.

San Nicolas said he brought with him to the meeting other officers of the OAG. They included newly appointed deputy attorney general Viola Alepuyo, Civil Division chief Gil Birnbrich, Criminal Division chief Peter Prestley, AGIU chief Ed Cabrera, and victim advocate chief Dixie Inos.

Just letting them know that this is the leadership of the Attorney General's Office. and we're ready to work together on matters that affect both of our offices.. The Attorney General's Office is the highest law enforcement agency but we work closely with them as far as criminal [case] referrals and also referrals for collections, civil [cases are concerned], San Nicolas said in an interview at the lighting of a giant Christmas tree and Nativity in Susupe Friday night.

He said he and Alepuyo have been talking about the restoration of the AGIU for about a month now, and that he's glad to know that when he came in on Monday, AGIU was reinstituted.

San Nicolas left Saipan yesterday for a four-day meeting of the National Association of Attorneys General in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

    Public trust

Sen. Frank Cruz (R-Tinian), chairman of the Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigations, was relieved to know that the OAG and OPA are working together again.
