Numerous cars damaged at Denver International Airport car park Rabbits chewed on the cars' insulator portion of the ignition cables US Airport Parking now bringing in new measures to combat the problem

Extreme security measures have been introduced at an airport after thousands of dollars worth of damage was caused to cars by rabbits.

Wildlife experts are now building perches around the car park at Denver International Airport for hawks and eagles to rest so they can easily spot and prey on the rabbits.

New fences are also being constructed to make it harder for bunnies to burrow under while local car mechanics are spraying wires with coyote or fox urine which repels rabbits.

North Charleston considers limiting height of fences and shrubbery - February 19, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Quick links to other pages on this site | Still can't find it? see Site Index North Charleston has proposed new rules for fences that would impact Jack Hamrick's privacy. The new rules propose no fences taller than four feet in front yards or on corner lots, and no more making fences out of scrap material and baling wire. Non-compliant fences would have to be torn down within 5 years. (Grace Beahm/postandcourier.com) Buy this photo

John Hamrick III has a tall wooden fence that keeps neighborhood kids out of his pool in Old North Charleston and provides him some privacy. But under proposed city regulations, Hamrick could be required to tear it down.

The new rules have been going through study and revisions for months, and are aimed at requiring city residents to have attractive fences and shrubbery that arent too tall. Existing fences that dont meet the requirements would have to be taken down within five years.

Well, I wouldnt like that, said Hamrick. I should have the right to swim in my pool without people looking at me.

The latest version of the rules would limit fences or shrubbery to a height of 4 feet in front yards, and on a corner lot like Hamricks, both street-facing sides would be considered a front yard. Closer to an intersection, the height limit would drop to 30 inches.

Over the years, there have been a number of concerns about the appearance of some fences that have been installed in neighborhoods, said city spokesman Ryan Johnson. This is an attempt to address the concerns and create the definition of a fence.

He said the proposed ordinance would stop your neighbor from building a fence next to you out of plywood and razor wire.

The rules would also apply to businesses located on residentially zoned property.

New fences would have to be permitted and approved by the city. Properties zoned commercial or industrial could still have fences up to 10 feet tall, and could use barbed or razor wire.

At the most-recent meeting of the citys Planning Commission meeting, last week, Chairwoman Suzanne Thigpen and a few other commissioners suggested that no fences or bushes should be allowed at all in sight visibility triangle areas where they could prevent drivers from seeing traffic on cross streets.

Mesa schools work to beef up security with new fences, other measures - February 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Safety at Mesa schools could be improved by adding fencing, replacing chainlink fences with wrought iron fences and relocating offices to the exteriors of campus, the districts security director told the governing board Tuesday night.

After Decembers school shooting in Newtown, Conn., the Mesa Unified School District moved up plans to do a site-by-site analysis of all the districts campuses. Al Moore, Mesas director of security, led the effort and gave the first presentation.

While noting that proper fencing will improve security, Moore also told board members that terrorist acts like what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School would be difficult to defend against.

Someone who is intent to carry out an act that like will do it, he said.

But the district can take steps to stop opportunists who may try to harm a child in an area that either doesnt have fencing or has inadequate fencing.

I think overall what we need to do is focus first on our elementary schools. Our junior highs and high schools have SROs (school resource officers) assigned to them, he said. There are also 10 district security personnel who patrol the 51 neighborhood elementary schools, as well as the specialty campuses like the East Mesa Early Childhood Education Center.

There are seven elementary campuses where visitors have to walk onto campus to check in at the office, he said. You already passed kids and classrooms to get to the office, he told the board.

Working with staff, Moore said there have been low-cost ways identified to move the main entrance for those schools closer to the exterior.

Fencing also could be improved at the junior high and senior high schools, Moores report states.

All improvements will require funding. School Superintendent Mike Cowan said the board can access funds approved by voters in November as part of a $230 million bond package.
