Security Hospital gets NEW FENCES - July 5, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

July 4, 2013 Security Hospital gets NEW FENCES Change to make environment more therapeutic for mentally ill, will not affect sex offenders

By Dan Linehan dlinehan@mankatofreepress.com The Mankato Free Press The Mankato Free Press Thu Jul 04, 2013, 09:01 AM CDT

The razor-wire fences around the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peters Regional Treatment Center are being replaced with no-climb fences to create a more soothing environment for patients.

The no-climb fence offers the same protection and is certainly more conducive to a therapeutic environment, said Anne Barry, a deputy commissioner with the state Department of Human Services.

The change only affects the mentally ill and dangerous residents, not the sex offenders.

There are two distinct groups of residents in the Regional Treatment Center. The Minnesota Security Hospital houses the mentally ill and dangerous, while the Minnesota Sex Offender Program holds those civilly committed for sex crimes.

The fencing at the Security Hospital had been replaced in one yard, and work hasnt yet started on the second yard.

Barry said the new fences are almost impossible to climb but arent as dangerous or threatening. The fencing is chain link up to 12 feet, with 4 feet of no-climb mesh on top.

She said there hasnt been a report of a patient trying to scale the razor-wire fence since the early 90s.

This is a preventive measure, she said.

Director/producer fills out the role of Troy in "Fences" - July 5, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Ron Himes watched Fences on Broadway, produced it in St. Louis and directed it in Knoxville, Tenn. After nearly four decades in theater, however, he never expected to play the lead in August Wilsons Pulitzer Prize-winning play anywhere.

When Elliot Wasserman, director for New Harmony Theatres production, asked him to play Troy, the embittered ex-ballplayer at the center of Wilsons story, I was very surprised, said Himes.

The role qualifies as monumental on several levels, Himes explained.

JASON CLARK / COURIER & PRESS Ron Himes, left, plays the role of Troy and Marcus Callender plays Cory as USIs New Harmony Theatre gets ready to open Fences, August Wilsons Pulitzer Prize-winning drama about stolen and forfeited dreams in an African American household in the 1950s. Fences, directed by Elliot Wasserman, runs July 5-7 and July 12-14.

Physically, Troy is a large man of substantial girth and strength. Once a standout baseball slugger, he carries the weight of bitter years spent emptying brimming barrels into garbage trucks in the job he settled for after the racial barrier shut out his major league dreams.

Hes also an angry, blustery orator whose command of the language ability to tell a story make him one of the most eloquent characters on the American stage, Himes said during a recent break from rehearsals.

And then theres the Jones factor. When Himes saw James Earl Jones play the part on Broadway, the barrel-chested actor with the rumbling baritone was bigger than life, said Himes. He put his stamp on the role.
